You mean the Mario that sold on a console that bombed and was always going to sell below any other Mario game yet still managed to pull an insane attachment rate for a 3D Mario? It got then beaten by Odyssey that managed to pull an even more insane attachment rate.

They could have released Odyssey 2 this year and it would have sold way ahead of expectations.
You're talking about 3D World in the context of how it was an answer to next-gen, but by no stretch of imagination was it a success. We were only a year into the Wii U so we didn't know that it was going to bomb LTD. Everybody thought that this Mario would be the thing that saved the Wii U and it not only didn't but got outsold by one of the worst 3D platformers ever made.

Attach rates are only worth talking about if both things are successful. In this case, neither one was. It's the worst-selling 3D Mario on the worst-selling Nintendo home console. But at least a few people bought them both?

What fascinates me about Nintendo's 2020 is that they don't live in a vacuum. This is a console launch year for Microsoft and Sony. We've all known that for a while now -- long enough for Nintendo to pivot. It almost seems like their strategy was just to not really compete. Ports and maybe an actual new game or two for the holidays don't stand a chance against new consoles.

Well tbh, the competition hasn't been that strong either. As of now, I have no reason to pick up a next gen console this holiday season, and I believe most people on this forum agree to that.

To make my point clearer, let me bring 'The List' out again

Nintendo-related games we knew about in January 2019 that were dated as being released in that year:
- Luigi's Mansion 3
- Fire Emblem: Three Houses
- Marvel Ultimate Alliance 3
- Yoshi's Crafted World
- Pokemon Switch
- Animal Crossing Switch
- New Super Mario Bros U Deluxe
- Dragon Quest XI: S
- Mario & Sonic 2020

Nintendo-related games we knew about in January 2020 that were dated as being released in this year:
- Animal Crossing: New Horizons
- Tokyo: Mirage Sessions #FE Encore
- Xenoblade Chronicles: Definitive Edition
- Bravely Default 2

This year has been sketchy from the beginning.

There's no point talking to you when we know for a fact this was always the plan from an insider who's always been 100% right but you're still denying it. Enjoy your paltry 2020, bro.
As someone who never had a wii u, yes I am enjoying my loaded 2020 thanks, will continue to do so with pikmin 3D

Pikmin 3 Deluxe getting announced finally is great, it didn't stick with me when I first played it but I might consider picking it up again! I care more so about the fact that this means we are just closer to the 3D collection announcement lol. I still have faith it will release in September, I'm assuming they want to hold the announcement back for something, maybe a mini Mario direct in the coming weeks.

As for captain's comments...yeah, that's worrying. As someone who is studying computer science/already experienced working as a Software Engineer, I can't imagine what's going on in their development teams. You are either working on a project or working on a project, that's it. Sure, when you finish a project there might be a cool down period of retrospective or additions to be made(dlc, updates, etc.), but I would hope you take all that freed up resources and put them into starting new projects. So either Nintendo is cooking up some BIG things for the coming years, or they are being way too overconfident in how fast they need to produce new titles.

And of course, I have no idea what Nintendo's whole enterprise structure looks like, and have no idea what kind of development practices they use at NST (I'm assuming, and sincerely hope, an Agile-based one, but I can be entirely wrong). Still, this is certainly worrying nonetheless.

This is a sad year for the Switch and a strange one for Nintendo.

Usually we expect having ports in the first 2 years in a console life and it peaks in its third and after, never in my life saw a console getting this much ports nearing its 4th year in the market?

its not about covid19, thats the lineup since the beginning of the year, with only 1 consloe to support and with all the success its having!?!? what is Nintendo doing with it? most games are even not developed by Nintendo? "Smash, Fire Emblem etc"

just by looking at Wii U Nintendo games and the Switch lineup it makes me wonder what in the blue hell Nintendo doing on the Switch.
They did the same with the Wii, once they reach success they just drop the ball for some reason.
I thought the past restructuring and the lack of a handheld would have sped up development but no.

"Pokémon 3 Deluxe! That's the one Timmy wanted."

This game will sell at least ten, if not fifteen, copies on soccer moms and/or disinterested dads alone. Nintendo stays winning.

Sorry, but that's not how I see it.

I see it as people being pumped for the next gen consoles, so much so that they are willing to grab onto any excuse to dump the current one, as PS4's lineup is pretty much transfering over to PS5, and Microsoft is gearing up with Xbox Series X. Nintendo? Even last year I've been hearing the typical excuses of "Nintendo's catalogue doesn't interest me/they don't make power focused consoles so why bother" and other flimsy excuses about how their Switch was somehow collecting dust despite the stellar releases one after another.

Now that they trip up their 2020 lineup due to external factors, the detractors are coming out of the woodworks to lambast every small output they could release, simply because it "couldn't match PS4/XB1's offering even late at this stage...and now who cares about this gen?".

So yeah, I'm sorry if I see it as nothing but doomposting, but even a release like Pikmin 3's shadowdrop being considered a poor move by Nintendo...on top of all the vitrol it receives "because its an old game"...I don't get it. It's not being treated to any fanfare (which in itself is sad) but people even seem to hate what would otherwise be a perfectly stellar, if not underrated game. Because it's not a triple A blockbuster like The Last of Us Part II...

Uh. Maybe for some people. But not for the people on this particular thread. I'm a Nintendo loyalist. I literally only appreciate TLoU1+2 and Bloodborne in regards to Sony's stable of games.
As far as Xbox is concerned...well, Xbox is Xbox and Xbox ain't known for 1st party games.

You can feel you are Nintendo's white knight all you like but your interpretation of our frustration is as narrow minded as those Nintendo haters you claim to see around here.

Logging in to say Nintendo has been fucking weird and showing signs of it since September and, Covid aside, they're doing absolutely zero to change my mind.

People thinking 2021 is going to somehow be stacked because of an underwhelming 2020 are falling into the same trap they always do.
Yep, we're going to get BotW2 in November (assuming it isn't delayed) and some ports, and Nintendo will say "this is enough"

It depends on the first 6-7 months for both Xbox and Ps5. If some big games like Ratchet, Demon's Souls, Horizon... are shceduled for early-mid 2021, Ps5 can get a lot of attention. Xbox seems to be already lagging behind, none of the 1st party games except Medium and Halo seem to be ready for 2020/2021.

If the release window is slow like it was for Ps4/XOne, Nintendo could easily benefit from big hitters during the first half of 2021.

Guess will see if it sells as well as you're predicting it too.

Shame people can't seem to judge it based on its own merits.

The drought on their next system is going to be absolutely fucking horrendous without the ports to rely on.

This Pikmin 3 shadow drop might be the biggest insult by a major gaming company in the past decade. I literally screamed "FUCK YOU" at my screen. I knew they said it wasn't going to be Persona 5 Switch but the hype they created by not announcing anything for months made me think they were just going to surprise us with it anyway. Absolutely unacceptable to do this to us. Once they knew a port of a 7yo game was expected, they should've cancelled this announcement.

Alright, hot take: no General Directs this year.

Just Twitter drops and 'partner' minis.

The mere suggestion that they would hang back and basically just throw scraps at their userbase for the latter half of the year would have had you laughed out of these threads back in January. How far we've fallen.

I would argue 2021 is a lot more important for this than 2020. I definitely think 2020 should be stronger but from a next gen strategy if they can have a killer 2021 from beginning to end it shows they can compete a lot better with the big boys than like BOTW2 at next gen launch and then not a whole lot in beginning of 2021.

Obviously worst case is disappointing 2020 AND disappoint 2021. For my own sanity I'm assuming Nintendo has good stuff planned for H1 2021.

Makes me laugh when I see "Clubhouse Games" in these lists of "But look! Nintendo DOES have new games!"

That's like calling the stocking stuffer from the Dollar Store a big gift.

Wonder if Pikmin 3 DX releasing on 10/30 might indicate 3D World DX in September to help kick off the Mario 35th anniversary general announcement then possibly 3D All Stars collection as the "big" November title?

Even if it doesn't, I'm looking forward to your explanation for why that's actually a good thing.
Okay.

Microsoft and Sony are in the year of launching a new console. That means a lot of marketing, a lot of online conversations and a lot of money invested in new consoles.

We know there is a lot of overlap between Switch owner and Sony / Microsoft owner. So, anything you use to compete with shiny new consoles with SSD and 4K is going to have a rough time.

You have a limited amount of resources that you can allocate. I think there is no point in using all your resources at a time when the competition is at its strongest. If you release a game with a lot of sales potential while many of your buyers are buying $500/$400 consoles, that's bad for your game, because your fanbase is currently investing their money, time and thought elsewhere. Instead, you don't care if a game like Pikmin 3 sells half because the mindhsare is elsewhere. Who cares? Half of few sales is few sales.

Considering the strategy on display, I now expect every Wii U game except for Amiibo Festival and Wii Party U to be ported over. The Zeldas and 3D World will surely make it, they'll find a way to put XCX and Fatal Frame 5 on the thing, they'll do the impossible to cram Nintendo Land and Star Fox Zero + Guard as well. Fuck it, throw everything in there. There are holes to be filled.

Nintendo is going to announce those ports with so much enthusiasm and think it's going to be a very well received announcement.
Nothing against the ports themselves, especially since we're still not 100% sure about what they're doing to them exactly, but yeah, it's hard to get excited about old Mario stuff.
