I waited forever for them to fix the PC version before buying. I finally gave up and got it on the Pro and played about 7 hours in.

I don't know if I'll double dip and need to start over. I wish there was news of this fix coming, I definitely would have waited.

Wasn't the main problem of the PC port the crashes? Are they fixed? Or have they been fixed in a previous patch already?
The notes mention that they address a lot of the problems causing crashes.

I don't think Durante would put out something that crashed a lot. I expect most of the problems people were having won't be there anymore.

My experience with the port is that the major crash issues were fixed a long time ago. The port was a bit barebones in terms of enhancements, but it hasn't been broken since like july 2018.

But now it's on the same level as the other Falcom ports, now that Durante's on board. Time for my Nightmare mode playthrough..

Edit: Oh I guess people were still getting crashes since, nice to see today's update address them. A few of my friends and I played through last year and didn't have issues, but I guess I shouldn't overvalue our personal experience.

Ambient occlusion should be optional, judging by the notes. You can probably keep the old method and/or disable it if you prefer.

He said the amount of work it would have required wasn't feasible for this game.
I'm sure that's the case. I have it on switch already So hard for me to double dip

This was the last push I needed to buy it on PC. Had it on Switch but the poor resolution and performance hurt the experience a bit.

Double dipped on the PC port due to Durante's optimizations, was sick of dealing with the shitty performance on my NSW copy. Finally managed to bash my way back to where I left off on the Switch version, and It's been a great experience - graphics are super clean with the high def texture pack, the pop-in is completely gone, and the smooth framerate and minimal loading between areas are a godsend. Worth the money, this is a great port.

The first ever Ys coop. Bosses won't know what hit em.

Ironically, if the "AI cheats" of your formerly computer-controlled party members are removed, bosses could actually be a much bigger challenge in co-op. In order to avoid escort mission-type shenanigans, the party-based Ys games usually gave computer-controlled characters a handful of advantages, such as reduced damage from attacks (they take like half the damage you do), inability to die (they usually just stick to 1 HP until they come under your control) and the ability to perform skills without SP cost. (whenever you used a skill, they usually used a similar one of their own) Especially that last one would mean bosses would take a lot longer to wittle down because you'd now be forced to share your SP gauge with someone else while the computer players could toss out those same skills without any cost.

Yeah started a new game plus yesterday while waiting for a few friends and man...the difference is jarring.

Better late than never I guess, but this is, 100%, a massive improvement. Would endorse if you were on the fence.

The metacritic on steam gave me pause to buy it but the impressions on this thread, the PS4 reviews and this precedent to improve PC ports put me over the edge.

You share the same SP gauge?! So high cost attacks are useless unless they somehow patch in separate SP gauges. No HP buff isn't that big of an issue thanks to flash guard/dodge.

I wouldn't put much stock in the old PC reviews, since it just got a major fix and improvement patch. Most of the poor reviews were due to the technical issues and crashes that should be fixed now and not the content of the game.

"AI cheats" (funnily enough, that's exactly what I called them during development) are in fact removed for the coop player.
[Also, it's actually exactly half the damage, 1HP works as you described, and they also have much slower buildup for e.g. poison]

However, there are also some advantages. For example, SP generation in coop works like it does for the main player, while NPCs generate less SP. The coop player also levels skills on use like the main player does, which is much faster than NPC skill leveling.

Overall, after spending >100 hours playing the game in coop, I'd say it works out surprisingly well balance-wise. Especially since you also need to battle your biggest new enemy, the camera. (The camera was the most complex part to implement, and I like to think it does a pretty good job in the constraints it has, but a shared free cam in a fully 3D game can never work 100% annoyance-less)

Took me way too long to get my controller working in this. For some reason to use an XInput controller I have to check the Generic Gamepad Configuration Support checkbox in the Steam controller settings. Found that kind of strange.

That's...actually weird.

What pad are you using?

I'm glad I bought this game during the Christmas sale but haven't played it yet. As someone who read all the bad things about the PC port being trash, this news brings a smile to my face. Thank so much for your work Durante.

Well now I know I'll definitely pick this up on PC at one point! Thanks as always for your work Durante, as far as game development goes I guess I'm somewhat a fan of you! :P

Wow thank you Durante. I have always wished for a Ys game to be coop-able and Ys VIII will always be a special game in my heart since I played it during a very dark time in my life when my best friend passed away and it somewhat helped lessen the pain. THANK YOU.

Anyone experiencing massive performance hit after this update? Anyone able to get a rock solid 60fps in 4k with a 2080?

I set super sampling to low, not sure what res that is. I dropped shadow down by a notch, still can't hold 60fps.

Hm, did you disable soft shadows specifically? Those are wildly expensive for their visual impact. I'm pretty sure Durante just includes them to show off. That, and in certain scenes the highest draw distance setting, are the only things I can think of that would cause a major performance drop.

Is this update available on GOG as well ?

Also, what were the announcements during that NISA event ? I completely missed it.

The Cold Steel 3 PC port announcement was probably the biggest one. The Ys 8 patch was the second biggest for me but I don't know if it was the second biggest overall.

Langrisser demo was announced.

I think one other small PC port was announced but it looks like nobody even cared enough to mention it in the panel thread.

Is there any chance these updates might make their way to the PS4 version? I dunno about co-op, but Ys VIII isn't exactly a looker and it would be nice to have some of these updates visuals on the console side.

I doubt NIS is gonna wanna spend money on cert for these to hit PS4.
