As someone who don't know anything about the Switch and thinking of getting one at Christmas: What do I need the memory cards for? Will 64GB be suffice (I like that Zelda/Triforce symbol)? I'm mostly interested in Switch exclusives like Link's Awakening, BotW, maybe Darkest Dungeon, etc.

The microSD card is only for digital games... if you buy physical games, not required. If you do buy only a few digital indie games, the 32GB of intermal memory should be enough.

The Switch is not like the PS4 and Xbox One in the sense that you have to install the games on the system. On physical games, the Switch reads the game directly from the cartridge (on the PS4/Xbox, the game is read from the internal storage only... the disc is only usable to install the game and acts as an unlock key).

Quite a few switch physical games have mandatory downloads, so you can't totally ignore storage unless you're careful what you buy

Put that Nintendo Cloud to the test today and did a trade in of old console without being able to do a system to system transfer.

Good news, it was super easy to get my profile on new Switch and download all my saves through Nintendo Online cloud saves.

A+

15hrs deep into redownloading my games, my switch has only downloaded 115gb of data.

To think i used to complain about my ps4 downloading slow.

A Switch Pro won't even be competitive with a normal PS4 so what's the point in terms of competing with next gen systems? Sure Nintendo might release a more powerful model, but it's not to compete. They have a history of releasing revisions of their handhelds to get people to double dip.
I'm not talking about competition. That's an American ideal. Nintendo has never been a company that seems to care about what everyone else is doing. They do their own thing and will continue to which makes them unique.

I'm talking about missing out on next gen third party games. Switch already got/getting games like Doom 2, Witcher 3, Outerworlds, Dead by Daylight, Friday the 13th.... They want more games on their platform and if that requires more powerful tech than I'm sure they will make it. Wouldn't be surprised if GTA5, Red Dead 2, Death Stranding and others make their way over eventually.

Not really sure why everyone in this thread thinks Nintendo can't make good hardware that sells.

I'd say 64GB is enough, then I realized I buy so much stuff for switch I needed to go to 128, then 256...

You might find out the same thing, but maybe not, 64 should suffice.

I remember buying a 200gb card thinking it would be overkill...those were simpler times, too many Switch games, not going to be shocked if by the end I have a 2TB card.

So, I decided to sell my launch date Switch (don't care about homebrew) and I was wondering... for you the ones that replaced their old Switch, did you get a different color? My original one is gray, and I was wondering if I should get the neon one.

What did you do?
Anyone? I'm about to go to GameStop in a few more hours. I'm basically asking for validation on my choice.

And when I was talking about being competitive, I was referring to power. A Switch Pro won't even match a PS4 in power, so why would third parties try to port their next gen games to it? Any Switch Pro owners would also only be a small subset of the Switch population. It wouldn't be a good use of time and resources to port games that only Switch Pro owners could play. At best, if third parties are still making PS4 ports next gen, then you could hope for a Switch port, but if they moved on, then I don't see them paying attention to a Switch Pro. Nintendo is going to need to do a Switch 2 in 3 years if they still want more ports from third parties, but if the power differential is so large, then Nintendo would be better served paying for third party Switch exclusives that are tailored for the platform.

We got the gray at launch, and went with the multi-colored Neon for our second Switch to spice things up! At the same time, can't you just get a pair of gray Joy-Con if you don't like your decision after the fact? The Joy-Cons are interchangeable anyway. :)

i swapped from neon to neon. i don't think it honestly matters, you can easily buy new joycons and there are a ton of new colors coming out like purple and stuff. Just make sure the new one you get is a new model, it should have an all red box

i did mine at gamestop, I bought mine first (paid $299+tax) took it home did the xfer (took ~5 mins) swapped microSD cards applied new screen protector then took the old one back in its box and traded in and got $225 in trade credit. I don't mind having TC so it wasn't a big deal, if you wanna minimize cash spend then you'll want to trade and buy in the same transaction which means making sure your profile is in the cloud, etc since I doubt you'll be able to profile transfer in store. Make sure you don't leave your old microSD card (or any games) in your old switch. You need the dock, joycons, switch, joycon dock thing, USB-C power cable, and those little wrist strap things for the joycons to trade in.

If you don't deactivate your old system in store I'm not sure if there is a way to do it on the web either.

After trying some tricks, I think I have to admit that my dock may be broken. Black frames randomly appear when playing on the TV. Dammit.

its most likely your HDMI cable, the dock really has almost no internal electronics. Try using a diff HDMI cable. You've never used a third party dock, right? Nintendo doesn't properly do USB-C/HDMI and it is only most obvious when using a third party dock.

That's what I thought too, but I tried to plug this cable on my PC video out and never had the issue. Tonight i'll try another cable on the Switch itself.
And no, no third party dock

Just noticed that Swedish stores are charging $31 (300 SEK) more for the new version than the old. Is this the case as well in any other country? I fear that the Swedish Nintendo distributor is getting greedy again (they overpriced the SNES classic by a LOT.)

Took my launch model Switch and a couple of older, unwanted games to Gamestop. Cost $27 to upgrade to the newer model...not bad!

LOL, not about to go take out all the boxes, but here's where I keep most of my game cases. I take the games out of the cases I open and keep them in a binder. I use a game collection app to keep track of everything.

Three of the shelves each have three rows of cases:

And then the larger boxes are on my main game shelf unit. Some of them are hidden behind other games, like the Xenoblade 2 CE.

I'm part of a group of Switch enthusiasts on Twitter- some of the people there have 400-500 physical Switch games!
Wtf such an eye opening

Probably down to the Swedish chemical tax that applies to electronics that increased on August 1st.

Yep that happened to me too. Screen would randomly just turn black for a few seconds every few hours, ended up having to get a new one because Nintendo's repair fee was almost the same price as just buying one.

It seems to be the same in Denmark. The updated Switch is up for 2699,- DKK/359€ which is 300-400,- DKK more than the old model sold for depending on store etc.
The Switch Lite is also up for pre-order at the most popular places for 1999,- DKK/267€ which seems overpriced, especially compared to the original Switch which usually cost 2400,- DKK at most.

I expect those prices to go down after launch though. But personally I'm not buying any more Nintendo hardware until they fix their shitty, drifting Joy-Cons.

I would bet strongly that there's a screen lottery. Even on the original Switch model there can be pretty substantial variations between different units' screens. Those kinds of differences are probably just within that margin of variation rather than any deliberate or consistent screen upgrade.

Bolded is just not true.

Playing Paladins in handheld usually got my old Switch to run the fans pretty hard but so far after 2 hours they haven't come on at all. Beautiful.

Sure it is. Plenty of people have complained about it on this very site. Some screens are slightly warmer, some are slightly cooler. some are slightly more washed out than others, etc. This is pretty common across a lot of consumer electronics.
The screen on my new Switch V2 is definitely warmer than my launch edition Switch. It is noticeable immediately after first boot up.

Not that I'm complaining; I actually prefer the warmer screen, but that's subjective.

No idea. They weren't particular about mine - had the original box and all the pieces packed in plastic, and the dude was "chill" as my son calls it. Didn't notice the back was loose, one of the joy cons has minor drift, etc ... Now I have the new unit, and two sets of joy cons that work. Just my experience
LOL man that is not a good employee or they really don't care. No wonder they lose money hand over fist. Who would buy a used Switch with joycon drift lol?

Well traditionally a slightly warmer screen is more accurate. Industry standard is D65, akin to a sunny or slightly overcast day, and I cannot for the life of me stand cold displays. Neutral is almost always tilted toward blue as well.

Im hoping to see some comparisons shortly but the screen lottery is definitely in play here. I have a feeling overall screens will be worse than launch units as Nintendo moved suppliers from where apple gets their screens to cheaper alternatives.
Holy shit at that guy's post. The original Switch screens are fucking 7200K LOL? That's blue as all hell.

The new one is still too blue for the industry standard but definitely still good. I prefer straight up D65 for most stuff on my calibrated TV. 7200 is honestly gross to me. Skin tones start looking like corpses.

Might finally have to look into a Switch here. I really disliked the old screen.

Also, anybody hearing about this burnt network card stuff on new Switches? There is a reddit thread.

The SEK has declined over 10% since the launch of the original Switch, might come from that.
