Regardless of what you think of Mario Party Superstars as a whole, I'd be willing to bet we can all agree that it looks fantastic.

I've been playing it a bit lately, and I'm consistently impressed by the quality and consistency of the art assets and overarching art style utilized in this game. As usual with Mario Party games, Nintendo has more performance headroom given the small scale of the mini-games that make up the bulk of the gameplay. This allows them to crank up the detail while still maintaining that all-important 60fps framerate for responsive four-player action. The end result is a never-ending parade of visually pleasing character/item models and backdrops, many of which are bespoke to only one mini-game out of 100.

Up until now I've always maintained that Mario Kart 8 has been the best that Mario and all related characters/locales have ever looked. That game brought Mario Kart into the HD era with 60fps performance and tons of detail crammed into every inventive track design. I'd say that it's still more of an accomplishment given how much more that game is doing than Mario Party while maintaining 60fps and a beautiful graphical style, but Superstars is just the overall best-looking iteration of the Mushroom Kingdom "universe" that I've seen to date.

I'd say that Luigi's Mansion 3 is comparable in terms of impressive visual style, but it's 30fps and wasn't developed by Nintendo themselves. So as it stands I think Superstars takes the cake for a first-party Nintendo game. Ultimately, it makes me wish that we could see what Nintendo first-party games would look like on more powerful hardware.

I think there are better looking Nintendo games such as Kirby & The Forgotten Land. Edit: I missed the 60 FPS part

Mario X Rabbids is my personal favorite visual interpretation of the Mushroom Kingdom so far, but that's not Nintendo. This definitely looks good though.

Kind of semantics and a "but actually" post, because I do think the game is gorgeous, but……….

Mario Party Superstars is developed by ND Cube, which is owned by Nintendo. Luigi's Mansion is developed by Next Level Games, which is owned by Nintendo. So by saying "Nintendo themselves" you mean a studio they own, then Luigi's Mansion should count. If by "themselves" you mean EPD, well….neither of these games were made by EPD, which Mario Kart 8 was.

Edit: I am 100% not trying to be a douche. I just got thrown off by ND Cube being considered "Nintendo themselves" but not Next Level Games. I actually had to Google to make sure Superstars was indeed still made by ND Cube! Haha

I see that you brought it up and I don't really get why we wouldn't consider it a Nintendo game, Luigi's Mansion 3 is just so damn beautiful.

I do agree that Superstars looks great, that's for sure.

Yeah, but it's got it pretty easy since pretty much everything is contained to minigames which are naturally pretty small and contained

I remember being surprised more people weren't commenting on the graphics when it was revealed, it looks great. Haven't played it, though

You're right. It's semantic, for sure, but an important distinction.

I incorrectly assumed that Mario Party was developed in-house at Nintendo, but ultimately I'm fine comparing anything created by a second- or first-party team and published by Nintendo for the purpose of this thread.

Yes, Mario Party Superstars is 60fps. On the other hand... dude, Luigi's Mansion 3.

The difference in visual quality between many of Nintendo's in-house titles and plenty of third-party fare is just.

Wild.

I'll be honest, I don't get it. Looks pretty generic and uninteresting to me?

Like sure 60fps is nice but the art direction of modern Mario stuff just puts me to sleep. I think the best looking Mario game is Yoshi's Island on SNES.

It's not a screenshot? My bad then. It came up on Google Images. What's it from?

It's definitely official art and probably even is at least touched up from in-game assets, but it's fairly easy to tell the characters have been inserted into this, it just looks too polished.

edit: A much less flattering screenshot of the same area that's fairly easy to tell the difference in lighting quality:

It's a far cry from mk8 visually ( booster pack tracks not included ) but it is the best looking game that nd cube has put out

The Mario Party games have been surprisingly nice-looking for a while -- of course, they're very small-scale games, so they can polish them to the nth degree.

The power of making a game from the ground-up with the Switch as the target console. Well, that plus developer skill and adequate time allowance.

Look at Yooka-Laylee and the Impossible Lair, for example. That game looks and performs much better than the port of the original Yooka-Laylee, which is far more technically challenged on Switch by comparison. Playtonic said that they developed Impossible Lair with the Switch as the target platform, which in turn had the added bonus of making it look and run flawlessly on the other, more powerful consoles as well.

Framerate adds to the image quality and how good a game looks, personally, so I would agree on Mario Party looking better than Luigi's Mansion. Though I can see why people would vote for Luigi's Mansion, it is a very very pretty game.

The art direction and aesthetic are brilliant. I just love how everything pops, without being overwhelming.

I really hope we get more boards as DLC - I would LOVE to see Mario's Rainbow Castle in this style.

I know the scale and amount of features is on a completely different level, but I played Pokemon Arceus and Mario Party at the same time, and alternating between the two felt like skipping 2 gens ahead lol

I played the Yoshi map with my friends last weekend and the first thing they commented on was how good the fruit looked lol
