According to numbers posted by KillerMan91 on the previous page, it would be the 2nd best week 2: -

Week 2:
PS1 1997: 136.465
PS2 2002: 114.167
DS 2009: 101.630
3DS 2012: 100.668
The most impressive part imo is that there were no big game release either a month before or after.

PS1 for example had its biggest game launching at the end of January (FFVII).

Here are some old posts I had replied to in this thread:

I think Bamco is the only publisher who's actually baffling me on their Switch support. Capcom I get. Falcom I get. Even EA I get. Bamco is ?????? One of the largest and most platform-agnostic publishers in the entire world and the best they can do is port some licensed shounen anime games a year later.
Didn't see this until now because you didn't @ me lol.

I think I stand by that. I'm not directly comparing Capcom to Bamco there. I get why Capcom's Switch support is garbage. They're a mid-sized company roleplaying as a SE-sized company and thus their output is basically restricted to 1-2 AAA games per year (which aren't on Switch) and legacy collections. I don't get why Bamco's support is mostly late ports of licensed games. They're not treating the Switch like a market leader, despite selling more software on it than the PS4 in the last year. It's not garbage support like Capcom, but it's weird support that I don't understand.

i was talking about the ps5 in that first post you replied.
I thought it was a typo.

Well it is hard to say right now since we know so little about it. However, the safest guess would be that the PS5 will be another decline for the PS brand in Japan since it'll likely follow the same philosophy than the PS3/PS4.

And I would say that there is a high chance the PS5 will be more expensive than PS4 at launch.

So what peak percentage of weekly hardware sales will the Switch reach this year?

Week 2 is already starting with an insane 94%
But can we go even further beyond?

A permanent price cut might have kept it above 15k. Sony can't be bothered with sustaining PS4 hardware sales in Japan with deals. Probably hoping software will do the job.
Seems like people are buying more used than new, so cutting the price of the console will net them lower revenue with no pickup from game sales. Kinda at an unwinnable situation here

i find it hard to believe that the PS5 will sell less than 10mi LTD, but we'll see.
PS5 will not sell more than 10mi LTD. Why would there be a bump from the PS4?
I remember Media Create threads in 2017 when people doubted Zelda reaching one million.

No could have foreseen the true extent of Link's stamina reserves.
I was arguing with someone that it wouldn't reach a million physical in the year 2017 and it didn't.

It could, but it wont really matter that much if it does, in my opinion. The PS3 ended up at 10.21m (Famitsu numbers). The PS4 will likely end up close to that. Even if its a few hundred Ks below or above, its not a big difference.

The issue with a price cut is that it will slow the adoption of the PS5
Yeah I can't imagine why they would have a permanent price cut now, makes no sense, PS4 hardwares sales have been dire a long time now and they haven't reacted as such, why when the PS5 will be released this year would they resort to it.

The only potential problem is hardware/software momentum. It's great having the PS5 eat all of the PS4's hardware and software momentum quickly but if the PS4 hardware and software sales are in completely dire straights that won't be much for the PS5 to consume.

They are already selling (thursday) the Yakuza 7 and DBZ kakaroto at Yadobashi at least. I think they will perform quite well (expected, maybe). I saw some ppl buying PS4 at book off today (first time I saw since I live in Fukuoka). Even tho, all will sell less than switch, which is massive. Today was the first day I saw almost same amount of ppl looking at PS4 section than Switch lol

Btw, PS4 slim 1tb at 38.000 yen at Yodobashi is like... wtf!!! I dont know why is so expensive PS4 here (new). The best way is buy used PS4 (16.000 yen for the fat, up to 26.000 for slim and 28.000 for Pro. Special editions like Death stranding: 35.000-44.000 depend on place)

Preorders for the collectors edition of Persona 5 scramble ended this week. Now it's impossible to get one, only at few online stores.

Somewhere. I think.
Dengeki:

Pokémon
  • Pokémon Sword: 34 131 units (39 000 units with the Dual Pack) / 1 444 552 units LTD (1 870 000 units LTD with the Dual Pack)
  • Pokémon Shield: 26 381 units (31 000 units with the Dual Pack) / 972 965 units LTD (1 390 000 units LTD with the Dual Pack)
  • Dual Pack: 4 831 units / 421 197 units LTD
  • Total: 3 260 000 units (including Dual Pack)

This week
  • Hardware: 128 000 units sold (-62.7%)
  • Software: 341 000 units sold (-64.3%)

Fiscal Year (April 1st to December 29th)
  • Hardware: 4.48 million units sold (+2%) / 124.2 billion Yen (-5.2%)
  • Software: 18.21 million units sold (-7.6%) / 120.6 billion Yen (-5.4%)
  • Total: 244.8 billion Yen (-5.3%)

Hardware sales are down by revenue due to the cheaper Nintendo Switch Lite.

For FY 2019-20 to end up Year on Year, total sales during Q4 (January to March) need to top 100 billion Yen.

Why not? We're talking about one of the most popular and consequential Japanese games of all time. FFVII has a huge legacy and PS4 userbase definitely resonates with this kind of games.

I'm not saying 4m+ but 2m should be achievable. FFXV did 1m and wasn't highly received. MHW did 3m and counting. DQXI go way above 1m. FFVII in terms of importance and mindshare is definitely bigger than FFXV and DQXI.

I just don't see how the first part of a game that will continue on the next generation of consoles, with a port almost guaranteed coming to PS5, can sell 2 million on a console at the end of his life cycle.

I don't doubt it's gonna be big, but i think a big part of sales will come from PS5.

...

In other news, holy shit Switch 120K this week is huge

It's nice that 13 Sentinels is enjoying late legs. But the game will drop hard next week if there isn't new stock for the weekend.

Even with that, FFVIIR is just the first part of the original game, people says this game will be around 30h of content but not too much more. Many players will do the usual for JRPGs: finish the game and sell it. It'll be very front loaded and probably the second hand market will affect sales soon after release. It'll depend of how many sales are Digital, of course. If they re-release the game for PS5 later this year or 2021then there's a chance.

Looks like Switch is poised to have at least 3 5M+ Sellers with Smash, Pokémon SwSh and Animal Crossing New Horizons. Did a quick survey of Gamedatalibrary, and found the following number of 5M+ sellers per system:

NDS: 5 (New Super Mario Bros., Pokémon Diamond/Pearl, Pokémon Black/White, AC: Wild World, Brain Age 2)
Gameboy: 2 (Pokémon RGB, Pokémon Gold/Silver)
GBA: 1 (Pokémon Ruby/Sapphire)
Famicom: 1 (Super Mario Bros.)
3DS: 1 (AC New Leaf)

So in this scenario, Switch would be the second platform in terms of 5M+ sellers (I am assuming shipments instead of retail sell-through due to digital sales - feel free to add to this if a game is known to have shipped 5M+ in Japan but isn't listed here). If this comes to pass, then that would be another confirmation that Switch is a very powerful platform for software.

You're forgetting Famicom Tantei Club Remake. Unless you're talking exclusively of 5m games, not 6+m?

;)

Curious to see if a brand new NSMB on Switch could pull at least 4m.
I think a sequel to 3D World including multiplayer options could do 3 million. Nintendo should concentrate on this. Gameplay is very close to 2D titles but it feels fresh and looks beautiful.

Ace Combat sold roughly the same on 360 so it's safe to say there will be no more growth or bouncing back for that franchise in Japan. :(

Don't forget that it doesn't include digital sales and that according to Media Create, AC7 already sold 249.839 by February 17 while Famitsu says it sold 220.195 for the whole year. This is a huge difference.
I think AC7 did really great and may not be so far from AC5 in term of sales.

I must be one of those few people who were not disappointed with the last DLC character for Smash. I had a feeling they would announce a Three Houses character to promote marketing for the game but for the characters after the season pass, so for me I was pleased Byleth was included. I still would have preferred Edelgard or Dimitri, however.

But hopefully this could drive more interest in Three Houses' retail sales in Japan since I always look forward to seeing my favorite games do well on the charts.

During the week of December 23-29, Pokemon SwSh sold 243k, leading to a total 2.988 million. Sun/Moon sold 3.822 million lifetime in Japan. Sun/Moon lifetime worldwide sold 16.17 million units. In Japan it sold 3.822 million units, therefore Japan made up 23.6% of total SM sales. If we extrapolate that worldwide and apply the same ratio to SwSh which is at 2.988 million in Japan, that's 12.64 million total. So at least based on my own predictions, a safe range of where Pokemon SwSh sold worldwide, based on this data is 11-14.5 million.

22.5% of Switch worldwide sold to Japan as of September 30th 2019 As of the same date 32% of 3DSes sold to Japan. So this data, if accounting for hardware totals, is likely to be higher than my estimates predict.

You should add the digital factor. It was almost non-existant on 3DS whereas it is not on Switch (especially because of vouchers). ~630k were sold digitally week one in Japan.

+ Week 1 sales should be accounted into the 2019 shipments.

Currently I think the game was in the 14m-15.5m range.

said in the other thread, but I'm not sure NSMB will come in time to solely do 4m on NSW

I think a new NSMB will release in 2023, and will be MK8D'd to Switch 2 soon after or BOTW'd on the same day.

Both hypothetical SKUs combined I think a good new 2D Mario should be able to reach it.

The Switch is starting the year off great. Will be interesting to see how Ring Fit and Brain Training do over the next few weeks.

Actually I wonder which software will have better legs due to the AC effect that will happen.

what was inappropriate about this

A long time ago there was an argument for a lower than expected software sales (I think it was a Pokemon game?) and a user blamed the heat wave in Japan that prevented people from going out from their house. It sounded ridiculous at that time so it started to become a meme, but people stopped using that when they knew that there are people who died from said heat wave.
