I played the Windows version ahead of today's launch for an Ars Technica article:

And, yeah, it's a blast, so long as you know what you're in for. In terms of PC performance: stable 60fps, locked to vsync, with some sound-level issues in a few cut scenes but no particularly galling glitches. It's as janky as the 2004 original, but not in a Goat Simulator glitching-hilariously way, nor in a painful, "die because of glitches" way. The PC version includes full rebinding options for m+kb but little in the way of graphics options. I'm unsure about how it handles any screen ratio other than 16:9.

I can't speak to the console versions.
unless review code is a bit different(maybe beta?), or something happened with the launch version, it's locked at 30 for everyone else.

I really shouldn't buy this, but I desperately want it. We've got 2 weeks until the physical release, so I might change my mind. But good lord do I want to own this stupid game.

how did you get it to run at 60? there aren't any v-sync settings or anything. i'm running on a g-sync monitor.

it's not a review build thing — i wrote the verge review linked above that said it was locked to 30, so would like to update if there's a solution. i figured it was just xbox-era fixed game logic.

The devs confirmed a while ago that it's 30FPS on all platforms so im guessing that was a mistake on the reviewers part.

Is it just me or does the lighting look worse than the original release? What happened to the shadows and specular highlights?

Also I know you can't ask Canada for help but at least give us a physical release here.
The 5.5 from IGN has me nervous about picking this up. Might wait for a sale.
Not that you should put your trust in arbitrary numbers anyway, but IGN gave Godhand a 3/10, Deadly Premonition a 2/10, and Prey a 4/10. Read what they wrote, then judge with your own eyes.

Im shocked the game has Ultrawide support! its been a really fun nostalgia trip so far, Its funnier than I recall too. I miss these sort of arcade-style mech games.

well, whaddya know. I based my perception of the frame rate off of feel, as opposed to running benchmarks, but after testing in both FRAPS and RTSS, yep, it's locked to 30fps. (I didn't include an fps count in my article and simply offered my assumption here since the thread didn't have any linked reviews at the time.)

I apologize for getting that wrong, ResetERA. maybe it boils down to the engine keeping a locked 30fps, as opposed to serving up frame time spikes, mixed with the game's decidedly last-gen look, that tripped me up? after doing this MWCXD test, I went back and did a test of Forza Horizon 4, going back and forth between 60fps and 30fps, to make sure I hadn't gone insane and stopped perceiving a difference between the two. (I have, indeed, not gone insane.)

I was playing on Xbox One earlier and all of the cutscenes had delayed sound. Like something would happen on screen, and then you would hear the sound effects a second or two later.

What a rip off.

25$ for a 15 year old game that's locked at 30 fps on PC. Apperently it even has missing effects and other problems.

Yeah, the sound mix is a mess. Cutscenes are SUPER LOUD, in-game dialogue not so much.

That said, I had more fun than I expected to. This is super jank PS2 city, and it's kind of nostalgic.

However, despite all of this, this new XD port is a bit off in some unfortunate ways. The first issue is that the sound levels between voiceover, sound effects and music are all over the place. I checked the original Xbox game and this is definitely a new issue. So you often have sound effects drowning out the music and the dialogue and some of the music tracks don't seem to play properly (this issue is also very obvious in the above and below videos of me plaything through the game). Following that, the original Xbox game used a fair amount of bloom on the lighting and explosions, which helped give the combat more impact. In this new port though, the bloom and other effects are gone and it looks quite flat in places as a result.

Did From have multiple teams back then? Because even though I'm liking this game, it's hard for me to believe that these were the same people that made Another Century's Episode.

I'm pretty sure they did, they were still doing multiple games back then. They had their dark fantasy team(King's Field) and their MECHA ACTION team, kind of like they did in the PS3 era.

This game is such good fun. Really does take me back to classic From from the PS2 days. This is the closest they've ever gotten to crafting an arcade experience. I miss these kind of games.

They had a lot of overlap between teams, the lead designer of this ended up being Miyazaki's lead game designer on his games and this team also made Ninja Blade and Armored Core as well as also a lot of them ending up on their current array of games like Sekiro and Bloodborne. Their old games just had a lot of variety that's missing nowadays but the quality of their games has improved.

What's the difficulty like? Always a bit wary of gen 6 games I haven't played as they weren't always accessible, plus this is by From. Any options?

I am having a good laugh from the game's dialog and cutscenes. Blowing up America in the name of its liberty is my kinda America game to play :V

Preordered the physical version from Gamestop this morning and noticed it's been delayed until August 27th.

Did From have multiple teams back then? Because even though I'm liking this game, it's hard for me to believe that these were the same people that made Another Century's Episode.

They also made Murakamo for the Xbox back then.

Found this recent interview with Masenori Takeuchi about the original development of the game...

Though From Software was no stranger to mecha games at that point, interestingly enough, Metal Wolf Chaos didn't come out of the Armored Core team. As Takeuchi explained, the developers took notes.

"It was actually a different team from the Armored Core guys, but we did receive some advice from them about how to go about making a different kind of mecha game. A little bit more action-based, a little more arcadey. So we took some advice and some reference from them in order to see how we might make that happen. In terms of reaction, it was quite fun because people knew what sort of game it was becoming, but they had no idea about the protagonist or the crazy story. We think they were pleasantly surprised. It was a nice harmony between the two teams."

"At the time it was a team of 30 who made the original Metal Wolf Chaos in about 11 months, so it was very compact and short-term," he continued. "Nowadays you might have people who are more specialist –someone who does the animation, someone who does texture."

Yeah the railgun fully charged is a super cannon. OP!

When you lose a mission and you have to do the entire stage from the start, no checkpoints, just have to go straight through. Some of the missions can be pretty damn long too! It's so satisfying though when you complete them. Hope they get in fixing the sound issues soon. Game is fine for me otherwise.

When's the physical going up on Special Reserve Games? Does anyone know how long they took for other games usually?

So a fun fact, the studio that ported the game left the original xbox debug files, and if you copy the game right from steam it runs on Xbox.

If you use the debug files on a JP copy of the game the debug settings show up.

I'm willing to give them a pass on that stuff since the port was probably the resort of ritualistic sacrificial miracles.

And they're communicable, too.

I do find it funny the reviews are mostly fixated on the game itself and not the port quality, though.

Jesus, that twitter video. That's Silent Hill HD levels of bad when it comes to missing effects. Hopefully they'll patch accordingly.

So let me get this straight. A FromSoftware game has been ported to PC, the framerate is locked to 30fps, and graphics (and audio) are a mess...

...
Has Durante heard about this yet?

How many of the reviewers actually have personal hands on experience with the Xbox original?

Even in twitter video you can see that graphics is drastically downgraded in remaster

This looks super bad.

But now I finally get why I had the lingering feeling of something being way, way off with the remake. Metal Wolf Chaos' destruction was only second to Wreckless. It's a shame they botched it.
