Gibson also just gave some YoY data for some titles:

Mario Kart refuses to slow down. We're not seeing a new one until Switch 2 aren't we...meanwhile BotW keeps climbing. Curious if it can maintain its momentum even with the release of BotW2; maybe a Pokemon Go effect on its sales same time next year? People treating it like a double-pack with how interconnected the two are on top of the potential Zelda All-Stars we could get.

It gained week on week after the announcements of both BotW2 and Age of Calamity, so it could be unaffected if the games are different enough gameplay wise.

Based on Gibson's tweet, assuming he's comparing Week 52 2019 to Week 52 2020:

Mario Kart 8 Deluxe: ~68.2K
Super Smash Bros. Ultimate: ~53K
Super Mario Party: ~41.9K
Splatoon 2: ~32K
BOTW: ~13.8K

Comparison between PlayStation ecosystem HW sales in the first 8 weeks since PS2/PS3/PS4/PS5 launch (Famitsu)

4bRQrGm.jpg

Note: PS3 and PS5 launched in the same week of the year (week 46 which correspond to mid November), PS4 launched in mid February, PS2 launched in early March.

PSOne did help PS1 to sell revitalize hardware sales in Japan but its launch (Week 27, 2000) didn't allow the platform to outsell PS2 until Week 30. Then PS1 outsold PS2 in August especially thanks to the launch of Dragon Quest VII which went to become the highest selling PS1 game ever (it's one of the few games that sold 1m units during the second week).

GBA outsold DS in Week 37, 2005, but only thanks to the release of GBA Micro. This happened very rarely for Nintendo platforms as they have a more skewed lifecycle.

Yeah. DQVII combined with price difference between Psone and PS2 (15k yen vs 40k yen) allowed it to outsell PS2 during few weeks. Didn't remember GBA outselling DS during any week though so good catch.

So ... uh is Momotaro gonna outsell Monster Hunter World? Is it one of the top Japanese third party IP now (or again)? What is the best selling Konami game in Japan anyway?

Switch did reach 6M in 2020, only not in the Famitsu tracking period. Not even accounting for MyNintendo sales. Incredible numbers for our little hybrid.

OK seriously now are these due to low demand cause I was certain it was just supply constraints.
I know thats what we do in this thread but at some point...when numbers are this low the reasons because kinda irrelevant. The numbers are bad and it's gonna be months until a exclusive system seller gonna release - at best and that assuming XVI doesn't release also on PS4.

Not saying Sony has completely given up on Japan yet but if Nintendo doesn't screw up their Switch follow up system it's gonna be some rough years ahead for the Plattform.
The real question is how long will it take PS5 to sell what Switch did in 2020?🤔

Okay that's just cruel.

Could be. MHW is 3M probably, so there's still some ways to go, but it's looking quite likely that Momotaro will outsell MHW in Japan (and Japan only). Before this, it's never reached 1M before, this is a blow-out of the franchise's popularity. Best-selling Konami game is Yu-Gi-Oh with 2.2M or thereabouts. It's going to beat that one easily.

I wouldn't call it low demand but not having a premiere game in the holidays did slow down the hardware sales a little bit. It was overall a exceptional year for Switch hardware though.
I think they meant PS5.

By the end of 2025 is my guess.

Here:

3. Story of Season Ranch of Olive Town - 15 pts

We didn't reach 6 million :(
I blame Tbone.
This just means 6 million is guaranteed for #Team2021 (#Team2020 here though). Amazing year thanks to the Animal Crossing effect, even if it's just shy of the big 6.

Did the PS5 get a restock for the week this data applies to? I thought I saw that stock was returning, so these numbers would be pretty grim. Hopefully it's still supply constrained.

So Switch is in Japan 32% YoY for the whole year 2020. I expect it to be comparable regarding worldwide sales. Switch will end up at 26.0 till 26.5 mio. units in 2020. Due to that, I expect 10.5 mio. shipped units for the christmas quarter.

I'm not sure what to think about Sony's strategy for the PS5 launch in Japan. I guess their plan was to launch small and at least satisfy their most passionate fans, then go for bigger sales later once they have more games and the global supply is healthier.

I think a big question is whether the small launch is going to hurt them long term, if it creates negative PR and momentum, affecting retailer and publisher expectations. But I guess they are relying on the global strength of their brand to see them through.

Imagine if someone made a news article weeks before launch about Sony "sidelining" Japan market. I bet he'd be famous and get a lot of praise and thankyous for informing everyone about the situation.

Well it's not like there's any engaging content for the Japanese audience even if there was supply. But I guess if Sony didn't sideline japan, some publishers would have something?

What do we think the Switch install base will be before the launch of MH Rise? Somewhere in the 18-18.5M range?

This might be really really pessimistic, but I honestly think the PS5 may sell as much as the Vita.

Maybe worse who knows. I feel like having mediocre software numbers and not shipping enough units early may really hurt the sales potential in the long term. I wanna say FF16 would help push the system, but I'm thinking Square may indeed have a PS4 version as well just in case.

Well, Switch sold less than we hoped, but with the last few days of 2020 it should be well over 6 million.

A safe bet fot 2021 would be at least 5.5 million to not get to disappointed in the end, since this is the usual reaction here.
I do hope for the Switch to sell more than 6 million in 2021.

Either way, if the Switch doesn't fall of a cliff and sells more than 5.5 million this year it will definitely be the best selling gaming system of all time in Japan.
My bet for Switch lifetime in Japan is 33+ million.

Honestly disastrous launch for PS5 in Japan. Sony couldn't be bothered to scrape up more than a pittance to ship to Japan in December and thus software barely manages to make the top 30. Feels like they completely wasted their first holiday season. Hope Sony actually takes this seriously and diverts more supply to Japan in Q4.

I've been largely lurking but if I was one of the smaller publishers or developers that's been largely console exclusive to Sony for the last couple of generations I'd be really nervous right now.

Maybe Sony will correct this over the course of the year but I can't imagine this doesn't have a big impact. Switch, maybe PS4, is going to be the target spec for a while for certain tiers of games coming out of Japan. Which is going to make it harder, as a consumer, to justify a PS5 purchase if you already have either of those platforms unless you just want a new shiny toy.
