Office has some of his songs playing on repeat today, productivity gonna go to shit, lol

So many timeless classics~~~

Listen to The Weeknd's cover of DD.

It's absolutely brilliant.

I'll have to check it out. My favorite of his is 'give in to me' very 90s rock. I love it

Good reminder what perpetual use of pain killers and sleep meds will eventually do to you. Always wondered how different he would have been if his hair had not caught fire

From what I read this was a big part of his downfall (the trials as well). I think history would have went differently if that hadn't happened

....you seem to be unaware of the story I'm talking about where a mod of this community literally went to bat for a pediphile (like many are here) and legitimately turned out to be one.

I'm aware of that.

What I'm disagreeing with you on is that I don't think all defenders are pedophiles. Bringing up that story in response to someone saying they believe he was innocent with the implication being that the poster is a pedophile is not ok.

yeah no, I can't celebrate this trash person, no matter what i think about his music, fuck him.

[Mod Edit] Cross-forum drama removed

GAF is not this community, you can't say that guy was a mod of this community . the average poster didn't even know that until shit hit the fan, the only at blame to cover him is also exactly the one that made everyone left the site. If that happened here in Era I doubt anyone would have covered his ass like that person did.

After watching the HBO documentary and the Oprah special, I can no longer stand to listen to his music I can only think of him as a complete monster. When I think about him, the disgust overpowers any previous positive memories of his music.

His death is a positive in the sense that he can no longer harm children, however it's a great shame that true justice couldn't be served while he was alive.

Heal the World is closely associated with my childhood. Hard to untangle it all

His music is amazing. What he did to kids, well he will have to answer for them if there is a higher being.

Got mad love for Mike and his music. I cried when he died. Like Pac, and John Ritter all three passing made me shed a tear. Most recently Nip, had me shook to.

He was a monster and a good musician. Personally speaking though, I would take Janet Jackson's Rhythm Nation 1814, Control, or The Velvet Rope over his albums.

reading through this thread just makes me sad. ppl will obliviously overlook anything it seems. music should be completely tertiary to everything else imo. how can you enjoy and delude yourself in the face of everything. not a good look.

What's that about his hair catching fire? I remember when it happened but I didn't know it had an effect on him long-term.

This is the one with the slash guitar solo, right? Dangerous is such a great album.
Like others I have no problem separating art from artist, so I can still enjoy tracks of his that I really like, of which there are many.

This is where his addiction to painkillers/meds all started. Slippery slope from that point onwards really.

FWIW I absolutely think he's guilty of most of the things he's accused off, even if some of the details don' add up or whatever. But I believe the victims.

However, how are these any different to hit and run comments about him being a peadophile? Either way, doesn't seem like theres much actual discussion happening here.

PS Dirty Diana is objectively his best song. You're wrong if you think otherwise.

"Dirty Diana" always used to be my favorite song but "Streetwalker" may have overtaken that.

"Stranger in Moscow" and "They Don't Care About Us" are up there for me as well.

If you dont want to get side eyed like a pedophile maybe dont come onto a public message board and go to the defense of a pedophile. I personally dont fucking care if you or anyone else likes it. Even the fucking alt right have enough dignity to drop one of their idols when it comes to them being outed for awful defenses of pedophilia, and in that case he didnt even commit it.

Thats true. But we are a community that was born from that one which is why I said this community.

Yeah, I was just looking this up a few days ago and was trying to think of how long it had been and it seemed a lot longer than that for some reason. This was after watching the freedie mercury movie though

It's very dangerous to assume that anyone who would still listen to his music knowing his personal behavior is also a pedophile.

I feel like Quincy Jones helped to moderate some of his musical urges. Like some of the riffs on Dangerous go on a while and probably could have been cut down. Black or White is a good example of the guitar part after the intro probably going on a little too long before the lyrics start.

I remember I was a Barber shop waiting for a hair cut when a patron told be about the news. At the time, I was shocked and sad of the news.

I still have his classics like Thriller, BAD and Billie Jean on my MP3 player but I'm done with him after the HBO doc.

And I never said anything of the sort. Theres a difference between listening to his music, and coming onto a message board, downplaying the evidence, making drive by posts and talking about what a great human being he is. For virtually anything on this board we dont tolerate discussion on people that have sordid histories that aren't even one tenth of the evil this man committed. We dont talk about Colin Moriarty here, we dont talk about Boogie or laymen gaming here (all good things that I agree dont deserve a platform). But a fucking pedophile is allowed to have threads where we continuously defend and downplay his actions and dismiss evidence is totally cool because he had catchy songs and could dance well? Its ridiculous hypocrisy

Easily the greatest performer of my lifetime and perhaps best performer there will ever be.

I remember waking up and hearing on the news he was being rushed to hospital. Then the shock when it was announced that he died.

It still didn't sink in that it really happened even though radio stations and music channels suddenly became 24/7 MJ playlists.

Understandable, and I'm sorry I took your comment out of context.

You raise valid points, I think the hard part for people to detangle is that MJ has a much, much larger footprint on our culture than the people you mentioned.

My thoughts go to the victims of his abuse who have to live their lives with what he did to them. At least he can't hurt anybody anymore.

What a strange day that was. Billy Mays, Farrah Fawcett, and then Michael Jackson passed that same day. I still remember being on the interwebs that day and whenever news was breaking about MJ, the Internet kind of crashed. I remember google and AIM(lol aim) went down temporarily

Still remember where I was and everything when the news broke of his death. It's absolutely wild to remember just how ingrained he was to all sorts of pop culture.

Disney, video games, sports, comics, film...The Simpsons.

Him being a disgusting pedo cunt ruined his music for me. Others are obviously welcome to enjoy it but I just can't.

I personally can't separate the art from the artist even with small things like Donald Glover being an arrogant jerk. I can't comprehend being able to do it with something like this.

Yeah, I'd agree. I wish they had reunited for invincible because there's a lot of great content there, but it's overly long and and needed more soul and funk. Quincy had a great ear for him

Haven't listened to any of his output since the HBO documentary. I'm sure I'll return to it eventually, but for now it really soured me on it.

Man, I still remember one of the jokes that went around my school playground at the time.

What do the PlayStation and Michael Jackson have in common?

They're both made out of plastic and get turned on by children

I love his music so so much. It's perfect and completely out of this world to me. it's like it syncs me with something metaphysical, and I am not a very spiritual person.

But nevertheless, its absolutely tainted now. its unfortunate but its really only his fault. Man, I even dont know if its still apropriate to play some songs at my wedding later this summer.

I still have not seen this HBO doc -- and tbh I'm not sure how much I could stomach watching four hours of accounts of child molestation -- but the turnaround on MJ this year has struck me as really strange, given that the accusations against him have been around for nearly my entire life. Maybe the doc has some damning new evidence that nobody had heard/seen before, but to me the basic underlying charge of "Michael Jackson sexually abused boys at his Neverland ranch" has been basically baked into my perception of him for decades already and it didn't strike me as anything new, so it was weird that it seemed like a lot of other people were shocked or went "ok, can't listen to his music anymore now."

I guess it depends. If he was gifted it and just kept it, it's not a problem. I can't remember if he bought it himself. He had a massive library and was an art collector though. If you look at it from a common pov I can get it, but there's a lot of art where the nude body is shown in a way to highlight some aesthetic ideal. The issue here is that if we govern what is obscene, you fall down on a slippery slope. This is a big deal in the art world actually (I remember taking a law class about it).

Still, I get what you mean, but there are different perspectives to it
As far as mental gymnastics go, "if he was gifted child pornography and kept it, well that's not a problem" really takes the cake.
