It's gonna be hard for us to see any PS5 software on these charts until they actually start shipping Japan some hardware lol.

770k PlayStations were sold in Japan so far this year. If they are lucky they might get to 800k.

On one hand you hand a pandemic causing manufacturing and shipping issues and on the other you had a new hardware launch.

They haven't exactly rolled over and died yet, that's still a decent amount of hardware in the grand scheme of things. Where there is a will there is a way. Jim Ryan just doesn't have the will and the employees at Japan Studio see that. Only Polyphony Digital and KojiPro are getting any kind of real backing.

The Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries interviewed Nal from Edelweiss because of the game Sakuna: Of Rice and Ruin

The interview seems to be only on Facebook:
https://facebook.com/maffgohan/posts/3089040124530060

Edit:

Here are bits of the interview translated using DeepL:

Q: Edelweiss, what made you decide to involve rice cultivation in the game's theme❓

A: We started considering the idea of replacing the character growth element with other aspects of play. At first, I was thinking of a game about building a village, but then I realized that I wanted to create something that I could relate to on a life-size scale rather than playing from a bird's-eye view, so I decided to focus on agriculture and one crop in particular. I had decided on a Japanese style game world based on the Muromachi period (1336-1573), so I thought #rice was the only way to go. When you live in Japan, rice and rice paddies seem familiar, but unless you are a farmer, you don't know the process of how the rice reaches your table. It's a familiar yet unfamiliar subject, and I thought this distance would be an interesting subject to develop😊.
____

Q: It took five years to develop this product. I heard that you studied rice cultivation thoroughly❗

A: I couldn't rent an actual rice field, but I applied for the "bucket rice cultivation set" sold by JA, and experienced everything from sprouting to rice milling❗ I also read books and articles to find knowledge that I could incorporate into the game. Sometimes I even went to the National Diet Library to look for literature 📚.
___

Q: It was also featured on TV news, but the response was more than I expected ❓

A: I thought it would be played more by junior high and high school students who are passionate about games, because I had developed a shooting game and other games for core game fans. In fact, it seems that people of quite a wide range of ages and positions, from elementary school students to real farmers, are playing this game, probably because it includes quite in-depth content on rice farming. I am also happy to see that it is getting a lot of response and appreciation on social networking sites😄.
___

Q: There was a lot of talk online about the usefulness of the MAFF website.

A: I'm sorry, I didn't refer to MAFF's website during development (laughs). (laughs) Every time I was faced with a point I didn't understand about rice farming, I would get information from the Internet.
Since rice cultivation is an element of character growth, I had to select elements that would make the game interesting to play, rather than simulating everything in the real world. For example, in the real world, natural disasters such as typhoons and earthquakes can cause damage to the rice fields. In this case, we were not able to reflect that, but we were able to reflect the effects of pests by adding materials to the fertilizer, and how to produce fragrant rice, etc. in a way that is close to reality💦.
If you have any questions while playing the game, you can search for information on the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries' website to deepen your understanding of rice farming, and if that makes you want to eat more rice or try your hand at rice farming, we'd be very happy.
___

Q: Marvelous, please use the power of this game to expand the consumption of rice.

A: We have already held a three-way dialogue with a major rice wholesaler, Shinmei Corporation, and a farmer, as well as a collaboration campaign on Twitter. We have also collaborated with a major rice wholesaler, Shinmei Co. We have also received requests from many other companies, and we hope to consider them in the future.

I guess you can say that. I participated in sales threads going way back to 2001, from GameFAQs message boards to the old place until about 8 years ago. Now the best I can do these days is just chime in about Japanese retail (i.e. post store photos, observe trends, etc.). I also have access to comprehensive sales data but I can't publicize those myself as they're paid/protected information, but I can talk about general market trends and translate information from Japanese.

Can you demystify the digital sales in Japan without going into specifics if you have access to such data?

I wonder if other Japanese developers will get on the peach train and start releasing old Japan only standbys on the Switch.

Now that Momotaro is back... It's time for a new Goemon game from Konami!

That's both wild and pretty awesome. You have to wonder how this game would be performing at retail if they'd been able to provide more stock.

Shops are open and busy today, but not anywhere near previous years (especially 2018). Still, saw 10 Switches and just as many RFAs get sold in a 5-minute timespan, so I've got high expectations on RFA breaking 6 figures. Should be a good week for Switch, less so for other hardware. This weekend should be even busier.

Honestly, no. Only Nintendo/Sony/MS/Valve and the third party publishers will know that for sure.

A reasonable ballpark is 5 to 35 percent, depending on the game and the company's strategy. Expect it on the higher end for companies that discount their games often digitally (i.e. Capcom).

This week is the confirmation Hyrule Warriors will top half million in Japan. 400k is the low end for just physical sales, it's the first Musou title in a very long time with this kind of legs.

Japan still lives the last good days of PS4, when its support dies in 1-2 years then the true situation of PlayStation there will become obvious. In any case with the early death of PS4 the decline is much faster than would be expected a year ago, PS5 was supposed to give some life but Sony didn't care.

With momotaro looking to be a near lock to hit 2 million it got me thinking about how many 3rd party games have actually cracked this milestone in the last 10-15 years? I can think of a few but it really feels like there isn't many outside of your usual MH and DQ. I know minecraft and YW but I'm turning up a blank otherwise.

Otherwise the big story this week has to be the strength of switch SW. The evergreens are selling an insane amount really.

It depends of far in time you want to go... The last third party game not belonging to Dragon Quest, Monster Hunter and Yo-kai Watch franchises and not being Minecraft to achieve 2 million units was Final Fantasy XIII in 2009 (shipped) and, before that, Final Fantasy XII in 2006. If we want to exclude Final Fantasy too, then I guess it's indeed Yu-Gi-Oh! Duel Monsters 4 on Game Boy in 2000.

23./24. [NSW] Taiko no Tatsujin: Rhythmic Adventure Pack <Taiko no Tatsujin: Don and Katsu's Great Time Adventure \ Taiko no Tatsujin: Dokodon! Mystery Adventure> <ACT> (Bandai Namco Entertainment) {2020.11.26} (¥6.100) - 9.533 / 39.876 <40-60%> (+29%)

30./00. [NSW] Taiko no Tatsujin: Drum 'n' Fun! <ACT> (Bandai Namco Entertainment) {2018.07.19} (¥6.100) - 6.612 / 545.603 <80-100%>

Perhaps Namco could have waited a little more and release a new Taiko game for Switch in Summer 2021 (that would be 3 years after the previous one).

The first entry is still selling well and maybe it could have sold even more without Rhythmic Adventure Pack around. It is also true that at this point it is difficult to release a new game and convince people to buy it given the amount of DLC released. But, rather than declining sales over entries like on 3DS, perhaps on Switch we could witness something like what happened on Wii, where the first and the last entries sold about the same and much more than the three entries in between.

Color me surprised that Konami was able to get so many copies of this game on shelves... Did they know in advance it was going to be more popular than any of the other entries? Im accustomed to seeing developers be caught flatfooted when a success like that explodes on a Nintendo console. But looking at that list, Nintendo is owning Japan. Maybe devs there have long since been open to that possibility.

I wonder if the massive AC success will make Nintendo release the next game way earlier in Switch 2 life. It has become their biggest system seller after Mario Kart.

The game was topping pre-order charts months before its release, from the moment Konami moved the initial release date by a few weeks before so that they have the entire holiday season in front of them there was a very good idea for its potential.

Earlier on, I thought it was a mistake to release ACNH so late into Switch's life. New Leaf released early on 3DS and had fantastic legs throughout the entire generation.

But it turns out that Animal Crossing also has retroactive legs. Everyone who would have bought ACNH from 2017-2019 all bought it at launch in 2020 anyway.

And it still has legs.

Yeah, had it been Square Enix, Momotaro would be so supply constrained that it should be out of top 30 by now.

From the moment Harada does everything possible to keep Bandai Namco Studios projects away from Switch at some point the company has to see the situation more seriously. They get easy money with almost zero effort from cheap outsourced projects and they seem to be satisfied with that when they could get many more. Family Trainer this week will possibly become another 100k+ seller and is again another enchanted port this time of the first Wii game. Unless it's a multiplatform release with Koei Tecmo or B.B.Studio developing the budget Bandai Namco gives to Switch titles is very low.

Somewhere. I think.
Momotaro will finish around 1.2M, Powerful Baseball 2020 almost 500k, and then the rest.

With Media Create that has 53 weeks, it will be much higher that these thanks to the extra week.

I see. Hopefully they'll have something else along with that.

Late to the discussion, but while there's no much data about Southeast Asia's market in general. I can say that the Switch alone pretty much put Nintendo back on the spotlight. (at least in Thailand where I live) There's a lot of potential they can grow here and only time will tell.

And also a bit of an interesting news here. It was tentatively announced that Synnex, an IT distribution company, have partners with Nintendo to release their console in Thailand. Words is that they will have more info when they announced officially in January. So it's remain to see what's going to happen. But it would be an interesting move from Nintendo to try to grow more into the SEA region.

Nice to see them reaching to more countries/regions. That's one area where they've really been lagging behind the competition.

Wait, didn't the physical Yokai-Watch released last week? How it sold ~21000 this week, but has ~30000 total?

I assume Chris merged the sales of the digital version by mistake (we got some data for the download cards, not eShop sales).

Did word of mouth worsen for Sakuna? Missing the Top 30 might be explained by shortages, but it also left the eShop Top 20.

There's a weird silence from them but I'm optimistic in that I think they are taking Switch development more seriously and properly give time for the teams to make high quality games. I still believe they have an exclusive Tales game in development.

Since Dragon Ball Xenoverse is not internally developped, I have good hopes that 3 comes out to the Switch (it is either a 2021 or 2022 release imo).

That's probably the biggest game coming to Switch from Bamco in the near future.

Give thanks if they make a port of Tales of Symphonia.
