So uh, Christmas just happened, remember that? Feels like 10 years ago already.

This Christmas, my family pooled together to get my dad his very own chromebook. The man is basically tech illiterate, only confident enough to browse the web and send emails. He isn't savvy enough to check sidebars or settings menus on websites like Youtube, which is where the topic of this post originates.

My dad is a conservative who "doesn't like" Trump, but voted for him twice. Thanks to the wretched nature of right-wing news this past year, he has been slowly dragged further to the right, consistently falling for the most obvious but "starter" conspiracies. The kind Fox News peddles, such as the recent BS suggesting that ANTIFA operatives may have been mixed into the Capitol hill insurrection, despite that obviously not being the case. This gullibility worries me, as he now has access to his very own youtube account with tailored recommendations not altered by family members also using the site.

So I decided to get down and dirty today in order to "fix" his recommendations. I've been looking for the most radical channels in his recommendations and asking youtube to stop suggesting those channels. I put a few breadtube videos in his watch history and am going to try watching some non-political videos, such as food channels and the like. But I could use some help.

Has anyone done something like this to the youtube recommendations of a family member? Any suggestions on channels to block or tactics to mess with my dad's recommendations? Also miss me with any takes suggesting that this is unethical. I don't want to hear it.

Redirect the Youtube link to his subscriptions video feed and load it up with subscribed channels of stuff you'd think he'd like to watch. Then when he clicks the Youtube link it'll take him to the subscriptions page with the feed of all those channels. I don't know how that would affect recommendations.

I don't think its unethical, certainly no more unethical than the algos themselves, but I do think your efforts will be in vain--I have a feeling they'll snap right back to right wing stuff if that's the kinda stuff he wants to see.

I've been saying this (or thinking) for a while... there needs to be an AdBlock type add on that can be secretly installed by sons/daughters to stop alt right posts/videos from showing on parents' Facebook and YouTube feed.

in addition to saying that youre not interested in those channels, just straight up subscribe him to some good stuff

This is like the plot of an episode of a Sitcom that could easily be solved by having an actual conversation with the person.

I set the parental controls on my parents' TV so they couldn't watch Fox News for a while. That helped.

Isn't it possible to have ignotito mode turned on permanently? I think you can in the android app. Obviously some drawbacks but if he's new to it then should be ok.
I got onto my brother's Hulu Plus account and filled his recommendations with anime if that counts.
When I was a teenager somebody got into my browser and filled it with porn.

I think a good outlet is to get good wholesome videos based on his hobbies. Like for example if he likes movies, a video on how it's made or trivia on his favorite movies.

When I was a teenager somebody got into my browser and filled it with porn.

I had the opposite of that happen in my early 20s, spent 6 months renting a room from my Aunt and Uncle, one day I had my pissed off Aunt come to me claiming I put porn on the laptop she and my uncle used and filled their search histories with searches for naked pictures of models and actresses that haven't been relevant for 20 years.

Currently doing this with cooking channels. Subscribing to hobby stuff might help diversify my Dad's reccs

Get him started on VTubers, that'll clear out your recommendations real fast.

Man, are there even any youtube conservatives that are not Trumpers? I'm thinking hooking your dad directly into Breadtube will just reject him.

The closest thing I can think of as a pipeline to convert conservatives are Destiny and Hasan, though each is totally different.

Just subscribe to a bunch of channels that have nothing to do with politics. If he truly is clueless he probably won't even know what being subscribed means, or how to unsubscribe.

Maybe something wholesome like dog (or his preferred animal) videos. They usually stick around for a while and are near endless.

Straight-up turning off watch and search history will go a long way to prevent his feed from clogging up with chuddy stuff

Of course, the flipside of this will be that he won't be getting any recommendations catered specifically to stuff he watches, so YMMV

Most people go to those weird videos because a friend shared them. So your dad is probably going to get a video from someone close to him and the algorithm is going to donits job again

He will be watching straight from the app right? If it was through a browser there are some extensions that could take care of the recommendations.

The important thing is that he isn't JUST being recommended radical political content, which was the case until I intervened today

Maybe just let him watch whatever he wants. He's an adult and it's got nothing to do with you.

Assuming he likes sports, maybe some sports channel could do the trick. Personally I like highlight videos and sport analysis, some youtubers put good effort to explain strategies, moves and such.

Not at all. Not a fan of trying to control someone's life and how they think, when they are more than capable of making their own decisions. If you have concerns, have a conversation.
Trying to keep a family member from falling down the alt right rabbit hole is just trying to keep them in the realm of reality lol. Would you let your parents become full blown Trumpers who go out and raid the capital?

If you actually think this is a reasonable course of action, then boy do I have a bridge to sell you

Your first response to this thread wasn't "have a conversation."

Your first response to this thread was "it's got nothing to do with you" on a topic about someone who doesn't want their dad falling down further into a deplorable hole of misinformation and hate.

Any particularly good ones?
What is his favorite sports? For Basketball, I sometimes watch BBallbreakdown, but he can be annoying. Recently I like to watch No Chill with Gilbert Arenas. I know he's nuts, but just purely in terms of Basketball, his insight is pretty good.

Simon Whistler has a bunch of good 'random facts and interesting stuff' channels that occasionally slip in 'Trump is dumb' jokes. Could be a subtle way to get him more lerned

Ok, my dad's feed has gone from creepy Thai dating videos and Alex Jones-lite lunacy to a nice healthy mix of cooking, movie reviews, "really makes you think" stuff, economic advice, politics, and sports. I left Fox News and Barstool up to let him have some right wing shit but got rid of all the truthtellereaglefuck.com garbage.
