And what if they are legally not allowed to?

Obviously there would be exceptions if the game had something egregious like child porn but if it's a matter of some licence expiring, then it should still be available. Physical copies of GTAIV aren't illegal to sell much less own despite having music from expired licences.

It would be absurd if this was the game, of all Telltale's games, that wasn't available for download. It has to be a misunderstanding or at the very least something that will be remedied by Microsoft.

It should be on the storefront side, something that is part of the agreement to sell the game in the first place. As long as the storefront is active, they should be forced to host the game that was ever purchasable even if the developer/publisher goes under. It doesn't even need to be necessarily playable say if there are Windows patches that break compatibility but they should still offer the game for download.

I understand that part, but who do they send the direct deposit to when they sell it?

A contractual obligation would be a legal reason that a store front isn't allowed to continue to host it. Plenty of delisted games still remain available to redownload after a company has gone under. If this one gets removed, there is clearly a legal contractual obligation that would prevent a store front to continue to host it even after it is delisted.

Every time something like this happens (which is bad, sure) a group of people comes out with the exact same comment, pretending like there are no benefits to digital games at all and this negative aspect is all there is.

Yes, digital future is good, for many reasons. This one particular thing sucks.

That's because a lot of people are called old men yelling at the cloud for not embracing the all digital future. This is just justification as to why some people don't want to embrace the all digital future.

I'm saying the original agreement to sell the game should have a stipulation to host the game in perpetuity that supersedes any contractual obligations. If that takes government regulation, then so be it.

as someone who owns plenty of digital games - the digital future sucks. really worried about what it's gonna be like in 10-20 years when I'm like "I wanna go back and play this old digital only game on X platform.... oh.... i can't. I even 'own it' and I can't...."

It won't happen, even if you think it will. In 10-20 years you'll probably be subscribed to some gaming service and you'll have remasters of these games, but you will not want to play them, except maybe that one game.

Let me be clear, I'm not saying this is great or anything, I'm not glad because of it - but I doubt your game enjoyment will be diminished in 10 or 20 years (unless you get bored with games or something). It will be different, sure, the model will change, but there are some benefits of whatever is coming to replace physical games.

Not exactly the same thing, but - for example - the upcoming Apple Arcade is designed to allow premium games with no f2p elements to survive. The downside is - you won't own these games. The benefit is - a lot more of these games will be made.

And also: who can guarantee that, in 20 years, your physical discs would even work?

Of all the positives I believe digital gaming brings, this is one crippling negative that will always linger.

So if you own either season of Minecraft: Story Mode on Microsoft Windows, macOS, PlayStation 3, PlayStation 4, PlayStation Vita, Wii U, Nintendo Switch, Xbox 360, Xbox One, Android, or iOS, you have until June 25th, 2019 to download the episodes. We'd recommend checking you have all the episodes downloaded!

When did it come to Vita?

Someone correct me if I'm wrong, but the following games have versions with everything on it.

Minecraft Story Mode Complete Adventure Season 1 (PS4, XBO, S)
Minecraft Story Mode Season 2 (S)
The Wolf Among Us (PS4, XBO)
Tales from the Borderlands (PS4, XBO)
Batman Telltale Series Season 1 (S)
Walking Dead Season 1, 400 Days (PS4, XBO)
Walking Dead Season 2 (PS4, XBO)
Walking Dead Collection (Season 1, 400 Days, Season 2, New Frontier, Michonne) (PS4, XBO)
Back to the Future (PS4, XBO)

The following are partial:

Batman Telltale Series Seaosn 1 (PS4, XBO) - First episode only
Batman Telltale Series Season 2 The Enemy Within (PS4, XBO) - First episode only
Game of Thrones (PS4, XBO) - Episodes 1-5 on disc, 6th is download only
Walking Dead New Frontier (PS4, XBO) - First episode only
Walking Dead Final Season (PS4, XBO) - Episodes 1-3 on disc, 4th is download only
Walking Dead Final Season (S) - Episode 1 only on cart
Guardians of the Galaxy (PS4, XBO) - First episode only
Minecraft Story Mode Season 2 (PS4, XBO) - First episode only

Not to be a wise guy, but a lot of those games came to X360 and PS3. Plus, the first Minecraft SM made it to Wii U somehow. I'm not sure which piles those version should belong to.

This really brings me down. A lot of folks shit on them, but the MSM series was actually one of Telltales better games. Of course, the first WD and TFTB are higher on the list, but still not bad overall. Probably taught me more about MInecraft than the real game, and the second game has one of my favorite endings of all the telltale stuff (it felt like I had the most control out of all the games).

I kept it to just the modern consoles since they'll likely perform better and will be playable on the next gen consoles. No reason to go with X360, PS3, or even Wii U if you have anything current.

Good point. I was thinking more like the achievement/trophy whores like myself, where these would be lost forever.

*groans* but I really, really don't want to play GoT again...

Anyone know why we can't purchase season 2 of Story Mode (US PSN here)? Or did Telltale mean only those who purchased it prior can download it :(?

Lmao, what a shit show.

We're gonna have to rely on archived YouTube let's play videos if any of us feel like reliving these games in ten years or something.

Indeed! That legitimately seems like the only way to affordably go through these experiences in the future. It's unfortunate that once something is delisted it's likely gone for good.

Again, the specific wording Telltale used was
"If you have purchased these seasons, please download all remaining episodes prior to the service being discontinued in June."

It's absolutely possible this was written by someone who doesn't know the specifics of games getting delisted, but the wording is quite precise.

Very strange because I'm still unable to download episode 3 of season one despite owning the season pass :(

But I can still download it on PSN if I own it I think. And if I understand Minecraft won't be downloadable even if purchased right?

That's the problem I'm getting - despite purchasing season one of Minecraft Story Mode a long time back, episode 3 is not downloadable for me on my PS4 (US store).

I was just able to download episode 3 of season 1 to my PS4 via the download list. It's just like Game of Thrones was.

Did you download it sometime before though and delete it? My issue is I purchased the season pass a long time back and never downloaded any episodes back then. The odd thing is - I was able to download every other episode except for episode 3.

I'm speaking from a perspective of it doesn't matter because it is still the better option in the end. If the servers are up, great, you get the patches, if they go down, well physical wins out over digital in this case. It's better to have a game in hand than no game at all.
It's a vaguely better option that already has some of the same problems digital does thanks to how distribution goes nowadays. It's not a solution or and end all alternative, and that is a problem.

The vast majority of us who prefer digital never said it will be perfect. Of all the digital games I bought last gen I think they can still all be downloaded. Of all the discs I bought last gen and the gen before not many still work.

They both have their pros and cons and if it goes all digital it will be because the consumers voted with their wallet.

I still think this wording means "If you've purchased the season pass, make sure you've downloaded and "Purchased" the episodes too because if not you won't be able to redownload them".

This. I still can download J-Stars Victory Vs on PS3 (but probably never will because it's so awful)

Cant download it even if you own it? Is that even legal
We don't know.

We're not sure.

If the publisher has gone bust and is no longer paying the storefront owner, should the storefront still host the publisher's game on their servers?

Or

If the publisher breaks their part of the contract with the storefront then should the storefront still host the publisher's game on their servers?

What is the (S)? PC full game on disc for steam?

Pardon my ignorance.

How is that possible..did you use them as frisbee to play with your dog?

Depending on the quality of the manufacturing process CDs can have a relatively short lifespan. Anyway every CD degenerates over time, even if you don't use them. The longevity depends on many factors, like manufacturing process, how you store them, and environmental influences.

Anyway buying physical is obviously not the answer for the "I want to play a game I bought today in 20 years too" people.

Most games these days are only shallow experiences without day one patches (or several patches) or won't even start at all if some servers went down.

So this is why the "this is why I buy only physical" post are equally hilarious, sad and delusional.

Y'all are dogpiling the dude with crazy things like frisbee practice and did you use the disk as a a test dart board, but I kinda get where the poster is coming from. Hell I've bought brand new games on release day that didn't work because of a scratch or somehow wasn't pressed right, and they were rightfully replaced with working copies. 10 or fifteen years though after release and maybe the disk has some scratches and won't play anymore, I don't know many companies out there that will just give you another copy to play. And don't jump on me, I can't do digital because I have hughesnet, satellite internet, my data allowance would run out with one update sekiro. There's a future for both physicaland digital, but let's not pretend that this extremely delicate disks can get scratched pretty easily!
I am not dogpiling, I am genuinely baffled. I own a bunch of 20 years old discs that run fine, if someone says that most of the last discs from last gen are borked, either that is the standard now and I somehow never saw people commenting or the poster is super unlucky and an exception.

Blu Rays are a lot less likely to breakor stop working from scratches than previous generations disc formats.

Plus I don't mean to suggest you aren't looking after your games but mine are all in perfect working order and so are most of my 360 games.

Heck my PSP games still work.

I have anger issues when gaming so one time actually yes!

I was referring to pre ps3 gen so ps2 and ps1 discs. Most broke.

The biggest problem with the ps3 discs was losing them. So many games I knew I had but can no longer find.

Look digital isn't perfect but neither are discs. I just think it's sad this constant digital bashing every chance they get.

I can kinda understand when you talk about PSX games (hard to find them in great condition nowadays) but PS2 games... Nope, I have close to a hundred games and no problem till now :P

Discs are perfect as long as you can rip the games you own.

Have you tried downloading the episode from the in-game episode download option? You could also try restoring the licenses for your psn-account and another measure that might help is deactivating your PS4 as primary and setting it back as primary console right after.

Laws have to be updated so that companies have to support digital content that you bought or you get a refund or the media is released free of copyright protection. This digital future is scary without some regulation.

Once upon a time, at least, Steam had a not-terribly-well-known feature that allows you to back up your own downloaded software in the event that you wish to reinstall something but have no internet; basically allows a burnt DVD to act as the Steam server for the purposes of installing.

I've no idea if that feature still exists and has been maintained, and I've also no idea if it'd actually work in this context. But... maybe?

It still exists. And hypothetically it should work, unless license was revoked. But I still don't believe they'd remove access to files, that makes little sense.
(Apparently on consoles you have to download DLC at least once, so it could be related to that - but the way it's written doesn't correspond to that).

And I get ridiculed for being skeptical that a "digital" future is a good thing. Glad any telltale game I bought is on a physical card. And this is why I prefer physical.
