Russ Pitts who was the former lead at the Escapist was the dude that was all about not wanting to deal with politics or whatever. I believe he left though. Don't know what the deal is with them anymore.

First off, i didn't realize this was a pure masturbatory exercise where only blind praise and warm fuzzy feelings were allowed. Should have been in the OP. Secondly, for all your talk of derails, you're the one derailing the hype train into reality land with your inability to take a different opinion. There is no toxicity on my behalf towards Shinobi, but The Escapist is a shithole that was instrumental in GG and it was until recently one of its last bastions. So excuse me if i have no trust in the people running it or any interest whatsoever in its success or platforming on Era.

Because everyone's problem with the Escapist (the guy who wrote the ethics article) left and it's really more about a popular Era poster getting a higher profile gig than your (now outdated) problems with the site.
That's not really why people have a problem with that site, though.
Congrats, but Pitts was not the only problem with The Escapist and I won't be giving it any clicks now or in the future.
This show looks fun and I'm gonna love checking it out. The escapist part definitely irked me a bit but I'm willing to give this a shot, especially since this already seems much better than a lot of the stuff I've seen them put out. Even forgetting the stuff everyone here is bringing up about the escapist, a lot of their content has been nooot that greaaat. This looks cool though and I'm looking forward to it!

Russ Pitts is a dick and The Escapist has gone through some terrible phases, but sometimes I'll see a name there that surprises me. For all the talk about trying to transcend politics or whatever, the site has also made room for, say, an article questioning whether James Bond can transcend its sexist and imperialist roots.
The brand is tainted enough that the ~5 times a year I check it out is more than enough for me, but it's managed to exceed my very low expectations most of those times. Shinobi wouldn't be the first seemingly decent individual to take money from them.
I don't even know how you would Google it, tbh. Searching for The Escapist just brings up the site or the game The Escapists. I googled "why do people hate the escapist" and get a bunch of forum posts from 2015. Like, was there something recent I should know about?
I too have no idea why we're supposed to hate The Escapist now that Pitts is gone.

I'm not sure why people are acting like Russ Pitts was the only reason to have issue with The Escapist. The site was a bastion for GG and was instrumental in assisting the reach and level of toxicity that was able to come out of it long before he relaunched the site, Pitts only contributed to the issue when he relaunched the site with the pathetic notion of "leaving politics at the door".
Being so heavily associated with GG isn't something that you get to just wash away after a couple of months of not being total dogshit.

By 2014 (or was it in 2015 they published that ridiculously incompetent and harmful garbage article about Gamergate which among other things gave a megaphone to a deranged lunatic?) The Escapist had become a hugely enormous piece of shit that had been ran off a cliff and crashed right into a Gamergate cesspool. The people who ran The Escapist at this time seemed to be proper fucking dirtbags.
No idea what transpired until suddenly Russ Pitts had apparently taken the reigns, seemed to try to course correct from the site's current position of lying face down drowning in a cesspool. Then he failed by saying something stupid about "no politics" and for some reason decided to butt heads with targets of Gamergate. He eventually appeared to realize he was doing the opposite of good, decided to leave, and since then I don't know what's going on. With him or The Escapist.
Those are my vague general recollections.
I have no idea what people are running things at The Escapist these days. Not particularly willing to give them a shot. Not with that site's history.
I do not understand why people are so keen on trying to keep its putrid husk alive? Pitts had some nostalgic attachment to the site, having worked there before it went down the crapper. But with him having let go, why would anyone want to grab onto this shitstained turd? It is difficult for me to put trust in such people.

Hey guys. So, I wasn't actually expecting to see a thread get made but since it did, I suppose I'd chime in a bit since I see some conflicted posts. I know about The Escapist's prior history. When I was approached I was a very hesitant because of it, but soon found out that Pitts was no longer there. The outlet is now run by Nick Calandra who's the EiC, and who I've known for quite some time. He's a good person who also created the Gameumentary documentary series on YouTube documenting different game studios and has always been a solid force for good.
As far as I'm aware, and I asked because that was my first question, Pitts and all the former staff of his ilk are long gone. I think everyone who knows me knows I couldn't be any farther on the opposite end of the spectrum from a GG'er, and so is Nick. Obviously I'd never had agreed if there were any such ties or malicious things happening around there now. Since there's new leadership that stressed that things will be different with a new team, I agreed. This is only a little side project of mine in my spare time. I of course can't control the conduct of other staff on there if anything comes up in the future. But things would definitely change if anything egregious happens.
I hope everyone knows from my character and history that I've always stood up for the betterment of the industry and everyone involved in it. No one's wrong in how they feel. If you don't want to support it, there's absolutely no problem in that at all, and no hard feelings from me.

It would probably be a very good idea for the new EiC to write a press release explaining that the GG cancer is now removed from the staff entirely.
There is no way I would have gone to that site given its past and recent history, and I am definitely not the only one.
Someone telling me to check out something on the Escapist is the same as someone telling me to check out a post on Kotaku In Action.

I'm only saying that since there's new leadership and a new team, it's basically a new site retaining the same name. Anyway, again, it's fully understandable to have those feelings. But there's some clarification at least on my part.
He is! And the "no politics" thing is pretty funny since MovieBob's videos on there mostly deal with politics lol
