Caro says she was drawn to the Mulan project because of thematic similarities to her 2002 breakthrough film The Whale Rider — which follows a twelve-year-old Māori girl whose ambition is to become the chief of her traditionally male-lead tribe — as well as a burning desire to "play in the big sandpit" of a Disney tentpole production. With an estimated budget of $290 million to $300 million, Mulan was the most expensive film shot by Disney last year.
Most expensive Disney film shot in 2018.

Disney has a $6b budget every year for their movies, it's normal for them.

They are betting on China for this one.

Are they filming and doing post in China? That money could go a looooong way if they do. Plus invisible money from patrons if they Chinese it up enough. That story is still mad popular.

Whoever is responsible for approving budgets at Disney's live action division needed to be fired years ago.

Location shooting is not cheap. Especially with "period" stuff. Look at the budget for game of thrones, and they mostly hung out in old castles

I do think they are filming in China, maybe Mongolia as well.
And yes, they probably got money from China to promote even more the movie.
Won't be surprised if the vast majority of the earnings are coming from China tho.

For reference this is probably a larger budget than every Marvel movie Disney has made aside from Endgame ($350m). Most of them don't have their budgets on Box Office Mojo, but this is larger than any of the previous Avengers movies and presumably any of the individual ones as well. This is larger than any of the Star Wars movies aside from The Last Jedi

This is MASSIVE

This feels idiotic. How does a Mulan movie need a budget of $290 million?

Sets costumes special effects vast real actor armies, spectacle, stunts, explosions and possibly dragons.

Adjusted for labor and craft costs in China and making basic assumptions about ten cent and govt involvement and so on this might be a billion dollar budget worth of content.

Mulan was the one I thought would bomb because there have been so many live action Disney flicks. But I did not consider that China could be a larger market for it.

Insane that Ultron had a bigger budget than Endgame. Doubly insane that Stranger Tides was that high, but it looked pretty I suppose.

No idea if this is accurate, but if it is, sort of crazy that 8 of the top ten are Disney movies.

I mean, Pirates were really big productions. Location shooting, ship and water logistics, and big special effects -- both practical and CG. I recall there being production issues too because of hurricanes that damaged entire sets.

I also remember reading somewhere that the snack/food budget alone was 2 million USD for Pirates 2 and 3, since the crew was so huge.

Everything will work out, unless the movie does something truly heinous that the Chinese government could never forgive, like showing openly gay characters being gay and also doing normal people stuff, as though they are normal and gay.

Ultron literally cut a large city out of the ground (I believe it was called Jabronia) and lifted it up with a thousand helicopters. That can't have been cheap.

I think Pirates shot two movies back to back and the budget reflected some of that, but yeah that was a crazy "Johnny Depp can do no wrong" time

Mulan at $300m is nuts, if the movie is not allowed to be released in China for some reason it would almost be a guaranteed loss
