Lots of good ones in here. I tend to gravitate toward sad and depressing music, it just speaks to me in a way that nothing else does. I wonder what that says about me, haha.

Yep, pretty much anything Elliott Smith is my depressed music of choice. Any album really, but especially Either/Or for me.
Also listen to a lot of shoegaze when I'm depressed. I've probably been near tears listening to Slowdive's Souvlaki a few times now.

Glad you like it! It's one of my favourite albums - great folk songs with a rich classical sound.
Oh, and to highlight a distressingly overlooked band:

Really, anything by Jenna Champion (of Clarissa's Wierd fame) hits like a punch to the gut.

The Great Cold Distance is top-tier Katatonia for me.
Front to back it's loaded with very catchy, but dark guitar work, melancholic but powerful vocals, complex and hard drumming, etc. Love it. The album cover is well fitting, it's a very atmospheric experience.
Pretty much the definition of depression. You can hear the pain in Layne Staley's voice. RIP. Alice in Chain has to be my favorite band of all time.

I like the way the sound progresses from a cello(?) intro to a harsh staccato harpsichord accompanying the vocals to a wind(flute?) outro. Not sure if it would be considered minimalist but it seems close. It makes effective use of it's duration. Makes me think of Durer's Melancholia

This song broke me. Most depressing song I've ever heard. I've never had to sit in silence for a few solid minutes after hearing a song before.
