Mass shootings like these ones are terrorism. They don't just affect the friends and family of those killed they affect millions.

The aim is to strike terror into people and the killings are secondary to that aim. They can't in any way be compared to day to day deaths the way Neil has.

Seems like people are missing the whole point.

40 people die every 48 hours to gun violence.

We only hear about the localized mass shootings.

Neil is on point. Set aside your anger and focus on what he's saying.
If one of your friends dies from suicide, i hope you won't tell his family 'well people also die in mass shootings you know'.

He is not dimishing the mass shootings.

He is pointing out that the nation diminishes everyday shooting deaths.

The other stats actually strengthen his point, because more people are dying every 48 hours to a multitude of things that everyone just shrugs off because it doesn't have as much spectacle as phone videos of people running and screaming for their lives.

He is 100% correct. People are missing the point because they are angry and want a straightforward assessment of situation.

There is a big picture issue here, but everyone is hyperfocused with sensitivity right now because we're dealing with another fucking mass shooting and nobody in a lawmaking position wants to fix it. It's just going to be prayed away like the last one and the one before that and all the others.

So everybody is missing the point except for you. Or he's made a moronic point and you're defending someone you like.

I wonder which it is.

false equivalency, non contextual, misinformation, attention seeking, whataboutism.
Everything a logical sane person shouldn't have. But he isn't, no wonder he couldn't figure out whether the women was consenting/comfortable or not during his sexual harrasment case.

"Liebot, what is the most whataboutist tweet?"

What if, and hear me out here, we decided that we wanted to cut down on the number of fatal medical accidents and also have a record of lethal public violence that is more in line with all other industrialized nations?

I want you to sit back, and ask yourself.

What the fuck is the point is NDG tweeting this?

Is it to get people to stop being angry about this? Is it to discourage people from taking action to enact common sense gun laws? To not call out Republicans for their utter indifference to gun control, which, by the way, would also cut down on the number of non-mass shooting deaths?

Because any of those points make him an asshole. We should be angry about this. We should be outraged. Calling out other bad things in the world is the most obvious, stupid whataboutism I've ever seen.

Sincere opinion here, stop posting and think about it. You're making an ass out of yourself.

That is as tone deaf as you can get. Sure that stuff kills more, but we're actively trying to resolve those issues, we aren't doing shit about gun control.

he's a fucking communicator. it's on him and on him alone to get whatever point he's trying to make across and if what you're saying is correct, then he failed miserably.

Some of those stats, especially the flu one, I wasn't aware of. Probably from all the anti-vaxxers.

The message is in poor taste, but I think there's a point in there somewhere

Tell that to the families of the deceased, Neil.

They might be suffering from PTSD right now, having suicidal thoughts or even worse...

I can somewhat see it. But he had to know that it would rub people the wrong way. We all know people die everyday but gun laws being what they are makes these like this even sadder.

We have enough things trying to kill us or possible ways of dying as is. He could've did some snarky tweet about how ridiculous gun control is but he chose this instead.

Isn't that essentially what he's getting at with his tweet?

People are "hyperfocused with sensitivity right now" because actual people, not numbers, died in two horrible tragedies less than 24 hours ago. How about being a decent Human and letting people grieve and bury their loved ones first before getting Twitter hot takes off?

Carl Sagan is turning in his grave.

Also to everyone in this thread defending Neil: Stop. His job is to communicate. Whatever galaxy brain interpretation you think he *really* meant, he utterly failed at explaining and communicating it in an intelligent, rational way.

Medical errors are mistakes.
Car accidents are accidents.
The flu is a disease.
Number 1 way of suicide? Guns. 1/2 of all suicide.

Guns are the only weapon on the list.

I'll admit I don't use the Twitter much, but boy oh boy is that a dumb tweet. Come on man.

2 mass shootings in less than 24 hours. Let's make a what about list. Brutal.

In the medical field there is a constant push to identify and prevent medical errors. Every year there is a big push to get the flu vaccine. Car manufacturers are constantly developing new technologies to help prevent accidents (drive assist features) and make the car safer should you get in an accident (crumple zones, etc.). Mental health has been a big topic within the medical community as well.

Gun violence though? We are doing fuck all about it.

If he wanted to say that, he should have. Not "you know, these people dying actually isn't that bad in the grand scheme of things"
He's actually saying the opposite, he's saying it's really bad. He mentioned that the event is horrific, which it is. By making the point that there are equally horrific things that don't receive public outrage he really shouldn't be diminishing the 'horrificness' of the current event in anyone's eyes.

That'd only be the case if you think that people dying in more 'regular' ways like homocide isn't that bad.

He's also talking out his ass about medical errors. Probably should just shut the fuck up if he can't manage a tweet that conveys whatever he's trying to say accurately.

He get's his point across pretty clearly. These mass shootings change nothing, the problem is systemic. It's not that the mass shootings are 'not bad in the grand scheme of things', it's that the grand scheme of things itself is fucked for so many people and yet there's no impetus for change.
