The removal of Flash is the only thing they got right.

Everything else sucks.

You know, as much as I hated the headphone jack removal at the time, seeing the teardown of the latest iPhone really shows just how constrained they are for space.

Yeah, it's clear they filled it with something, but as a reminder other phones have the jack. What makes the iPhone so special?

Non-removable batteries, the removal of the headphone jack, and the lack of SD expansion have all been bad decisions for consumers.
  • I had to book an appointment, wait hours, and pay Apple to open up my phone and replace the battery when it stopped lasting all day, instead of just buying a replacement and swapping it over myself in seconds. I know people that have had their phones damaged or the water resistance compromised by bad workmanship.
  • Having to use adapters with headphones sucks. Bluetooth is not always a suitable replacement for a wired connection.
  • Having to buy a new phone when you run out of storage is awful, instead of being able to expand it inexpensively - though I do understand why Apple avoid it (can't guarantee SD performance or reliability).
Are they deal-breakers that prevent someone buying their latest phone? No, not for most people - especially if they are "locked in" to the ecosystem.
But that doesn't make them good decisions for anyone except Apple.

If forcing people to go wireless encourages more innovation and progress made then I'm supporting it. Opinion.
But it never did. Instead, the market has been flooded with crap Bluetooth products. Very little progress has been made to improve it at all, and Apple don't even support low-latency standards like aptX-LL.

At the risk of sounding like the dude at Blizzcon... Don't you guys just keep your dongle connected to your wired set of headphones?
No, because every other device that I use has a standard 3.5mm connector.
I can't even keep the same adapter on for all of my devices, because my phone is Lightning and tablet is USB-C. And that USB-C adapter doesn't work with devices like the Nintendo Switch.

Get a wireless charger
My phone doesn't support wireless charging, and those kill batteries quicker than charging using a cable due to the extra heat.

Why?

No seriously. Why is having more options a bad thing? Removing the disc tray accomplishes absolutely nothing. That's not ripping the bandage off, that's just making things worse.

BC we're delaying the inevitable. The writing is on the wall. Plus I think new feature sets would emerge if competitors needed to go toe to toe digital only.

1. Turned out fine in the end but for quite a few years flash was a neccesity for many sites

2. Continues to be a problem today. Previously when my phone's battery was dying I could buy a replacement battery for £15 and pop it in myself. Now I have to pay not only for the battery but also for labour and the absurd profit margins of massive technology corporations so I'll be lucky to get a battery replaced for £50 and there is less convience in that I have to either go into a manufacturer store to do this (if there are any nearby which there aren't in my small town) or actually send my phone off to the manufactuer which leaves me without a phone for at least a week. Not to mention if you are using a budget phone this costs half as much as the fucking phone. Quite obviously convient to the manufacturers as many people won't go through the bother and just buy a new phone.

3. Sorry but while I like wireless earphones, wired earphones are just much more convienent as with a headphone jack I can transfer from my Xbox to Switch to phone to laptop with no connectors, no syncing and using just one pair of earphones (and yes I frequently use them while charging). Of course this benefits manufacturers too as they can sell their overpriced lightning/USB-C earphones or better yet wireless earphones too.

4. Is quite simply a way for manufacturers to overprice internal memory. Also requires software transfer of data.

Thankfully my phone isn't gimped by 3 and 4 yet. 2 is terrible (writing this on a phone with a substatially worse battery than last year which I would have replaced if I could do so quickly, easily, and cheaply). 1 is the only point that no longer matters.

Heat is bad for most battery types, including Lithium Ion.
c7ra08181b-f4_hi-resspk8r.gif

The phone should stop charging if it exceeds a certain temperature (I'd guess 45C) but fast-charging and wireless charging both generate more heat than using a low wattage charger overnight.
Of course that may not matter if you replace your phone every 12-18 months, but I tend to buy high-end devices and keep them for 4-5 years rather than buying mid-range or low-end and replacing more frequently.

It turned out fine because Apple didn't give consumers an option. Yes you could have just switched to an android device but when you're already in the Apple ecosystem it's going to be painful to leave. Unless you never bought anything through Apple. I tried to go back to Android but I missed the apps I owned on iOS and went back.

Apple could have not been dicks and given consumers an option keep something like a headphone jack or removable battery cover. But they didn't because they don't care about us. Like all corporations.

I feel this speaks more to their supporters, and customer base.

Even if they continue to change things, and it does turn out worse, the core base for Apple is not going to bat an eye, and will continue to buy their product blindly regardless.

Apple do these things because they know they can get away with it, so it's not like they're going out of a limb really with many of these decisions, at least not anymore since they've built up a substantial and solidified following.

I'll only agree with the flash removal, it really pisses me off that I can't replace the battery or upgrade and lose the headphone jack.

The fact that you think those are somehow positive pisses me off as well.

Apple leveraging it's market share to kill Flash, despite it's ubiquity online, was the only good move. The transition to HTML5 was a good thing, but likely would have happened anyways. Maybe you could argue Apple was forcing the change before everyone was ready, which created a period of awkward transition.

Every other point sounds like Apple apologist talk.

For CD/DVD readers, yea, they were on their way out anyway. My self built PC doesn't even have one

But how is the death of the 3.5mm port "inevitable" though.

Like, literally nobody even thought to remove it until Apple wanted to sell more headphones. Oh wait, I mean "innovate"

oh you mean the de facto video transport standard for 20+ years? what a misstep

also you might note that Sony and Panasonic were just as big a part of 1EEE 1394

out of the OP's list, the headphone jack is the only one that was an actual overreach IMO

Fair point. I always forget that FireWire was the standard on video cameras for so long.

I was thinking about the original iPod and how it was FireWire only.

what about the GameBoy? you gonna shit-talk the Game Link Cable?? I THOUGHT NOT

though even I, long time Apple head, can rattle off Apple missteps over the years. some really good ones. the round mouse. the sunflower mac that hit it's own keyboard when you tried to eject the optical tray. the absurdly priced 20th Anniversary Mac that didn't have enough RAM to run it's own demo disc. i kinda liked the Cube but anyone who had a cat was subjected to repeated Sleeps with the cat inevitably perched over the head vent and smushed the then-fancy capacitive button

THAT SAID they also eat a stupid amount of shit because they are just so popular now

You just listed 4 things that a market leader normalized, by taking away from a consumer, for profit.

This. The only even remotely justifiable one is Flash, but the others are complete fucking bullshit that they deserve every bit of scorn and hatred for normalizing. Fuck Apple and all of their overpriced sub standard crap.

Everyone knew Flash was crap. So many things still utilized it back then though that everyone suddenly dropping support for it would've caused problems.

The other three points I still see as negative.

That response was more for a comment about consoles. I'll be honest in saying I think a port that requires one to be physically tethered to a device via a wire will also look antiquated in the future imo (in fact it does already to me).

Until they somehow magically make a wireless headphone set that don't require themselves to be charged and can just work, there will always be a big advantage to wired headphones.

I can literally find headphones I used as a kid 20 years ago in an old box, plug them into a modern device, and they'll work. With wireless headphones, they need to be charged, the batteries degrade and eventually will just totally crap out. They also don't just work, they have to be synced.

I don't even understand where all this rage towards Apple comes from. In the third quarter of 2019, 13 percent of all smartphones sold worldwide were a iPhones. They have tiny marketshare. If you don't like their decisions, there are an abundance of other options, and the vast majority of people worldwide decide to do exactly that.

Agreed that there opportunities for improvement. I don't think that changes my opinion though.

1) Fuck Flash. Jobs was right to start the ball rolling. It was always power hungry and terrible. I'm glad it's gone. HTML5 is so much better. Plus H.264 video streaming instead of Flash based video playback. Sure it took a while for a lot of video sites to switch over to HTML5 and H.264 but it happened. I like to think porn helped the transition. Once they converted over the writing was on the wall.

2) I never cared for removable batteries. In all the phones I've had that had one that could be removed, the only time it ever got removed was when the phone hit the floor and it popped out and I had to hunt it down. Where did it slide? I can't find it. Fuck this phone. Why can't the case just stay closed? I've never really had to replace a battery either. By the time my phone battery gets bad enough it's time to upgrade anyway. The only phone I've had where the battery started causing an issue was my 5C but it was well passed time for me to upgrade.

3) I don't miss my headphone jack on my 7+ but I do agree that there are times I have an issue. Like having to carry both sets of headphones with me if I go on a trip so I can use one set when I am playing my Switch and the other when I am browsing on my phone, plus not being able to plug the phone in to charge while listening to music sucked. But I literally just now purchased some AirPods so I don't care anymore.

4) Okay now I'll admit this would be nice. I have always bought the base iPhone model. So I always had the lowest available storage. 16GB on my 4S and 5C, 32GB on my 7+. And it usually eventually became a constraint. My 7+ now is constrained because I have iTunes Match and for some reason Apple no longer allows you to download smaller 128Kbps versions of the music so I have all my music now taking twice the space even though when I synced manually before I got Match iTunes itself has an option to convert music to 128. I don't know how I even got by on my older phones with 16GB. So yeah, if I could stick a SD card in there and have all my music and photos offload to it it'd be great. But you know what, when I get my 11 I'm just gonna upgrade to the 128GB model and forget about it. Even 64 will be enough. So glad 32 isn't the entry anymore. So stingy.

it's depressing to read how profit over consumer is "pushing us into the future" etc. Big Tech companies have been really successful at engendering brand identification to the point that it sounds like Stockholm Sydrome. like why would you care if a disc drive was on your console, why take choices away from others? Do you love corporations that much

People are fucking lemmings. They obey what Lord Apple tells them without question. None of the listed were positive things Apple did in any capacity(nope, not even gonna give them the Flash one since there were better ways of handling that shit), but they'll fall of their swords for the corporation since it's what gives them identity in terms of social status and their class.

Fuck Flash -- I don't miss it, and still get annoyed when some website requires it (I believe Comcast's Xfinity VOD service still does to this day).

Don't really miss the headphone jack either -- my last one just went bad. The only time I've ever damaged my phone was when it hit the floor because I moved around while still tethered by the headphones.

SD cards I never really used or needed - always just bought phones with enough memory.

1. Who cares

2. Who cares.

3. Switched to samsung.

4. See above.

Samsung seems to follow apple lately and remove any reason to buy their phones. My next phone will probably be something else. If all phones removes the headphone jack I will keep my S9+ until I die.

Apple is fine because they have some of the most unapologetic shills I have ever seen. And I say this as I type from a 2019 MBP and I have a iPhone 11. The iPhone is great tech that is limited by Apples bullshit. This is my first iPhone since the 4S and its so damn maddening to see literally almost everything I hated still present in the new phones. Not being able to download shit in Chrome for instance(without a 3rd party app) is just jarring coming from android. Also I felt like such a fucking sucker paying $10 for the 3.5 adapter(which I thought was included) but bluetooth audio is still such garbage quality.

The notch isn't as bad as I thought though and having the best versions of apps in nice enough. You can tell how every app is specifically tuned to the iPhone. Still not sure on how to transfer files though. What's the point of having 128GBs onboard storage if I can't put shit on it? My old ass LG android has better bluetooth compatibility with my Macbook than my brand new iPhone.

Removing the headphone jack hurts to this day. Not having a removable battery or an SD or mico-SD slot didn't bother me since Apple never implemented those features. Flash bothered me at first, but everyone moved on to HTML5 or CSS.

Actually not wanting or using extra features on your tech and not questioning the tech features at all is the most boomer thing ever.

So is the resistance with the "out with the old, in with the new" mentality including technological changes. I didn't like the scrapping of the 3.5mm headphone jack as well but now it's *shrug* to me.

Or, Apple's dominant market position means whatever controversial decisions they make become de facto industry standards and we all need to live with them.

I still think most of those decisions suck. Basically, Apple reduces the cost of making their phones and passes additional costs on to the consumer who wants to mitigate the loss of whatever feature.

I've got an apple phone for work, and now I'm dealing with a declining battery and a finicky Blutooth receiver and it's driving me crazy. And the corporate repair process is so disruptive that I'd rather deal with the annoyance than get it fixed. I'd love to Be able to swap the battery and use AUX in my truck until my company approved an upgrade. Now I've gotta choose between charging my weakass battery and using my phone in handsfree. It's asinine.

Because the "new" is garbage tier shit that "fixed" a problem that never existed in any meaningful capacity or at all just so that they could blatantly sell you more of their shit. It was never about "innovation" or "moving things foward" or any other gross corporate lingo they come up with, it was always about finding new ways to sell you crap you didn't need and wouldn't otherwise buy if you had better alternatives. About the only feature my old LG G6 lacks is replaceable battery, but other features like headphone jack for far superior audio experience and expandable memory for near unlimited music on command? Yeah I got that and LG has my money forever as long as they get most of these right.

Consumers didn't really embrace these things, more like we were not given a choice. All flagship android just ended up copying apple, it's not like I get an option of removable/non-removable when I buy a galaxy S phone

Just had to switch back to iPhone from Android and the biggest problem I have is the lack of flexibility. On Android, I could do anything I wanted because the OS allows for customization. On iPhone, I have to google to see if want I want is possible.. and it often isn't. That's one decision Apple has made that has certainly not been good. It's crazy to me how static the iPhone experience is.

Also, Apple's decision to not have swipe keyboards has been proven to be bad given that they have that option now. Sadly, I still have to use GBoard (Which is a pain because it has to load up every time I use it) because my phone can't handle iOS13.

I shed no tears for flash. The other changes suck. I'm still rocking my Nexus 6p which I bought at launch in 2015, and have no real reason/desire to upgrade, but boy do I wish it had an SD slot and a user replaceable battery. I had to make room on the internal storage and change the battery last week, and since it's not "user replaceable" it took my wife and I an hour tackling it together and it was a pain, but we got it done.

Hopefully it's good to go for another year or two.

The transition from 3.5mm to Bluetooth was an improvement in QoL imo. 3.5mm audio jack was limited to only audio and mic feedback and didn't feature wireless connectivity via plugging a 3.5mm receptor. Won't argue with some of the issues Apple does with planned obsolescence and lack of modifications on their Macs, especially with how a Hackintosh OS is gimped on a custom-built PC

Exactly. There's a reason half a million users are the whole of the jailbreak subreddit. It's shameful, but I digress. I jumped ship to Android long ago but I still use an iPhone in a drawer from time to time for clients and troubleshooting and of course, to know what's up and stick with the times.

The iPhone could be so much more.
