March: Animal Crossing
May: Xenoblade DE
July: Super Mario 3D World
August: Pikmin 3+
September: Bayonetta 3
October: BOTW2
November: maaaaybe Sinnoh remakes? we'll see tomorrow lol

This is a pretty weak 1st party lineup, even with Bayo3/BOTW2 for the fall and the Animal Crossing Juggernaut in March.
But pad it out with 3rd party games (hopefully a few exclusives in the vein of Astral Chain/M+R).
Add the regular dose of exclusive/timed-exclusive indie games that Switch always gets.
Throw in a handful of new and exciting Smash Bros fighters and some DLC for Mario Maker...

....and I think I'm a happy camper. I can't pretend TLOU2, Cyberpunk 2077, and FF7R won't be eating up the first half of my year anyways.

If they're ports, sure. There was a quick turnaround from announcing DKCRTF and NSMBUD, among others

A (really unlikely, willfully pessimistic) year could look a little like this:

March: Animal Crossing
May: Xenoblade DE
July: Super Mario 3D World
August: Pikmin 3+
September: Bayonetta 3
October: BOTW2
November: maaaaybe Sinnoh remakes? we'll see tomorrow lol

edit: y'know this isn't actually that crazy besides the absence of any Mario content H1

In terms of heavy hitters I don't think that'd be bad at all (AC + Bayo + Zelda). Definitely needs some smaller titles such as a Mario Golf or a weird Kirby game or Hey! Pikmin 2.

I don't know if I would buy a 3D World port. I mean, my Wii U is still hooked up.. but I totally get how it would be awesome for all the people who didn't get a Wii U.

mario titles tends to eat sales each others and there's actually no hype for another port outside of some user here. just look at maker 2 and nsmbudx.
Maker 2 has likely already outsold the first game in half a year and NSMBU Deluxe is almost definitely going to outsell NSMBU before long

seems like Mario's doing fine

Y'know, I was thinking about what developers have realistically had enough time to do and this might be what we're looking at in a darkest timeline "no Direct until E3" situation:

January: TMS #FE
February: (Pokémon spinoff, eshop type game)
March: Animal Crossing
April:
May: Xenoblade Chronicles DE (dated on Twitter)
June: *E3 happens*
July: Super Mario 3D World
August: Pikmin 3+
September:
October: (Paper Mario from IS)
November: Pokémon remakes
December: Bayonetta 3

BOTW2 2021

a 3d world port will not do LM3 numbers.

First off, LM3 will sell more than 8 million when it's all said and done. It'll probably reach 10 million.

Second off, Mario always sells. This whole Mario Maker and NSMBUD failing talk is getting old. They're selling pretty damn well.

Third, this is a 3D multiplayer Mario game. That would sell no matter what.

yea, right, but they can't do fine forever. oversaturation is a thing and I hope we don't see a new one til september at the very least.

that's my opinion though.

HAL said after Star Allies that they're taking a step forward for the series, so I think it'll be a little longer before we see Kirby. As for the game itself... 3D, finally?

I don't know if my brain can comprehend any take that considers a Paper Mario game and a hypothetical Mario Odyssey 2 as in competition for sales, though.
on a shelf, they're both mario games, they both say mario. parents might pick one or the other.

obviously to Gamers™ there's no competition

for the most part this list looks more realistic than mine, but no mario at all in 2020?

HAL never have done a full 3D game before, I'm skeptical on that idea. If the next Kirby game is from them i think it's gonna be a traditional Kirby beat em up game.

My wish is Kirby Musou. Best way to transfer Kirby in a 3D space. Keep the core beat em mechanics but beat the crap out of Waddle Dees in a Dreamland field. All power ups should be there, expecially my all time favorite: Yoyo.

So much pessimism with these lists.

I'm not sure why we're expecting fewer first party games this year than we got last year.

Ah, but Musou games have never deviated from a very specific art style without bulky cartoon characters. Unless you mean a different developer than KT?

casual parents. back in the days my little brother and my mother went to buy a mario game for him and returned with a mario party ds copy,

also, you think that a new switch owner's gonna buy every mario game on the system? he has to choose between odyssey, maker 2, bros deluxe, 3d world, party, rabbits ecc. I'm sure your brain can comprehend. :P

Well, there's a first time of everything. They did, in fact, made Musou games in very different art styles and mechanics. Pirate Warriors for instance features some platforming mechanics, DQ Heroes is more like open world style action RPG. Omega Force is a very talented studio, I'm sure they can create a Kirby game in 3D world better than anyone else.

So much pessimism with these lists.

I'm not sure why we're expecting fewer first party games this year than we got last year.

Every major Nintendo IP already got a game on the Switch, with the exception of Metroid which people are not confident will be finished this year. So, I think it's likely that Nintendo has some new IPs for this year (like Daemon X Machina and Astral Chain), but it's hard and not fun to predict those.
