I really don't get the hate for the Wii U, aside from its third-party support, of course. Worked great for me, the OS was unique, Miiverse was amazing, and the GamePad was really comfy and fun to use. Lots of good memories playing it and I'm not sure what there is to hate.

Regarding what you say about the manufacaturing, how does that work by the way? Can the code be copied to the cart elsewhere (as in, outside of the factory that makes the Vita carts)?
Basically, yes. Vita carts are just standard flash memory chips partitioned to a read-only part and a small write-enabled part, all you'd need is some hardware to write the contents onto them. Most other cart-based systems use some sort of ROM for their carts.

Even better. What were the big third releases last year? Though as a whole, quantity of software really helps push overall software numbers.

Of course they can. They didn't have as good of an excuse they do now (next gen) and still ignored it for 3 years

I don t understand the wiiu hâte.

wiiu had lots of problems like price, marketing and 3th party support.

but the hardware in itself was great
Miiverse was a great idea that i would love to see return to switch (like 3ds street pass)
Game pad was one of the best controler ever made.
The concept was underused but was great when used (zombiu, game & wario...) and even having inventory or map on the pad was confortable)
I just wished it would be possible to use many gamepad for emulate the GameCube + gba combo

I liked my Wii U, but I stop short of calling the hardware "great," I'd honestly argue that the hardware was really bad and that contributed to it's failure.

Add me to the "holy shit this is garbage" ex WiiU owners. The entire user experience was so bad it actively make want to not play games on it. The tablet was a good idea but it felt ultra cheap, the screen was awful and in general the OS was way too slow.

add me to that. I was having a conversation with a friend yesterday and I was telling him the wii u had some image problem. I always wanted to puke when playing games on it. I even tried to play on it again a couple of weeks ago and the nausea came back really quick.

I can't point to what makes me feel that way, but I think it has something to do with the gamepad screen.

I see. Now that you mention it, i remember that i've looked into it before. Do we know for sure that Vita carts uses Flash-memory like that? I tried to find more info on it before, but i couldnt really find anything. And wouldnt it be possible to delete a Vita cart with an hacked Vita in that case? Unless it does require some special type of hardware.

WiiU is probably one of the worst engineered consoles when it comes to performance/price ratio. It even had handicap against last gen consoles (CPU performance was lower than on PS3/X360 as far as I know) and yet it costed way more. I guess they really wanted that Wii BC.

Yes, specifically some sort of a propriety SanDisk product. I believe there's special protection on the writable part that you would need special hardware to rewrite, but can't say for sure.

WiiU was the crappiest hardware I've ever bought. Some great first party games, but no third party support. Hardware concept was confusing and not well executed. It was expensive, and its frankenstein tech design was dumb, because it made a power wise inferior product more expensive.
And I'm a massive Nintendo fanboy.
I was really happy with my WiiU in the end (outside of the general sluggishness), miiverse included, but the hardware concept was definitely confusing and badly thought out.

Not just that but while the first-party games were of good/high quality their release schedule was botched to really propel momentum for a console that was losing hype since launch.
The reason it was losing hype even before launch was that its unique selling point wasn't good (edit: and Nintendo strong title aimed at early adopters was NSMB which sell good to casuals but it's the kind of game that can produce excitement for a new console).
WiiU uses the same identical strategy behind Wii/DS and NSW, the difference is the goal tackled and the execution to achieve it (they are all different between the three cases).
WiiU goal and its execution (promote social gaming in the living room through one user that hold the GamePad that act as a catalyst and the interaction between two different kind of screens) was utterly rejected by the market.

Someone previously had said that WiiU can be considered a failure only by Nintendo (high?) standard.
In reality no company want to be associated with a product that had negative shipment during some quarters (Europe in the third or fourth WiiU quarter).

WiiU was a failure by any standard, just like the Vita or the Saturn were one.

You don't need to be compared to the Virtual Boy or the Pippin to be a failure.

I always thought to my self that they should have focused more on the off TV play feature and made that a huge focus of the system (forcing all games to use ir). The marketing was a mess with the Wii U and to be honest the library isn't good at all. Nintendo rushed a lot of their games.

The issue with the Wii U is that its best year for pretty much everyone (2014) was essentially made out of five games. For the whole year. This just couldn't fly today.

"Final Fantasy VII Remake appeared at 1st place. A wide range of fans, from old to new, have purchased it and sales have been strong nationwide. In addition, it seems to be a masterpiece title and including bundled version it is raising PS4 hardware. Other PS4 titles released from March to April, such as Resident Evil 3 and One Piece: Pirate Warriors 4, are also performing well."

Comg has some usage with high selling titles not with those that 10 people bought.

User banned (1 month): trolling, platform wars, history of similar behavior
Ff7 and AC both sold out on amazon Japan. Digital will be huge.

On another note I read today that Nintendo banned Square from their offices for 10 years because they chose to support PlayStation which resulted in a big grudge between the companies. Would this explain why Nintendo haven't been getting full 3rd party support since?

Not the 10 year banning part but Square moving to Playstation and experiencing wild success was certainly part of why their Nintendo support was tepid. Also back in the day multiplatform development wasn't nearly as common. Gotta remember FF only went launch day multiplat with FF13 and that was considered a betrayalaton.

Now a days it's just hardware lacking the power to bring out their most AAA experiences. I have no doubt that next gen if Nintendo's hardware can receive ports, you'll see more companies expand the range of support for it.

SE is arguably Switch's biggest supporter so no?

People clearly haven't touched their Wii U in quite a while.

The software was great, but come on, the hardware wasn't good.

Nah, I love the Switch but going back to the Wii U, I enjoy the comfier controller and more charming OS. It's fair enough to say it was underpowered when it came out, but for the significant number of people who use the Switch as a straight home console, the Switch is even worse. I didn't get the hardware criticism before and I still don't get it now.

That Square doesn't exists anymore.
When Square was faced with financial problems in early '00s they seek out to get a publishing deal on Nintendo consoles, ultimately getting one around 2002.
Then the merged with Enix happened (majority of the shares of the newly established SE were held by the Enix owner)

I found the bit about Square saying that it became in their best interest to try to support Sony at Nintendo's expense far more interesting

Square Enix and Nintendo specifically have obviously made up now

I feel that attitude of "help Sony, hurt Nintendo, we benefit" may still exist among some developers

It was a 350 dollar console in 2012 that struggled to demonstrate significant visual advantages over a 2005 console. And in some cases for early games, they were running worse than their competitor's versions.

The backward compatibility was nice. The controller was liked by some but not by others. It's bulky, felt kinda cheap, and the 540p screen didn't feel impressive at the time.
Lots of people enjoyed playing in handheld mode within a small distance of their console.

Another thing I didn't like was that I often enjoy watching or taking turns playing single player games with people next to me. Relegating major game functions to that screen so only the player knows what's going on was not ideal for me.
