I'm just glad it plays so well. I was really concerned that 343 would overcorrect and go into full Halo CE fetish mode like a loud minority thinks they want.
But aside form the various boost/hover related powers (rip) the game controls like halo 5. Although sprinting and sliding don't seem fast enough to be worth using.
I was extremely skeptical of the grappleshot, because it felt like a gimmick. But it is implemented so well that I fully expect it to be a permanent part of the arsenal going forward. It feels just as essential as grenades, melee and gunfire and with a little experimentation, can elevate all of them.
Need to gain ground quickly? Grapple. Need a power weapon? Grapple. Run out of ammo against a guy using a BR? Grapple him and reel yourself in for a melee. Chasing a guy around a corner? You can actually grapple and use your momentum to pull you aroud the corner faster And that's just after a day of playing. I can't wait to see the tricks tha the community comes up with using it.
I can easily see the grapple becoming its own thing with infinite ammo going forward. It's that revolutionary and integral.
And while I miss 343's more militaristic designs for human weapons (RIP BR85. You were the best) their alien weapons are all bangers. The pulse carbine takes the incredibly overstuffed sandbox of alien guns and merges 3 largely generic ones into one awesome gun. Take the basic role of the covenant carbine, the seeking properties of the boltshot and the overall asthetic of the storm rifle and you come off with an excellent and unique gun.
The heatwave is almost impossibly fun. And being able to swap between veritcal spread for single targets and horizontal spread for groups is *chef's kiss*.
The shock rifle is an alien DMR that fires electric bolts at precision targets.....and then those bolts chain to nearby enemies. So you can focus on headshotting an elite while taking out his grunts at the same time with chain damage. Genius.
Halo's weapon sandbox had become increasingly bloated with guns that were essentially mild remixes of each other.
AR-Storm Rifle-suppressor
BR-DMR-LR-Carbine
Sniper-Beam rifle-Binary Rifle
That's 10 weapons from the last game that essentially have the same purpose, plus or minus a gimmick or two. Most of these are gone or compressed into newer, more unique guns. They've given the sandbox a good pruning but kept the more unique elemtents. It's the biggest change to the weapon lineup since Halo 2.
