Yea there are story missions to do, but the related prompts don't necessarily scream out at you from among the many flashing things on the world map.Played like 80% of the Red War or whatever it was called and then thongs were vaulted and I was totally lost. Bought 2 expansions thinking it would help but ultimately I just played through raids or strikes or missions or whatever without any idea what was happening or why I was doing it. Eventually uninstalled, tried to go back to it a year later and it was even worse AND i was just completely lost.
What the hell. There's like 5 planets immediately available to me. I did the introductory mission. The meditating one. Then hopped on a spaceship to outer space. Trying to just do public events, I somehow just did a mission for some Eliksni guy who had his arm ripped off by the apparent leader of the race. What the heck am I doing? Is there an in game guide somewhere?
For what it's worth, I believe I got the "Legacy Collection." Not sure exactly what that changes. It feels like it gave me access to stuff I should have had to work for.
The "why I was doing it" part is basically just bragging rights it seems. You grind to get better loot to do the end game content so you can get better loot so you can do the harder version of the end game content so you can beat it and brag about how you did the hard endgame content.Played like 80% of the Red War or whatever it was called and then thongs were vaulted and I was totally lost. yea that's no bueno. The notable one was when I reinstalled it it made me play the first mission in a expansion I didn't own and it was all choked up about a character I had no idea had died. Giving me no choice to not play that kinda soured me right from the start.
I tried to follow the quest stuff but after the introductory missions so much crap lit up. Do X things on each planet etc. It just felt so aimless.
I think what's really needed is like...a separate UI -- or even a parallel UI -- that clearly denotes STORY ADVANCEMENT activities and missions. Something with check boxes and alternate color icons on the world map.As a longtime D2 player I definitely agree the new-player experience needs to be almost completely redone. The intro mission works well enough, but then you are just thrown into the deepest of deep ends. If I just started today, especially as a F2P player, I would just be immensely lost.
The fact that a lot of crucial story was vaulted long ago (and is unlikely to return) does not help things at all.
I'll try to find this. Is this in the Quests tab, or do I need to find some NPC at the tower? The mission you did with the Eliksni guy is from Beyond Light.
The game is super bad at the new player experience and only getting worst with more paid content than ever, but the quest log will have tabs for stuff (split by current season, Witch Queen, Exotic Quests and I think Shadowkeep and Beyond Light are both in the same one now because they are "old") and if you select it, it will actually give you some direction.
It can be very confusing. It's a fucking confusing shitshow of a game and I played both the first game and the second one for awhile at launch. I can't imagine how much more confusing it became when it already was extremely clumsy to navigate.
It isn't. But having not played since launch, I wouldn't expect you to know that much either. Assume your experience -- which is as the game was...4 years ago? -- is outdated and in need of perspective. The actual service part of it is a goddamn micromonetized nightmare of menus
2 years ago. Installed it for a month to play with some friends at pandemic onset. Still not for me.It can be very confusing.

I keep thinking that a Destiny story collection would be amazing once The Final Shape is out. Just contain all the campaigns from D1 onwards, rework what needs reworkig, add extra cutscenes where necessary, and go nuts.I eventually got over the hump of the new player experience...by watching all the previous vaulted content. Let me tell you that took hours upon hours.
At this point I think Bungie should make offline versions of the old campaigns/seasons to throw on places like gamepass and psplus. Hook the singleplayer only crowd and get them caught up on the story.
It'd probably take up too many resources though. Still it's kinda sad that basically everything Bungie makes from 2017 on has a shelf life of 3-4 years.
It's in the quest tab, you should be able to go down to filter them. The first one will just have everything.I'll try to find this. Is this in the Quests tab, or do I need to find some NPC at the tower?
The power ups, weapons, even the grenades are beautifully done. I do give them that. Bungie knows how to make a shooter. They just suck at the other part.just gotta try to enjoy space guns go BRRR against bad guys, as that is where destiny is still head and shoulders above any looter/shooter game on the market atm
everything else you will learn in time either by people explaining mechanics or via websites/YouTube/discord
No thanks, I mean it's a generous offer, but most of my gaming is done solo. Relying on a community to explain and help guide new players in place of the developer is going to turn some people off, for a variety of reasons. It's a hard ask personally, I'd be more willing to join a community if there was a mutual interest, not join a gaming community to develop said interest. Social anxiety and all that jazz.If anyone wants to play Destiny 2 and is discouraged by this thread, join the ERA Destiny Discord community and I'm sure there are several people there who would show you around and explain things to you.
The game is best when played with friends.
And give it time, you'll understand why this game remains popular after so many years. Don't be like, "too many icons on the map blinking, my mind can't comprehend, have to uninstall!"
Even at release it was super confusing for someone who hadn't played the original DestinyAs someone who played Destiny 2 pretty extensively at launch and through the earlier expansions the game is genuinely confusing as heck to try and get in to now. I tried to redownload it when it was still on gamepass got overwhelmed and deleted it lol.
Destiny shines the brightest when playing in a group. I've been fortunate to have found two different groups throughout Destiny 1 and 2. My current group has been raiding together for almost three years now. And my best experiences have been with them, when we are finally able to conquer a difficult encounter, when everyone's cylinders are firing at the same time. It's the best feeling. No thanks, I mean it's a generous offer, but most of my gaming is done solo. Agreed. Every time they vault content and whenever a season ends, they should put out recap videos summarizing the story that new (or returning) players will otherwise never see. Right now they're leaning on the community to do that, but they should be officially produced and accessible from in game and their YouTube channel. The fact that The Red War and The Forsaken campaigns have been vaulted, both of which contain pretty significant story beats that any new player would be lost without knowing, is pretty crazy. The Timeline on the Destinations screen really should just have short little movies quickly showing and explaining everything that has happened each season instead of some generic text.
I found it easier to play FFXI and that's a game from 20 odd years ago versus returning to D2.
