Link:
Marvel Studios has found its director for Shang-Chi, the film that will feature the studio's first Asian lead.

Destin Daniel Cretton will direct the feature. He is currently directing Just Mercy, which stars Brie Larson and Michael B. Jordan.
Other directors that were in the running:
Other filmmakers who were in the running for Shang-Chi included Dear White People's Justin Tipping, Master of Young's Alan Yang, who is behind the upcoming John Cho movie Tigertail, and Deborah Chow, whose credits include episodes of Reign, Jessica Jones and the upcoming Star Wars Disney+ series The Mandalorian.
And Disney's plan for the film:
Marvel is said to be planning on assembling a largely Asian-American and Asian cast for this feature.

I guess I missed this actually being announced? I thought GOTG 3 and Eternals were the only loosely announced films.

Is any of his past work any good? Never heard of him or any of his past movies.

From the trades, we know that Phase 4 will contain:
  • Black Widow, directed by Cate Shortland
  • The Eternals, directed by Chloe Zhao
  • Dr. Strange 2, directed by Scott Derickson
  • Black Panther 2, directed by Ryan Coogler
  • Spidey 3
  • Ant-Man 3
  • and now, Shang-Chi
I'm taking GOTG3 since there's now no timetable for when the film will get made.

Cool! Now I'm looking forward to it even more. Just hope they incorporate his superpowers, don't care how brief they were in the comics.

Guessing this will be Marvel's take on an Enter the Dragon/Drunken Master style kung fu flick, like Winter Soldier/spy thriller, etc.

Pls watch Short Term 12, which contains not only Brie Larsons best performance($10 says she had something to do with Dustin being hired for this movie) but some great early work from Lakeith Stansfield and Rami Malek as well

Woah, what? Shang-Chi is getting a movie? That's mint.

We knew about Shang-Chi since December of last year.

We basically know about 7 Phase 4 projects that are for sure in development: Far From Home, Black Widow, Eternals, Black Panther 2, Doctor Strange 2, GotG3 and Shang-Chi.

This is the MCU's MO though. Grabbing directors hot off indie debuts and giving them the reigns.

He's finishing up his second movie, and he probably pitched them something they liked.

Both Shortland, Watts, and Zhao broke out and then quickly got snapped up by Marvel.

Oh yeah, I forgot some of those sequels are definitely guaranteed.

Eww, Ant-Man 3? Really?

Yeesh. I'm down with the rest, though.

Interesting. I wonder what will be the budget on that.
I wouldn't mind mid-scale Marvel films and this and Black Widow could be good candidates.

With all of these origin movies (doctor strange, spider man, black panther, captain marvel, shang chi, black widow, etc) theres gonna have to be a shit load of movies each year for them all to get trilogies, while also letting guardians, ant man, avengers, etc. to still get movies. I wonder if they're gonna move to 4 movies a year soon?

Maybe it'll be 5 once they get fantastic four and xmen.

Cool get, Short Term 12 was great. I remember the news of Marvel developing a Shang-Chi movie but didn't think they were moving this fast on it... I guess this is their third movie for 2021 then.

Another excellent movie that has Brie Larson (to an extent), but something I consider something to watch alongside Short Term 12 is The Spectacular Now.

I'm very curious about Kevin Feige watching Chloe Zhaos The Rider and thinking, " this lady needs to be directing our giant sci fi alien race movie"

Black Widow begins filming in about a month, Eternals in September. Those are probably the 2020 movies then.

Black Panther, Doctor Strange, and Shang-Chi have announced directors, those are probably the 2021 movies.

Well they are expanding into TV more, too.

I liked the other AM films but it'd be the one I'm least excited for. However, with their recent trend of Civil War and Ragnarok bundling a bunch of characters together I hope they use it as a chance to do something more unique or exciting.
Ant Man needs a new director and writer and then i might be in again.

I'm still upset that Edgar Wright didn't finish the first one. He is a better comedy and action director than maybe anyone else the MCU has had. I'm specifically not talking about the script in this case but how he shoots scenes.

Damn, I wonder if we'll ever get an Indian superhero in the MCU, or we'll have to settle for Ms. Marvel because she's more popular than any Indian superheroes and effectively "close enough."
