The people never understand about these lists and why he would pick older films is that the art we respond to while we're young and eager is the art that ends up inspiring directors to be directors. Sure, he could list stuff from the last 20 years but these are the films that arguably made Scorsese want to be a director. That is powerful.

These lists by directors are always boring and pretentious. I prefer Speed Racer than most of the movies in that list (with the only exception being 2001).

Speed Racer has way better cinematography and direction than most of those boring/pretentious films.

I hate the use of the word "pretentious" because it's often a shorthand for "something I don't like or relate to, but can't express why."

And while you're within your rights to prefer Speed Racer's cinematography, your opinion about it when combined with the rest of your post suggests that you determine good cinematography almost solely by how flashy or cool it is.

Seen 3 of those:
2001
Citizen Kane
Vertigo

Really liked those too so i should check out the rest at some point. Funny enough, i would put a few of his own movies above those.

You guys do know he loves Bottle Rocket and Rushmore right

No he doesn't, there was an interview he did with Variety where the interviewer actually mentioned that at one point Scorsese actually stood up and started pissing on a stack of DVD's of movies from the 80's and later and those movies were both in that pile. I think he was also spotted wearing a t-shirt that said "Fuck the MCU" at one point too, but that might have been David Lynch.

Great list. Vertigo and 2001 are timeless classics. Heck I would even say Vertigo is in the top 5 films of all time. In college our film professor gave us an edited version of the film where he cut 3 mins and boy did that completely change the climax of the film, I will always be thankful that was my first viewing of it.

Lol if people actually think Scorsese should watch more movies - the guy watches so many he's practically a walking film encyclopedia. Check out this list if you wanna see some more of his picks, newer and older (and yes, there is a superhero film in the midst):

I've only seen 4 out of these 12 but the only one I'm not familiar with is Salvatore Giuliano - the rest are all classics that anyone serious about films would probably be acquainted with.

There is a rumour that Scorsese murdered the third Russo brother.

I'd go with Rear Window as my favorite Hitchcock film.

it probably is for me aswell, but a movie people always skimp on that i really like is my 2nd favorite Rope, i still cant believe that movie was made in the 40s (as opposed to maybe the last 50s), it holds up really well style and sensibilities-wise

Meh pretty average taste. Where are timeless classics like Battalion Potemkin or any of Méliès work?

There's no way you've seen more than two of the movies on this list, and that's just being generous because Hitchcock and Kubrick are here.

Just so you guys know, The Searchers and 2001 directly influenced Star Wars, which directly influenced the Russo Bros which basically means Martin Scorsese is saying Endgame is the best movie time. So you don't have to worry.

Thread should have an asterisk mentioning that this list was made before Joker has come out

Where's Taxi Driver? At least John Woo had the balls to list Face-Off as his favourite.

I have to wonder whether these movies being listed by these directors (not just this list but others I've seen) are just good movies that they liked and they think are worthy to be on their list, rather than actually their favorite movies.

Like none of them love a well directed huge blockbuster like Jaws for example?

If you haven't seen The Red Shoes, go watch it. It's the best film about being an artist that I've ever seen, to say nothing of its other qualities.

So funny how he only chose films that influenced him and not modern movies he's never seen.
The ironic part is that he probably has seen them. As other people have mentioned, Scorsese is practically a film encyclopedia.

If we're strictly talking Mizoguchi then Sansho the Bailiff >, but then again I can be a sucker for that sort of misery porn.
Truth be told, Ugetsu , alothugh great, is not my favourite Mizoguchi .I like Street of Shame, Women of the Night and Life of Oharu more. I was just concern-shit posting because people were not talking about it.

Only seen six of those. I fucking hate the Searchers. Makes sense for a director to like it but it's a bad watch for me. I knew he was obsessed with that and Vertigo. Did not expect to see the Red Shoes on there.

Marty was in his 30s when Jaws came out.

Again, take a director who is 30 years younger and their list will have blockbusters.

Yes, these are the movies that influenced him the most so he holds them in the highest regards.

Rear Window also very very good, but some of Hitchcock's pre-Hollywood and early Hollywood stuff gets overlooked these days except by strong film buffs. Definitely recommend Shadow of a Doubt, Rebecca, Rope, The 39 Steps, and The Lady Vanishes.

The 39 Steps and The Lady Vanishes are stupendous and effortless fun, and Notorious is a top 3 Hitchcock, probably his first real masterpiece.

I also think some of his post Birds stuff is pretty underrated. Frenzy in particular is really, really good.

Scorsese has been advocating for the merits of The Red Shoes for as long as I can remember. He must be the film's biggest supporter.

I don't think this assumption is really based on anything, considering blockbusters don't exactly do well on aggregate polls of directors' favorites films. Like every other art form there is a rather large divergence between what the medium's greatest enthusiasts like and what the public likes.
