Is there a timeline to be followed with each Mario game?

Because Mario and Donkey Kong (Cranky Kong?) are linked, does this mean that the Donkey Kong Country shares the same planet as Mario? One continent is the Mushroom Kingdom, and another the DK continent? And somewhere between there's a Yoshi Island?

Do any other Nintendo series inhabit this same world?

In my head WarioWare, Donkey Kong Country, and Mario all exist within the same world, but that world isn't set in stone and can be altered or changed in any way to suit the game, so there's a loose mythology of things you can presume are "probably" happening behind the scenes, but nothing is a given or sacred.

There is no Mario canon or timeline. The whole franchise is suppose to be like old theatrical cartoons, just a familiar cast recycled for new stories.

Donkey Kong (Cranky Kong?)
Nintendo has changed the relationship between these two characters so often (recently going so far as to simply say old DK and modern DK are the same DK and Cranky Kong was never the arcade DK) which should tell you the wider Mario world has no consistency.

It's kept extremely vague and there's also the whole "it's all a play" idea (which I think only really works for SMB3 and Paper Mario but hey)

My personal interpretation is...

Yoshi's Island 1, DS, and New Island happen (the latter retcons the first game's ending for no reason which is very silly, while DS basically confirms the green Yoshi throughout the rest of the series isn't the same as the green Yoshi in the YI series, instead being born after Mario. Deep Mario lore.)

Balloon Fight is Mario's teenage years don't @ me

Mario moves out of the weird mushroom house and goes to New Donk City to work as a plumber

The events of Donkey Kong '94 happen, Mario, Cranky and DK become amicable friends, Mario goes back to the Mushroom Kingdom because Pauline wants him to follow his heart or something

Super Mario Bros. 1 happens, and everything else just plays out chronologically

Geographically everything is as it is in Super Mario Odyssey, DK island is just too small to be seen from space and Sarasaland is next to Toastarena or something. Diamond CIty is on the same continent as New Donk.

Donkey Kong Jr. is a dark timeline where Mario gave into his darker impulses and every RPG and spin-off is an alternate timeline because why not. Waluigi doesn't exist in the Prime Timeline, with only his clothes appearing through a time portal in Mario Odyssey.

It's not a continent or planet as such, instead think of it as a set of virtual worlds, software like the hit movie The Matrix, but all separately contained in a multiverse of silicon and discs, and connected through a single thread of intellectual property.

Miyamoto straight up said the timeline and story in Mario doesn't matter, that they're just actors filling roles. There is no big overarching them or timeline to the games man, there's no "Mario Universe", they're just cute characters in cute games.

They're all actors. The question is what's real and what's fiction. But I'm sort of assuming it's all fiction since even stuff like Power Tennis is fake.

Like I would bet you Mario and Baby Mario are just two completely unrelated people. Baby Mario is just a tiny, tiny person who plays a baby.

There is no timeline--just don't think about it and enjoy the ride.

Nintendo licenses the stories and likenesses of Mario, DK, etc and makes video games based on their exploits.

That actually sort of pans out considering New Donk City is filled with restaurants and streets named after the DKC cast

The question is whether or not they receive royalties from Mayor Pauline

This is pretty good... where does Wrecking Crew fit in? Was he in demolition before plumbing?

Mario's a renaissance man who tried out many different careers, lest we forget he also became a referee for multiple sports, presumably between vocations
