As the items slowly arrive for my home theater upgrade, I am faced with the age old question of "What is the first thing I watch in order to show off what this thing can do?".

What have you tested out your new audio/video toys with in the Past? What would be the first thing you tested tonight?

Throughout my many different upgrades throughout the years I have come up with the following:

-When I got my first Surround Sound setup around 1993-ish I played King Arthur's World on the SNES because it was presented in Dolby Surround. (On a side note, the first CD I ever played on my brand new CD player was Beck's Mellow Gold in 1994, thanks BMG!)

-When I got my first 4 head VCR, I had the THX Star Wars trilogy on VHS that looked and sounded fantastic for the time.

-In 1994 I bought a Sony 39" TV (with picture in a picture!), I distinctly remember plugging in my friend's PS1 and watching the dinosaur intro in awe. We went on to play Ridge Race and Battle Arena Toshinden. That TV weighed a fucking ton.

-After I bought my first subwoofer sometime in 1995, I had a surround sound test CD that had a jet plane landing on a runway that was simply unreal. The movie White Squall was the go to movie to show off my TV and sound system at the time (1996!).

-The first DVD I ever played was The Matrix on my PS2.

-I was not on the cutting edge of the 1080p generation, but in 2007 I upgraded and we watched Finding Nemo on DVD the first night we got our new set home. I also distinctly remember playing Bioshock 1 immediately followed by Gears of War 1 on my Xbox 360 in that sweet 1080p.

-My first 3D movie at home was the first Avengers I think?

-I know I just threw out all these old memories but I can't remember anything special I did for my first 4K just a few years ago.

So what are you watching/playing/listing in order to show off and test that sweet new home theater set up?

Blade Runner 2049 and Edge of Tomorrow, the latter of which can be a sub killer at super loud volumes

Ford v Ferrari UHD has a great Atmos track with nicely balanced bass during the racing scenes. Not too shabby in the picture quality department either.

I recently built out a brand new home theater, though my seats are in purgatory. I did Casino Royale as one of the first movies I watched. With the kids we did Toy Story 4, Sonic, and trolls.

basically im only watching movies ive seen cause the theaters not really done.

When I finally got a good 4KTV and a respectable sound system, I played Fury Road on Blu-Ray. It damn near like seeing it theaters again. I watched hundreds of movies on my set up since, and I've been very satisficed with it.

When I hooked up my first 5.1 surround sound system about 15 years ago Metal Gear Solid 3 was the first thing I popped in.

I was watching a dude on YouTube talking about what his biggest regrets were in hindsight after his home theater was completed. He said that he spent so much money to make sure there was plenty of seating for the entire family and some guests when in reality he was the only person in the house that used the room so he was almost always alone surrounded by empty seats.

Ha that sucks.

Shouldn't happen, we do family movies together. And my wife and I watch stuff together as well.

Not that I would mind. I love watching a movie by myself.

One of my favorite tests for a home theater is I am Legend where he's driving the mustang. I used to sell Systems with that scene. If you have it just put that on lol.

i think the first one i'm going to when we upgrade our new system (which will probably sport the LG CX) is the 4K UHD remaster of 'Blade Runner'. is that a good idea? i've heard it's great for that

For our C9 OLED, we put on the UHD for Alien. Good gawd. Once Ripley activates the self destruct sequence. The strobing lights contrasting against the pitch black dark of the hallways - perfection. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jz4kXFI_VtE&t=1s

Also, a test for streaming and the OLED I like is the nightclub scene from Neon Demon (on Prime). The reds flashing with the blacks is incredible on OLED. TVs with edge lighting can deal. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jIgeBzcwKZ0

I just got a 77'' CX along with a Sonos Arc + Gen 3 sub, which can do Dolby Atmos. The first thing I watched was Our Planet on Netflix. Looked absolutely gorgeous, despite it being a stream. Then I watched the Infinity War movies on UHD to try out Atmos. Gaming wise I sort of bounced around from Ghosts of Tsushima to Ori on Xbox.

Still need to get to Mad Max, John Wick 3 and some of my other UHDs. Not enough time in the day.

Every new sound system I get I always test it out with three movies:

1. Matrix
2. Die Hard
3. Suspiria

My new(er) sound test is Ready Player One. The race in the beginning is incredible and a true showcase of what Atmos can do.

I have a Denon x2700h and HTD Level 3's coming on Wednesday to replace my Sony Cores. I'm so stoked.
