Marvel's 'Shang-Chi' Sets Director Destin Daniel Cretton (Short Term 12)

I guess I missed this actually being announced? I thought GOTG 3 and Eternals were the only loosely announced films.

From the trades, we know that Phase 4 will contain:
- Black Widow, directed by Cate Shortland
- The Eternals, directed by Chloe Zhao
- Dr. Strange 2, directed by Scott Derickson
- Black Panther 2, directed by Ryan Coogler
- Spidey 3
- Ant-Man 3
- and now, Shang-Chi
Is any of his past work any good? Never heard of him or any of his past movies.
Short Term 12 is very good. Haven't seen the others.

Pls watch Short Term 12, which contains not only Brie Larsons best performance($10 says she had something to do with Dustin being hired for this movie) but some great early work from Lakeith Stansfield and Rami Malek as well

We knew about Shang-Chi since December of last year.
We basically know about 7 Phase 4 projects that are for sure in development: Far From Home, Black Widow, Eternals, Black Panther 2, Doctor Strange 2, GotG3 and Shang-Chi.
Turns out Brie Larson is in that movie and apparently she's in his new movie. Captain Marvel to make a cameo in Shang-Chi confirmed.
Haven't seen it but Short Term 12 is supposed to be excellent

This is the MCU's MO though. Grabbing directors hot off indie debuts and giving them the reigns.
He's finishing up his second movie, and he probably pitched them something they liked.
Both Shortland, Watts, and Zhao broke out and then quickly got snapped up by Marvel.
Oh yeah, I forgot some of those sequels are definitely guaranteed.

All the MCU sub-franchises have had trilogies. It's a sure bet Ant-Man will get a third.

They've all tried to mix the formula up on the third entry, too. With mostly good results.
With all of these origin movies (doctor strange, spider man, black panther, captain marvel, shang chi, black widow, etc) theres gonna have to be a shit load of movies each year for them all to get trilogies, while also letting guardians, ant man, avengers, etc. to still get movies. I wonder if they're gonna move to 4 movies a year soon?

I liked the other AM films but it'd be the one I'm least excited for. However, with their recent trend of Civil War and Ragnarok bundling a bunch of characters together I hope they use it as a chance to do something more unique or exciting.
I think you can take out the damn near. Ragnorok might could be reconnned into Thor 1 and i doubt you would get much fuss over it

No MCU films have been Direct-to-Disney+ yet.
Maybe that'll change around Comic-Con, though.
It's not a sure bet at all when they could put those resources into a new character and make a lot more money than Ant Man will.
Black Widow begins filming in about a month, Eternals in September. Those are probably the 2020 movies then.

Ant Man needs a new director and writer and then i might be in again.
I'm still upset that Edgar Wright didn't finish the first one. He is a better comedy and action director than maybe anyone else the MCU has had. I'm specifically not talking about the script in this case but how he shoots scenes.
Short Term 12 is fantastic, The Glass Castle is quite bad. Still a very interesting director though.

BTW, Short Term 12 was streaming on Prime Video recently. Check if it's still there because it is great.
Yeah, i know, money talks. I just wish it talked Marvel into getting better talent behind that franchise. They've little reason to make a better film with entry 3.
