And I don't know if that will change until BotW2!

Breath of the Wild looks great in screenshots but even then, compared to actually playing it they do not do it justice!

Finally began a serious replay of BotW (as I'm also LTTP on the DLC) and it is still one of the best (looking) games ever. While its ground textures in the overworld are lacking, the lightning and its delicate amalgamation of graphical effects interplaying with assets like the blades of grass are still unmatched on the Switch and make up for that deficit in spades.

Super Mario Odyssey also looks great but obviously has to make sacrifices to reach a locked 60FPS. Mario + Rabbids and soon Luigi's Mansion 3 are the only real challengers in my eyes but that's down to opinion.

Also,

That's not Xenoblade 2.

Edit: Actually, nvm - completely agree with the few in this thread who are saying Mario + Rabbids, forgot how great that game looks.

I think Octopath Traveler may be even prettier than Breath of the Wild, but admittedly that's a bit of an apples-and-oranges type scenario.

I completely disagree. Super Mario Odyssey trumps Breath of the Wild for me, but Octopath Traveler looks amazing too though obviously isn't as "technically" impressive as BOTW or Mario.

Edit: heck Mario Kart is fucking nuts but I guess the scope and scale makes it hard to compare.

It's probably my favourite artstyle of all time. There are of course compromises made from being a Wii U game but the end result is absolutely stunning

Also good opportunity to share this fanart which captures the vibe beautifully

It looks really, really great but titles like Doom 2016 or the recently released Port of Vansihing of Ethan Carter are looking more impressive imo, even though they are not Open World games.

Lol no. Yes it has good art direction and beautiful assets, but they're all hidden behind the overall trash IQ.

I don't think BOTW's IQ is all that great either, it feels really muddy and the colors are too washed out for my liking. It's not even as pretty as the previous game in the series.

Even though they do have completely different art styles, I think you can better compare them if you only look at the degree to which the games actualized their respective direction. In other words, which game achieved more of what it set out to accomplish?

To me, BOTW looks great as it is, but there's definitely more room for improvement there than in Octopath Traveler.

It's good, but the fact the weather is so foggy all the time is a big downer on the vistas. Like, sometimes it looks great albeit a bit blurry, but then it spends so much time being rainy or nighttime and all the vistas look like a smeared mess.

Hopefully not being tied to the Wii U helps it out?

Best looking, but that's reductionist, it's the entire cohesion of the sound/look/feel that really sells the game. On it's own the looks only take it so far.

Yeah, not just about the look but also the physics, I don't think any game on Switch is comparable. Some times I don't understand why do they have to downgrade games such as YS VIII and Bloodstained when they could run just the same as PS4/XONE

It's probably still the best looking, sure, but there are some serious challengers:

ARMS
Super Mario Odyssey
Mario + Rabbids: Kingdom Battle
Octopath Traveler
Astral Chain
The Legend of Zelda: Link's Awakening
Luigi's Mansion 3

I can't wait to see what Bayonetta 3 and Metroid Prime 4 look like!

I wish it had more color saturation to it.

Anyway, it's about to lose the crown to Luigi's Mansion 3 in a few months. Someone post some pics

ARMS, Astral Chain and Luigi's Mansion 3 look way better graphically imo, though that's not to take away anything from BOTW's gorgeous art style.

well it is nintendo's biggest production ever (or as of yet). it's not going to "age" in just a few years

This is probably the effect of finally having a PS4 (Pro) within the last year but I recently noticed that BotW (and Xenoblade Chronicles 2 for that matter) seem a lot rougher than I remember them. Mario Odyssey looks better to my eyes although BotW is still the overall prettiest art style.

Art wise I don't really disagree. But good art doesn't age as quickly as technology.

Seconded.

Thought this was about MK8 first.

MK8 still looks great but it's not really in contention imo. Most of the modern Switch games look better than MK8 and BOTW.

That's not Xenoblade 2.

Docked XC2 looks pretty good, lot more modern rendering techniques in it compared to BOTW. It's handheld resolution is poor though. Definitely wanna see whatever Monolith's next game is approach 900p docked, 600p handheld.

This game on handheld is still staggering to me.

This and Super Mario Odyssey are like, "I can't believe this exists in this form" when I see them specifically in handheld.

Link's Awakening looks stunning though, and the sound design seems incredible.

BotW does nail the feel of some of its environments, though I can't be sure how much of that is due to the gameplay mechanics. The sense of scale and climate in some areas is incredible, but I wonder if I felt that because I'd internalized how much effort it would take to manage stamina and temperature to traverse them.

Honestly thought your thread was gonna be about Color Splash

EDIT: I misread the topic as what Wii U title you believed is better looking than any Switch game teehee

I think Octopath looks gorgeous in screenshots, but I really didn't like the whole depth of field/tilt shift thing when it was actually in motion.

Playing through it for the first time right now. 4k60 on my OLED via CEMU. So beautiful!
