As the items slowly arrive for my home theater upgrade, I am faced with the age old question of "What is the first thing I watch in order to show off what this thing can do?".
What have you tested out your new audio/video toys with in the Past? What would be the first thing you tested tonight?
Throughout my many different upgrades throughout the years I have come up with the following:
-When I got my first Surround Sound setup around 1993-ish I played King Arthur's World on the SNES because it was presented in Dolby Surround. (On a side note, the first CD I ever played on my brand new CD player was Beck's Mellow Gold in 1994, thanks BMG!)
-When I got my first 4 head VCR, I had the THX Star Wars trilogy on VHS that looked and sounded fantastic for the time.
-In 1994 I bought a Sony 39" TV (with picture in a picture!), I distinctly remember plugging in my friend's PS1 and watching the dinosaur intro in awe. We went on to play Ridge Race and Battle Arena Toshinden. That TV weighed a fucking ton.
-After I bought my first subwoofer sometime in 1995, I had a surround sound test CD that had a jet plane landing on a runway that was simply unreal. The movie White Squall was the go to movie to show off my TV and sound system at the time (1996!).
-The first DVD I ever played was The Matrix on my PS2.
-I was not on the cutting edge of the 1080p generation, but in 2007 I upgraded and we watched Finding Nemo on DVD the first night we got our new set home. I also distinctly remember playing Bioshock 1 immediately followed by Gears of War 1 on my Xbox 360 in that sweet 1080p.
-My first 3D movie at home was the first Avengers I think?
-I know I just threw out all these old memories but I can't remember anything special I did for my first 4K just a few years ago.
So what are you watching/playing/listing in order to show off and test that sweet new home theater set up?
