How does that make any sense when the PS5 is also sold out despite much larger supply
Consoles will sell out through March or April. It follows then that if Xbox had more in stock, they'd have higher numbers sold. Playstation too.

what? if xbox had the same supply the numbers would be equal to ps5. thats literally the only reason for the ratio currently.

You can't really say that. Xbox could have sold 50k units to 90k potential customers, where Sony sold 100k units to 300k potential customers. Raising the Xbox units to match Sony's doesn't mean sales will match.

When both are sold out the only thing you can predict is nothing.

Microsoft produced less consoles than Sony is all this tells us. It also tells us the Series S isn't selling the best everywhere but the demand for Series X is still high

People read the phrase 'launch numbers will be supply constrained' and have now twisted it into 'launch numbers tell us nothing because they're supply constrained'.

Don't read too much into it, I suppose.

S will probably pick up in the upcoming years. X is more for the enthusiast, the same ones that try hard to get a console during the launch period

Weird how people want to downplay PS5 being the best ever launch in certain countries with...well both were supply constrained. So? Then it would have sold more... lol
You would think this was the first console launch ever, it's simple ps5 has higher demand but the Xbox is still sold out. Launches always depend on stock and the ps5 clearly had the most stock ever lmao just shows the crazy demand considering the amount of people complaining about being unable to get one.

you're right it doesn't, but its pretty much guaranteed at those numbers.

Best console launch in France

  • 107k - PS5
  • 105k - Switch
  • 95k - Wii
  • 90k - PS4
  • 50k - Xbox One
  • 37k - Xbox Series X/S
And given the hype and restocks sell out in literally 5 sec, it could have topped 150K+ easily
Damn xbox actually sold worse. Sony really dominating in europe. It's always been mainstream as hell to have a playstation especially for fifa and cod.

Brazil
It kinda make senses for Sony to have more consoles produced. XSX's APU is larger and this year was very busy on TSMC.

Both did amazing, I actually think MS did better because the PS5 demand is way too high compared to Xbox Series and they handled it very well.

Just got a PS5 in a new restock today in Brazil, it was tough. I was definitely understimating that so many people in Brazil would fork almost $1000 for a console.

Xbox has aligned itself so closely with PC, even on their exclusives, it's impossible to expect Xbox consoles themselves to keep pace with the PS5. Let's see some Gamepass numbers across Pc and Xbox Series combined to get a better idea.

I personally have a PC and Gamepass. It's hard for me to justify also buying an Xbox Series Console.

I mean it's not like XSX and S are sitting on shelves, right? They just didn't pump out consoles to sell.

Is the Series S no longer a next gen Xbox? XSX maybe sold out but there are still Xboxes for sale on shelves.

As good as Gamepass is Microsoft really messed up not having a Halo ready at launch. Numbers would have been much better if it wasn't delayed.
Are you deliberately being dense? Xbox numbers are supply constrained, its selling without Halo, and will continue to do so. Halo in 2021 will be more impactful then 2020.

A lot of selective understanding in these threads I presume.. If the tables were turned and MS had 3:1 available units, the point in case would be accepted without a doubt. :)

If every console by the big 3 (except Wii U) always sell out - the record Sony is breaking here is available launch units, nothing else..
Very impressive launch nonetheless, there must have been a lot more PS5:s around than xboxes.

They produced a lot because the demand was too high. Just look at Ebay.

Reading comments on these sales number threads is liked reading the don't read too much into ps4 million day-one sales article lol. Sold-out and supplier constraint or not, 107k vs 37k that is almost 3 to 1, a big different in number.

Basically. I don't know why people are so hesitant to declare the PS5 is going to outsell the Xbox Series, especially worldwide. Sony didn't fumble and lose any momentum from last gen. They arguably have gained some. Microsoft themselves have pretty much conceded that and are diversifying in response.

Wish these posts would provide some evidence. Which country? What store? Which location? Otherwise this means nothing.

Available in France on CDiscount, FNAC, Carrefour...etc as I'm writing this post. In fact, I've just checked right now, the Serie X is also available on carrefour.fr

Every GameStop in my metro area here in North Carolina received between 6 and 12 XSXs and between 0 (!) and 4 PS5s. It's anecdotal, sure, and it's not even France. But I've heard zilch to the contrary.

Xbox Series is selling "fine." PS5 is on fire.

It reflects what i'm currently seeing in France.
For ordinary people (not us nerds with chrome extensions and alerts set up for every website) it's nearly impossible to find/buy a PS5 whereas Series X are now commonly found on the shelves though they don't stay long XD

some of europe that is big on PC (Germany, Poland, Czech republic etc) will be interesting to see if there is a drop in Xbox numbers vs last gen. Gamepass is still better on console than PC but if first party is the main attraction then PC delivers all of that.

I can confirm that where I come from in middle east. at launch the S was widely available. Yesterday I saw many XsX ones. This is probably the case in many places outside of US.

PS5 feels like a myth here. You hear about it, but you never see it lol.

Eeer, let's not get too carried away.

For reference, at the end of 2019 we had 6 million PS4 vs 1,75 million Xbox One in France.

Believe it or not, despite this huge difference, France is where Xbox has its best market share among any european market (not UK).

While supply was constrained, there will also be reasons why the supply was provided in the ratios it was. MS may have sold more if they'd shipped more, but looking historically at XB1 launch - perhaps not much more. 'supply constrained' isn't a get out of jail free card for different results. It clouds the waters somewhat but thats about all

Since someone already listed french stores, I'll answer for Germany: XSS is currently in stock at MediaMarkt.de. From my observation XSS is always available at some online store in Germany.

Disappointing numbers for MS, but then again, they started manufacturing consoles later than Sony.

That's the price they pay for waiting longer on RDNA2; and for splitting their manufacturing across both the Series X and Series S on launch day.

So this proves that the demans for series S is not as high as PS5 or X.
Im guessing early adoptera are not interested in a lower specced machine - interesting to see how it pans out closer toto christmas. :)
In Sweden all 3 are sold out, small market but there seems to be a shift from PS to Xbox again..
360 was very popular here, Xbone - not so much :)

If they are both out of supply it does not matter.. You cant sell xboxes that does not exist.

The way some are trying to imagine a world where it's not really possible to say PS5 would be potentially more wanted than XBSX and both selling out probably means they would have sold the same with equal stock is.. amazing :p

That's denying the popularity of both brand in the world for the last generation + the total misfire of Microsoft to show XBSX was a next gen console (cross gen titles, lackluster first showing, confusing branding, the Halo catastrophe) versus Sony having all the brand hype, momentum, actual next gen only experiences with amazing (enough) graphics, UE5 demo being the first viral "this is next gen" moment associated to the console..

Being like "i'm sure they would have sold the same" is delusional.

Absolutely. And waiting for the RDNA2 to be ready or not, you can be sure that prior to launch, Microsoft made extensive market researches, identified and analyzed the needs of the market, the hype around the Xbox brand, the Series X/S, the number of preorders, then manufactured and supplied the right number of consoles accordingly to these researches.

They are sold out pretty much everywhere, that's a fact. But not quite for the reason most people think here...

There are plenty of post from latin american posters and european posters about XSS being available. One poster even posted pictures of them piled up at his store.

Does anyone have a good explanation for why Sony was seemingly able to produce around twice the amount of consoles for launch compared to Microsoft?

Everything is obviously super difficult this year, but Sony was still able to build more consoles for launch than with PS4 it seems, while MS has less out than they did with XBOX ONE.

Did the Series X come in very hot despite all the lead up making it sound like it was actually Sony that was behind? Capacity problems with launching two consoles at once? Underestimating demand?
