Unless he was kept on suicide watch (where your essentially naked and under 24/7 observation), I'm sure it was easy to get the razor blade smuggled into the jail and courthouse.

A murderer taking their own life is not exactly justice and arguably an easy way out for them.
They really need to up their security protocl. There's really no way he should have been able to walk into a courtroom with a razor and then been able to use said razor. Handcuff him to floor.

Inmates constantly bring things to and from court. It can be hard to catch at times due to the tempo and amount of inmates they are trying to move. You can't be as thorough as you'd like to be. It also comes down to the officers doing the searches. Some are just lazy and they just half ass it. They are pretty much going through the motions, so more contraband ends up getting through.

Depends on the facility. Physical searches are more reliable if you have people that actually do their jobs. Metal detectors don't pick up everything.
They usually take the blades out of those plastic shaving razors.
They don't like to handcuff people, because it gives a poor impression to the jury, and biases them against the defendant.
