Seems like a lot of money when he wasn't a top streamer at the time and was quickly drowned out by the flood of other people playing the game.

jesus dude, getting paid $1m to play some vidya

what a world
Think you are missing the important part of the story (13 million followers)... He isn't getting paid to play a videogame he is getting paid to show something of to a audience, same way TV stations get paid for airing commercials based on their viewer numbers.

Kinda explains how he was in the executive box just in front of Neymar for their last Champions League game then. Good for him I guess.

Paying these streamers is way less that what they would have paid for a full on marketing campaign. Wonder how much they've spent marketing Anthem.

That probably brought them more money than if they spent it on tv spots or internet ads.

I remember the good old days when Pac-Man was released. When games were pure and only real gamers played.

Wasted money. Game is actually good so it would have blown up just the same even if they hadn't given Ninja one million dollars to play it.

Pretty amazing when he wasn't even the streamer with most viewers during the apex Legends launch

So they blew most of the marketing budget on Streamers? And it worked too.

PFFT no.

Shit, remember Fata1ity?

It's always been this way, we just have streaming now to make people into household names instead of monster deals.

Fatality still streams. To like 50 viewers on average.

EA had a lot of success promoting the launch of their game with streamers that I wonder if Epic has the right idea with what they are implementing on their store

I mean yeah, that makes sense. Whether you like him or not, dude is a big name and like anyone in a similar position has the ability to use that to earn a lot of money

It only seems strange if you're viewing it through the lens of someone from 5+ years in the past. World is changing super fast these days, this includes what leads people to become modern day celebrities.

Whew, and it's a legitimately great game too. Must've felt like the best money ever earned (as opposed to that weird Rick and Morty Fallout 76 thing where that whole stream looked like a struggle in finding enjoyment)

But now he's back to Fortnite and hasn't played Apex in weeks. So while in the short term it helped, i'm not sure how it'll play out in the long-term given the current stream numbers.

That's not the goal of advertising. Advertising is just to get the word out there and that's what happened.

Good ROI for EA. Does Ninja and other sponsored Twitchers need to disclose they are getting paid to do a specific stream though? I would expect they need to let people know it's an ad of sorts.

Youtubers and streamers need to say if their video or stream is sponsored, but not how much they are getting paid

You don't know that. He may not have played it had he not gotten paid and I'm sure they paid all the top streamers who streamed it from day 1. That absolutely helped get the name out there. The fact that the game is good and fun keeps it around.

Shroud should have got that money. Dude is doing a lot more for the game than Ninja. 100k subs and basically only plays Apex.

I understand the goal but now that this has came out then it makes sense why the stream numbers have taken a noise dive in the last few weeks and perhaps the game isn't as popular as we thought?

Not to mention, a lot of streamers were willingly playing the game for free since it was the new hype BR and i'm sure someone like Ninja would have given it a try regardless given he's streamed plenty of lesser BR games as a break from Fortnite.

AFAIK, last I asked, Ninja's rates were about 250k-350k "just to get out of bed" ie enter in a partnership with your game, and then 50k/hr for a sponsored stream. Seems to line up pretty well with EA's outlay for him here.

It's funny to see people parrot the "Apex launched with literally no marketing and became a massive success take notes other devs" line when the marketing budget was multi-millions, they just spent it all on streamers.

Whats kinda sad has been watching the BOTTOM of twitch APEX channel. There are tons (hundreds? thousands?) of people down there with 0 viewers streaming. I followed a couple just out of curiosity, almost all kids, and all of them stayed at 0 viewers for at least a week and almost all of them stopped streaming as far as I can tell.

The twitch game is rough
