A next generation is coming and, as always, we're still in the hype phase where companies boast about 8K, 120FPS and whatnot, but the fact that next gen consoles will be able to hit 4K in most games seems pretty accepted given that the much weaker PS4 Pro and Xbox One X already can hit that in a couple of titles. And yet, while the added crispness it adds to the image is undeniable... it's kinda hard to justify jumping to that resolution in my opinion considering the huge performance hit. Of course, 720p to 1080p was a huge performance hit as well no doubts, but that was a much more neccesary jump than 1080p to 4K on small/mid-sized screens (under 50'), in which that lost power would be much better utilized into faster framerates or better settings, in my opinion.

With next-gen consoles having ray-tracing capabilities, I'd much rather take a 1080p game with fully ray-traced global illumination, reflections and the extra shit than a 4K game with reduced or no raytracing at all, and on PC short of supersampling shenanigans it'd be such a waste to play at 4K considering the sizes of most monitors. But that's just me of course, maybe people really like them pixels, and I'm sure console manufacturers will obviously go for what's easy to market so we'll probably even see a few 8K games here and there.

1080p with higher frame rate, decent AA and better visual effects has always been a better option.

It's only on consoles where you see games run at medium/low and 25-30fps but at "4K". You never see people on PC customising their settings in that way because it makes no sense.

SNES games and onward are totally playable to me, so I can't say resolution is a huge factor for me. I think art direction is much more important. I prefer higher resolution if given the choice of course, but if there was an option for 1080 and 60 fps or 4K and 30 I would choose 1080/60 every day.

I had this conundrum before I upgraded my PC with Dragon Quest XI - 4k at 30fps, or 1080p at 60fps? The jump in crispness was just too beautiful to ignore on a big TV.

Its worth it, but yeah not really a urgent upgrade. 720p still is fine to me tbh.

1800p looks almost indistuingishable from 2160p on my 49" tv even when sitting pretty damn close. And its a huge performance boost.

I can't see the difference between 1080 and 4k because of my eyesight, so I don't care. I'll choose a smooth framerate every time over resolution

I don't like that your title is about 1080p being fine but then you lump 1440p in with it in the poll.

Multiplayer games on PC -> Fine with 1080p
Single player games with HDR and 4k -> I'm transitioning over to my TV. HDR is a game changer and probably the reason why i'm going to dip hard into the PS5 or Xbox

1440 is the sweet spot for me on 65" screen.
Raytracing being so new going into the new console gen is actually probably a good thing over all. Devs will find a way to exploit it and create much more optimized ways of using it. It's really going to push the technology quickly.

As someone who plays using a 24" monitor: 1080p is fine. I've always prioritized framerate.

I have a 4K TV, but even then, while I can tell a difference, the framerate trade off is absolutely not worth it

Yep. But there's your scaling up between gens.

The other potential issue is, after 2 years or more of games at 4K, are we going to be able to go back down to 1080p releases, or will that be too blurry at that point. Will it be the new 720p? Will dynamic scaling from 1440p be good enough? Who knows.

I'd much rather take a 1080p game with fully ray-traced global illumination

There's no such thing as real-time fully raytraced global illumination. Not even in 20 years. Will 50% performance hit for the amount of global illumination make enough of a difference to be worth it. I hope so...

People were saying the same thing about 720p in the past. They'll say the same thing about 1440p and 4k in the future.

At the moment, 1440p seems to be the sweet spot in terms of IQ and game performance.

On a PC monitor 4K just isn't as big a deal as it is on a tv, it's just too small.

The amount of power it took to get from 480p to 720p and 720p to 1080p is nowhere near the cost of native 4K. We are getting less visual return at a much higher performance cost.

Gears 5 on One X has dynamic 4K, 60fps, and very good graphics. PS5 and Series X will be SIGNIFICANTLY more powerful, so I'm optimistic that we'll achieve 4K games that look good and perform well.

Once I tasted HDR and 4k on OLED I can never go back, you only live once so I rather use my time on consuming entertainment the best possible quality and comfort that I can.

I'd rather devs prioritize framerate, but yeah having the same resolution as the display is preferable, all other factors being equal.

I wish i could play at 4k. I play at 1440p and the jump from 1080 to 1440 p was HUGE. THe ammount of screen/ info i can see is amazing. For example in FM i can get all the stats i want in a single window. In total war I can see most of the battle without going to the "tactical map".

I guess it all depends on screen size and how good your TV is IMO. For me the difference is massive. Replaying through RDR2 on X and it's a mind blowing experience. On a 65 inch Sony Oled.

The problem with that is that it's reaching a point where it's harder and harder to notice any differences. And hell, if you go by those Steam surveys a significant % of players still plays at 720p so it's not like it became unusable.

I think most people would choose something like 1440p 60fps over 4K 30fps any day of the week. Unfortunately I expect next gen to go the wrong way here.

It depends on the price point.

I'm on a GTX 1070 with a 1440p and its not great. But to get something decent now - I'd have to upgrade to a GTX 1080ti or RTX 2080, which is like $600 (or AU$1000). I'm not doing that just to play a few games.

If the RTX 3070 (or whatever performs at RTX 2080 level) for $300, I'd consider an upgrade, but its probably more like its going to be $500.

Play a game at 1080p and then play that same game at 4K on a 55" tv and tell me you don't see a difference.

I disagree that 1080p is enough, but ultimately the player should be making the choice of resolution, target frame-rate, graphics settings, and so-forth. Having to hope that the developer's one-size-fits-all matches what you want is pretty terrible.

We need to completely get away from static resolutions.

We need to be able to set a framerate target and the game should dynamically alter the resolution to hit that target (if GPU bound).

Gears 5 is actually a perfect example. I can set the game to 4K but set a framerate target and the game will hit that target no matter what. And I seriously can't tell when the game is going from say, 1620p to 1800p. That's a far better solution that settling for either a lower resolution or lower framerate. You're getting the most out of your GPU at any given time.

Unless you're sitting 2 inches from your TV or have a movie theater-sized display, I don't think I'll ever understand the vocal outcry for 4K. 1080p is fine for the overwhelming majority of people and I don't think we should be aiming for 4K resolutions for the forseeable future. Focus on performance first.

We need to completely get away from static resolutions.

Also this. I wholeheartedly agree.

I definitely want 4K, but I prioritize frame rate over resolution.

I'll take 1440p at 100+ FPS over 4K at 60 FPS.

4K is a nice resolution to downsample to 1080p from. No more aliasing.

But I do think in some genres - like RTS, you could probably benefit with the extra real pixels.

I'm not going to be as interested in next gen consoles if they favor resolution over fidelity (I don't expect them to actually favor framerate)

After buying a big 4K display, I want everything in 4K. One of the first things I did when I set up the TV was have a look at the Freeview channels on it... and they look terrible. Even the "HD" 1080i ones, let alone the SD resolution ones that make up the majority of channels still. In 2020. I don't think I've watched any of those channels since. It's no wonder people are cord cutting when regular TV looks so awful picture quality wise. On the plus side, RDR2 on a One X looked superb in 4K.

I wish my PC monitors were 4K+ as well. I want that retina-display level crispiness, especially when editing photos and video. I'm sure games would look pretty good on those monitors as well.

If you have a TV over 40 inches, 4k is nice, but I'd still always choose 60 fps over 4k.

On a desktop PC, 1440p is a great res.

Either way, though, I disagree with the idea that 1080p is the sweet spot. It's fine, I can live with it, but higher is clearly better whether it's a PC screen or a larger TV.
