That "it's ultimately way more expensive for all of us if we DON'T do it this way" argument actually has a chance to break through.

No, it really doesn't. It's ultimately way, way more expensive to administer healthcare the way we currently do than to do single payer, and yet we've been doing it this way forever and any suggestion to the contrary is met with hysterical cries about socialism.

America doesn't give one flying fuck how we pay for anything, unless we can pay lip service to fiscal responsibility to refuse to perform and/or provide basic humanitarian services to people who don't belong to the moneyed class. Without a fundamental shift in our philosophy, that will not change, and it's certainly not going to start with a coronavirus vaccine.

People's brains are dead now, we're getting thicker every year, you can't explain to these people that it would cost more not to pay for it now.

We can't because we gotta cut even more taxes for the rich and the military needs even more funding. Fuck everything else.

If you can't handle being asked a dumb question or a question about cost without flying into a rage, maybe health care is not a good field for you. I imagine half the questions doctors and RNs deal with are either stupid and/or related to payment.

Uninsured sick people are very inconvenient and people aren't even trying to hide it anymore. It's always "if you gotta die, just do it quietly and let us do our thing, leave your vote on the way out."

I agree, how are we going to pay for it? You want to take money from the cash-strapped military??

This is a weird question to ask about vaccines
because the cost is in the research which is heavily publicly funded already and it's preventative care which saves money.

Easy answer: use part of the 700+ billion dollar budget assigned to the military instead on healthcare, shocker...

eliminating the military entirely wouldn't cover the cost of free universal healthcare. Medicare already eclipses the defense budget

i know the response will be "nobody asks how we pay for xyz" or "tax abc" which is fine — I'm not saying it can't be done— I'm only making this one point about using the military budget to pay for it

The 2009 H1N1 vaccine was free in the US. I don't see why this would be any more difficult.

"what the hell even are taxes"

It legit wouldn't surprise me if most Americans see taxes as just a giant racket. Like, the big bad government steals money from ya every year and you pay it to keep them from breaking your kneecaps and repo'ing your shit.

Evil News Corp garbage love this argument because america's garbage health system makes no sense unless the alternative is prohibitively expensive.

Otherwise you have to consider that the only reason things are a complete shitshow is because of evil psychopathic "i got mine" ness, oligarchs deliberately pushing inefficient, expensive systems that serve only to generate profits for billionares

A better one would be "how do you expect to have nurses, physician assistants, and pharmacists to administer the vaccine when in order to make your plan work you're going to have to cut healthcare provider wages?" The impact of reimbursement rates to wages is very real, and is not something that gets the kind of attention it should have because not every review on Bernie's plan matches the rosy picture of what he projects out of the Lancet study.
Wow, that would be terrible, creating all those jobs and work for health prefessionals. How awful.

cool that in your sick and depraved country, you admit that half the questions a doctor has to deal with are related to payment (and not the actual treatment part lol)

How do other countries figure out this stuff but "America, the greatest country on earth™ " can't?
Conditioning.

People have been conditioned to think that anything that benefits everyone (some sort of socialism) is actually COMMUNISM by the back door and they're afraid of it, because their capitalist masters told them so. A lot of bootlicking and a lot of "fuck you, got mine" doesn't help.

This is why I fear for the NHS.

I work as an Epidemiologist, and want to head to medical school. Questions like these just make me want to give up. Such disingenuous and ignorant attitudes toward funding of public health services.

But remember: That is the unbiased press for you.
The same unbiased press that had visible hardons after the murder of Suleimani, urging to go to war, calling it inevitable across all channels.

The media in America are fucking disgusting just parroting this right wing talking point. People will die if they aren't able to access a vaccine.

Somehow every developed country, and plenty of poor ones on manage to afford its people "free" healthcare. It's times like this when the shortcomings of private healthcare will be laid bare as people can't afford to see a doctor or buy the vaccine, so the threat becomes even greater.

It's more like "sound bite trolling". It worked, too, as it often does.

Also, "good faith", lol.

I mean, if it a was bad faith question (and not just someone being dumb) it definitely didn't work because the answer made them look good and the person asking the question bad.

It's aggravating when people ask that question now. It's a pretty simple answer, but some folks get appalled by the answer. Tax the hell out of the wealthy, cut down on the military budget, and add a tax to the lottery or something.

My state uses money from the lottery to pay for free college. There are ways.

My favorites are the people who bitch about how difficult their life is and how they struggle, but straight up gasp at this idea and vote Trump.

Sorry. Rant over.

I have multiple friends in various aspects of medicine who have all been working in hospitals and clinics, and every single one of them is completely tired of seeing people left to rot in the open air because capitalism is held in higher regard than the life of the individual. The amount of decay and death they have to witness, knowing full well what could or couldn't be done to help them, emboldens their feelings towards monetary gating of proper treatment. Their rage should be perfectly understandable, and we would do well to listen to their perspective and understand this isn't just popping off because someone asked what their favorite color is.

Right now, in the face of potential crisis, absolutely none of them want to hear a word about where the money is coming from.

America. Vote for Bernie for the love of anything good.
I can't even believe this is up for debate. In Canada we would laugh at the thought of having to pay for this.

Well its too late. The Bernie ship has sailed. Here's the problem with our shit healthcare system; someone will get the novel Coronavirus but due to not having any insurance, or being underinsured, they will NOT go get tested because they can't afford to. It's going to happen, hell it may have already happened. but i'm supposed to give a fuck about "how we pay for this" crap? This is literally people's lives now, its no longer hyperbole, its real people getting sick and dying.
