Yeah, the white outlines in Color Splash is one of the only things that bugs me about its visual style.
That being said I would prefer they go back to the old artstyle as I think it's just all around more pleasing to look at. Going back to the old artstyle would also make it look more visually distinct from the recent Yoshi game.

I'll usually defend Color Splash because I did think the game was at least clever and I enjoyed it, but something that bothers me is people saying they really liked the art style and presentation and hopes that it carries into future games. But that's something I really, really don't want.

Don't get me wrong, Color Splash has a great look and aesthetic for the type of game it is, which is largely based on self aware humor. But in the older games, the world wasn't supposed to be made of crafting materials, it was just an art style meant to emulate illustrations in a storybook, and that's what the series needs to go back to. Sure, the older games would poke fun at the character flatness like with the curse abilities in TTYD or flipping mechanic in SPM, but the world itself was always treated as genuine. The world can have a cartoony art style without having to justify it to the player, like Link's Awakening.

So while I do admire what Color Splash did with creating level dioramas, I really want them to go back to the storybook illustration style. No clouds held up by string, no cardboard sheeting grass, just a world that stands on its own.

Nah. You had stuff like Flurrie blowing away layers of paper and characters literally breaking through pages. It's honestly no different from Mario finding a literal pile of Toads in a closet.

Heck, the original Paper Mario had Bowser taping in Kammy in the book during the intro.

They like their crafted world. More potential for creativity.

I still have a haunch that the next Paper Mario game will keep the papercraft-y aesthetic though.

Well yeah. They already have the assets, so better just reuse them.

And I'm fine with the occasional nod like that, but the world itself is more interesting to me when it feels internally consistent. Flurries stuff and the page breaks feel like an abstract effect, but things like giant 3D electric fans just kind of cheapen the scale of the world.

Although I voted for January, I'm starting to lose faith and may begin in believing in team February.

I voted for February in the very first poll before the Pokemon Direct was announced. So I have stuck by it.

A Pokémon presentation followed shortly by a Smash presentation followed shortly by an Animal Crossing presentation — that would be cool.

A Fire Emblem direct featuring a new Genealogy Echoes remake and FEW2 focused on Three Houses' war period, with additions of Sigurd, Arvis, Hector, Ike, Micaiah, etc. (plus FEW1's cast).

People would rage about Fire Emblem but I would cry tears of joy.

...!

I would join you in crying tears of joy. And then when inevitably someone says "delicious salt" rather than warning/banning them I will simply say, "I agree."

Holy shit, I didn't know I wanted that to happen, but now I want that to happen.

I'm wondering what they'll do with a new 2D Metroid to differentiate it from the hundreds of other Metroidvanias on the eShop which cost like $10 or less. I don't think $60 for something like Samus Returns in HD would cut it for most people.

Beyond stoked that the last several pages of this thread have just turned into a huge Paper Mario appreciation/speculation topic :')

Bioshock rated in Korea. Multiple magazines prepping an info dump for AC:NH, two of which are releasing in January.

You're still #teamfebruary?

Oh... Ehhhh that's a bit of a stretch. Also the Zelda name can justify a $60 price tag a lot better than the Metroid name can.
A bit but when you think about it the structure is a bit the same. You have an unique map divided by zones and to access some of these zones you need to find special items (that acts as powerups like in many Metroidvania).

Obviously the Zelda name gives a big boost but a 2D Metroid should sell 1m+ which would be what Nintendo expects.
