It is fascinating to see how this thread has degenerated since we went to the possibility of Direct in February.

Dying - Dead are different things, never said it was dead just its very clear the focus is being shifted and being phased out as they did with the 3D in the 3DS.

But it isn't dying. The Switch Lite existing doesn't suddenly mean games designed around the Joy-Con will just disapear. May I remind you that the main Switch model regularly outsells the Lite, and that one of Nintendo's most recent releases is an excersice game that doesn't support handheld mode. This isn't like 3D, which was mandated to be optional from the onset, developers are always going to design Switch game aroud the Joy-Con.

Nintendo better give us an Animal Crossing Direct this week.

When I was still expecting a january direct, the marketing plan didn't seem THAT weird to me, it just suffered from a delay, I kinda understood why the marketing plan felt weird, it suffered from weird pace because of the delay. Even the september direct stuff, really for like 90% of the viewers it was new stuff since : barely anyone watch Threehouse, since it's not even translated for the non-english speakers. Or at the very least it was a cool trailer even if you watched threehouse (I still like to watch it from time to time, it's a long trailer that really puts you in the Animal Crossing mood).

But the game is releasing in two months. It's time to open the preorders in Japan, to let us preload the game, to finally show us Isabelle in game, to show us what KK and co are up to, how the town evolve, what are the other ways to custom the town other than just putting stuff outside, etc etc.
It's time to show us all the good stuff.

I don't think that a january direct is happening, so if there's no direct until february, it's time to give us the Animal Crossing Direct. They started to promote the game heavily on january 1, and then what, they just stop all of a sudden until february ? Give us what we deserve Nintendo !

I think the Pokemon and Smash directs have done a good job of obscuring the fact we still don't know anything about 2020.

I'm desperate for something new. If you don't like Animal Crossing, what do you have to look forward to that actually has a release date?

Fit Ring supports handheld mode and the Lite itself, it just isn't very comfortable.

At the very least, I think the announcement of the second Smash Bros. fighter's pass gave us a very important clue to Nintendo's timetable for Switch 2.

Consider that for Smash Bros. on Wii U/3DS that the final characters released in February 2016, and that Sakurai had made plans for Ultimate 2 months prior in December 2015.

For the sake of speculation, let's assume the same happens here. Final fighters pack releases in December 2021 which is the projected date we were given, and Sakurai does a project plan for a Smash sequel in October 2021. That would roughly place the next Smash in Holiday 2024 assuming a typical development cycle for the series. The Switch obviously wouldn't get a second Smash Bros., and we might as well rule out Sakurai working on anything other than Smash from now on.

Now as for why do I think there wouldn't be a 3rd fighters pass? It comes down to the matter that by the time the last DLC character releases it will have marked the 3rd year anniversary of Ultimate, meaning 3 years of DLC support. That's unheard of for Nintendo as a publisher and is itself a new record. I also think it's much more financially sensible to sell DLC passes immediately after launch, and then again 1 year after launch, than it is 3 years after launch. Smash has a big following, but even for it there will be a noticeable drop off in pass sales by then like with any other fighting game as casual players move on.

Overall, my feeling is that holiday 2024 would be the absolute latest a next gen console would launch, although given how Smash has always been a year or two late to the new Nintendo console (outside of Melee) I think sometime in 2023 is far more likely.

It was the same last year, and the Direct on February showed a lot of games. It's doom and gloom for the sake of it.

Silksong seems to be confirmed for 2020. It is on today's Switch news among games to be released this year. I can't wait!

With nearly every big game this year having some sort of delay, and Hollow Knight infamously taking years to come to fruition, I'll believe it when I hit "download" on the eShop :)

Again, there are far more posts about dooming and glooming than people actually dooming and glooming.
That's true - by now. Around 20 pages ago the mood was quite depressing, but now it's mostly calm discussions about possible games and such.
Gotta say, the hype deflating has its good sides as well.

I am currently working on my backlog and decided to finish Captain Toad on Switch.

That game never stops right ? The amount of content is surprisingly huge.

Always surprises me to see the sales for Nintendo software on N64. There's a lot of stuff released during that time that is ripe for a revival since the people that grew up with the system have tons of disposable income nowadays.

Both Wave Race and 1080 passed 2m mark on N64, they definitely deserve revivals. Especially today where the genre is killed despite the demand was there all the time. A brand new Wave Race game could sell 5m+ with right marketing.

Also someone really needs to get the 007 licence. Nintendo once again is making licensed games starting with Marvel, maybe this is just a hint of things to come.

The N64/PSX era is the one that could most benefit from a remake. Paper Mario 64 remake is my most wanted one. Just make it look pretty and make the combat as rich as TTYD and you've got GotF right there.

Also everyone in this thread is out of their mind if they think we aren't getting a Direct this week. Get off the internet, look in the mirror, and think about what led you down that dark path.

Again, I said flawed. I didn't say bad. And I'm very much open to the idea that these games may have been improvements over some past iterations (I'm not sure about Yoshi and Kirby though).
But the flaws of Mario tennis, party or link's Awakening are obvious in comparison to games like Mario Odyssey or Luigi's Mansion where what people call flaws often boils down to personal preferences. And that was exactly what my original message was pointing at.
Again, I wasn't referring to you, but the other poster who called those games "very average" efforts by their teams when in truth both games were better received than the last few entries in their respective franchises (which is also reflected in sales). They weren't average efforts but a clear step up for either team's past work.

Is there? Most of that stuff is either still around, rather redundant by now (Stadium), a licensing mess (GoldenEye) or franchises owned by Rare. What's left are games like F-Zero, Wave Race or 1080 which I would love to see back, but that likely wouldn't actually be an easy sell these days.

A new Pokemon Snap though. Come on, it's overdue.

There are so many IPs Nintendo could bring back, both on the N64 and later on that were beloved and have been forgotten -

Wave Race, Pokemon Snap, Diddy Kong Racing, Mario Golf, Advance Wars, Golden Sun...

So much potential.

I've been saying for a little while that I think Wave Race is in line for a reboot - Shinya Takahashi said in early 2018 it might something that EPD do on Switch. I feel like it's something the Mario Kart/Arms group could do. It'd provide something meaningfully different to Kart in the racing genre, tick the boxes for online and local multiplayer, and be a good summer release. Make it stylish like Arms and Splatoon and it could be a decent hit.

Sad to see F Zero X all the way at the bottom of that list. It was only the second game in the franchise and it launched in 1998, so it's not like it didn't have time to sell. Understandable why Nintendo have been hesitant with F Zero, especially after their efforts on GBA and GameCube didn't do any better.

If there is a sequel to Pokemon Schnapps, which flavors would you like to see explored? Frankly, there are so many more flavors now since the original Pokémon Schnapps that I highly doubt Game Freak can include them all.

Have there been any rumours about Wind Waker HD or Twilight Princess HD getting ports? I did see that more ports were meant to be coming but couldn't find any specifics.

Not them specifically, no. The current rumored ports are Pikmin 3 and Super Mario 3D World.

I wouldn't worry about them not coming over, though. Those two are the last "inevitable" Wii U ports, IMO.

There was one rumor on Twitter from an insider (I forgot which one, but hopefully someone else can specify) that included a 2D Metroid and Paper Mario that said that Nintendo has a WWHD port ready but is figuring out when best to release it.

Nice. Hopefully this year, still excited for 3D world and Pikmin. Not much left after those two and the Zelda games.

I think Donkey Kong 64, Diddy Kong Racing and Pokémon Snap are the most obvious ones. Wave Race, F-Zero, Pilotwings are in that group that would really need a standout revival to make waves (pun unintended).

GoldenEye 007 is a unique case, I guess. There hasn't been a marquee Multiplayer FPS on a Nintendo console since then so I don't think it necessarily need the IP to. Unless...

I mean from the N64 catalog that isn't owned by Rare, it's kind of slim pickings. Diddy Kong Racing just wouldn't be the same today with all the characters other than Diddy (and I guess Krunch) being owned by Rare among other elements of the IP possibly being owned by them such as music. It's such a legal grey area that it would take Microsoft's cooperation to even do something with it, since not even Smash Bros. has touched that game throughout its entire history.

The only two obvious standouts are Donkey Kong 64 and Pokemon Snap given their fan demand and market potential, and it is pretty shocking that neither of them ever got sequels over 20 years later. I think Pokemon Snap would be a much harder sell today as a $60 game though, since it is pretty short and also an "on-rails" game the likes of which have suffered a lot.

For DK, Nintendo only has 1 developer that specializes in 3D platformers and they are full time assigned to the Mario series. That or Retro suddenly develops an interest in trying to make one.

they can always find someone to develop a 3D DK game under their supervision. Playful Games seems like a choice to invest in, if not someone else

Nintendo might not want to touch 3D DK. I would prefer a western studio to do it anyways (I wouldn't mind the 3D Mario team doing it).

The options for companies who could possibly do it with Nintendo's supervision.

-Playful Studios
-Playtonic (might be too small)
-Retro (obviously their own studio)
-Gears for Breakfast (might be too small)
-Sumo Digital

Well if BotW is coming out this year, they probably won't let it be the last Zelda game on the Switch. They're an easy way to fill out release schedules, and there's a lot to cycle through. Here's hoping Nintendo breaks trends and actually has a collection. It's unlikely we'd get OoT3D. MM3D, TP and WW all together, but crazier things have happened. It'd be an incredible package.
