For those who don't know: Ukraine had the 3rd largest stock of nuclear weapons after the fall of the Soviet Union. They gave them up in exchange for guarantees by western nations promising them safety and security. Yep.

It's because a large number of posts from certain users in this thread (and in the socialism OT) are indistinguishable from posts by Russian bots or trolls or have been made in bad faith. Consequently, these members have been banned.

You cannot waltz into a 140+ page thread and pose questions that are indiscernible from trolling (in the context of a 140+ page discussion and eight years of Russian military action against Ukraine) and then be surprised if you receive a poor reception.

Yeah this is legitimately terrifying exactly because this is a rambling, deranged historical revisionism rant. This is not a cold, calculating dictator laying out his reasoning, this is Putin living in cloud cuckoo land

I read a story a few days ago where Macron basically said Putin did this exact thing in person, and that he was far more unhinged than he was just a few years ago, so I guess no one should be surprised.

Russian President Vladimir Putin spent much of his marathon talks with France's Emmanuel Macron this week on the Ukraine crisis reciting grievances that date back to the end of the Cold War, two sources in the French leader's entourage said.

In the first detailed read-out on Monday's meeting in Moscow from the French delegation, the sources said Macron had been struck by how different Putin was to the man he had met in his summer residence on the French Riviera three years ago.

"(Putin) gave him five hours of historical revisionism," said one of the two sources, describing how the Kremlin leader laid out his belief that the West had broken commitments to Russia since 1997 with the enlargement of NATO to include former Soviet bloc states.

"So he goes on for hours rewriting history from 1997 on. He drowns you in these long monologues. And the president (Macron) kept on going back to the issues of the day," said the source.

"These more than five hours of talks make us realise how different the Putin of today was to the Putin of three years ago," said the source, who was briefed on the contents of the Macron-Putin talks and spoke on condition of anonymity.

yeah it's a matter of of when
Honestly, following this speech, I feel like maybe he doesn't want to stop with Ukraine. I don't think this turns into a world war or anything, but I do feel like he's got his eye on rebuilding the old Russian empire and I can't blame Eastern European dudes for being nervous.

Is this all worth Putin bankrupting his country?

They were already in a shaky economic status.
When sanctions hit and they cut off supplies to Russia and it territories.. how many people are going to die due to things like starvation?
The amount of pensioners in Russia living below poverty line is greater than the population of entire Ukraine.

He does not give a flying fuck, as long as he can redraw the map and have his name in the history books as Vladimir The Restorer

This is why the "west" needs to continue to funnel resistance supplies as much as they can post-invasion; need to completely bog down their army and economy in a sustained operation.

He's basically saying that if he wants and ends up invading Ukraine, he has reasons to to it elsewhere too.

if he can successfully push into Ukraine. Moldova is certainly on the cards. I mean Russia already has its own Donbass there with Transnistria and of course the situation in Georgia as well.

Those are "easy" pushes that he can do and avoid NATO response.

This has been one of his big excuses for terrorising Ukraine the past decade. I really hope there is little on his mind about Nato actually starting a nuclear war, because he has proven to be so unhinged that if he does think that, we are fucked.

My thoughts precisely. I didn't think he was this...I'm not even sure what to call it, but I hope hope hope part of this is an act.

With the Donetsk "vice leader" asking for military aid from Russia and Putin doing this song and dance, there can't be too much longer before it starts.
As an aside, a finnish tabloid is calling them (Donetsk) an "imaginary republic".

Putin basically saying that there can be no diplomacy here unless US/NATO agree to all their core demands which includes turning the clock back to 1997 in terms of NATO in Europe.
