Adapting ahead of regulation: a principled approach to app stores - Microsoft On the Issues

Today we’re announcing a new set of Open App Store Principles that will apply to the Microsoft Store on Windows and to the next-generation marketplaces we will build for games, in part to address Microsoft’s growing role and responsibility as we seek regulatory approval for our acquisition of...

The openness principles are posted here. With this interesting tidbit:
FLKy7ECXIAM2RTt.png

"The principles respond to concerns raised by app developers and lawmakers, who say app stores run by Apple Inc. and others take an unfairly large cut of digital revenues and stifle competition. Microsoft said it wouldn't require developers to use a proprietary payment system, among other steps.

"We are more focused on adapting to regulation than fighting against it," said company president Brad Smith. He and CEO Satya Nadella met with reporters Wednesday ahead of meetings with lawmakers and others about the Activison deal.

The principles would also help Microsoft offer its new gaming store on devices where it can't today, executives told reporters Wednesday. Apple's iPhone, for example, doesn't allow competing app stores, a step the company says helps it to protect users' security and privacy."

They've been promising a lot with their App store, especially with Windows, for years and not a whole lot has come from it.

And it's being pretty vague about it too.

MS wants to have CoD on PS after agreements end aka we want GP on everything

Whoa, that seems like a pretty transparent statement? Especially the third sentence.

Seems Activision/Blizzard games will continue to be released on PlayStation (and Nintendo) platforms beyond existing agreements.

Edit: Beaten!

Seems pretty cut and dry. I imagine most new IPs will be Xbox exclusive though. They only mentioned Call of Duty and "other popular Activision Blizzard titles", so like Overwatch I guess?

Smart move. Microsoft would be idiotic to lock IP like Crash and Spyro to their ecosystem, where they have historically sold the least.

Hopefully we'll see Crash and Spyro on Playstation and Nintendo in the future.

Good news.

Perhaps resident warriors can take time to cope and realize that they are wasting their time and energy trying to battle for exclusivity. It doesn't help them as an individual one bit.

This doesn't sound too different than anything they have been saying. "through the term of any existing agreement with Activision' is the main phrase there. They have held up existing agreements with every company they have bought so far.

I saw Atrioc give the view that yeah, with destiny 2 being a huge cross-platform series and all, sonys best bet is to buy up a few key players and make a narrative that it's MS's fault if cross platform dies (since MS can win the buying war lazily), not even wrong I think. Hopefully we all keep getting multiplat releases period.

Well then. Very interesting. The lines are very confusing. I mean, all Bethesda games will be exclusive, but not ATVI? Makes sense but yeah, very hard to keep track of.

They mentioned existing agreements before but I believe this's the first time they mentioned after the existing agreements, right?
Not sure if this's just to get the approval for the acquisition then backtrack, but didn't expect them to make a definitive statement like this.

"And we have committed to Sony that we will also make them available on PlayStation beyond the existing agreement and into the future..."

Seems pretty cut and dry that they intend to keep releasing on PS

This still doesn't read as "we're pledging to release new games on Playstation after existing agreements expire" to me. It just sounds like "don't worry, we're not gonna turn off the servers for Warzone/etc once the agreement is over".

Nobody has said unequivocally that they will keep releasing new games on PS into the future. They're doing classic doublespeak to make it sound like they're saying one thing when really they're saying something else.

Just say ALL.

Existing Agreements doesn't even need to be in there.

They keep on saying multiple things for a reason. I wish they would just say what it is. GAAS will be multiplatorm. Tell people if it's just gaas.

"Also beyond the existing agreement"

Or has that been in black and white as well? Can't remember that.

Well it's good though :D

The CoD statement is really interesting. All their other statements until now were really weaselly, where you could clearly see the language that wasn't saying anything definite. Now they're being explicit with wanting CoD on Playstation.

For some people, the part that says they have committed to Sony that they will also continue to put Call of Duty beyond existing agreements, is a clearer definition. A lot of people have said they wouldn't.

Sony should pay MS to update their online store and offer smart delivery too.

Jimbo: "Hi Phil you can keep playing Destiny 2 and other Bungie games on Xbox"

Phil: "Thanks Jimbo, you can keep playing ATVI games on playstation after we finish the deal"

It says and beyond as well. How that happens obviously remains to be seen.

They are kinda opening up Pandora's box because now this is what people will expect.

Yeah, the difference now is that MS controls these franchises.

No more PlayStation exclusive DLC and marketing for CoD for example. No PlayStation timed exclusivity for Crash or whatever. No risk of losing Activision to an Amazon acquisition etc.

And the games day one on Game Pass.

Could compare it to Disney. They sell their content anywhere and everywhere, but there's only one subscription service that has Disney content.
We will also make them available beyond the existing agreement.....through gamepass...... ;)
At the bare minimum I expect some kind of XBL integration.

Like some of us said....just wait to see how all this plays out....Its still early days but....nothing hasnt even happened yet as far as their acquisitions.

Google also had to rethink/redo some things after they bought Motorola.
MS had to redo how it included Internet Explorer (and other browsers) in Windows.

The next sentence says that cod games after those terms expire will also be available.

"Beginning today, we will move forward to apply Principles 1 through 7 to the store on the Xbox console [the nothingburger please pat me on the back principles]. We're committed to closing the gap on the remaining principles over time.....Emerging legislation is not being written for specialized computing devices, like gaming consoles, for good reasons. Gaming consoles, specifically, are sold to gamers at a loss to establish a robust and viable ecosystem for game developers. The costs are recovered later through revenue earned in the dedicated console store."

openness for thee but not for me

Again... How? Through streaming? lol.

Or are they going to build PS5/PS6 and Nintendo Ports of every Activision GamePass title while developing their Xbox and PC versions.

Hint- no.
