Weird thing is, ISIS was responsible for a number of terrorism acts on mosques, some of which were in Saudi Arabia... Both on Shia and Sunni mosques.
The more ISIS makes others fear Islam and Muslims, the more attacks or situations like these happen.
Which of course leads to anger amongst muslims and more goddamn recruits for ISIS.

It's a stupidly vicious cycle.

Even when the terror is in New Zealand......

America is still strangely in the center around this...

American Right Wing Ideology and Hate Speech fueling this psychotic attack.

American tech companies allowing this rehtoric to spread 100% unchecked because it generates their income off an active and hateful userbase.

American White Supremacy ideals being adopted by foreign nation's populace in solidarity...

American Bigotry against Islam and Muslims exported globally since 2001...

No matter what, America is always involved and relevant to violence and hatred that takes place on a global scale.
In this case Europe is in the center as well. At least according to the asshole who did the shooting...

I lived in Christchurch 10 years ago and still have some school friends from there. Between this and the two earthquakes that have rocked their community since then, I don't know who's left of the friends I used to have. I remember a Muslim girl who was popular with everyone and wore the Hijab. I don't remember her name. I hope she's alright.

This happened in New Zealand, but the american right is completely at fault here. Again.
Completely? Republicans suck but other countries have bigots in politics. Just look at the other massive thread about the Australian shitbag senator.

Reducing it to just an American far right phenomenon is actually kinda insulting.

I hope society begin to starve out alt rightist group. We need to a far left candidate as the president of the United State to make real changes. All these moderates left candidates would pander a bit to the right.
Yeah exchanging one extreme for the other sure is a good evolution...

Parts of America are currently a breeding ground for white supremacy. Hell, the shooter mentions the POTUS by name in his document...

Edit: Meaning while America shouldn't be the focus of talks, it also shouldn't be left out.

If you want to shutdown sites like 4CHAN and 8CHAN go there to preach extremist Islamic views and recruitment. It seems white nationalist extremist views can somehow fly under the radar.
THIS is my main takeaway. White supremecy organizations aren't taken seriosuly. the FBI follow pan african militant groups who want to police their own communitites, but some kid posting nazi violence gets glossed over. I don't think white people care.

Yeah it's pretty apparent that white fascism is a global scourge at this point, and it's arguably progressed further in some places than in the US (see Hungary).

What in the actual fuck. New Zealand, of all places.

What I find a bit shocking is that he was apparently playing Serb Chetnik songs just before shooting, with Karadzic being one of his idols. Not that it doesn't fit (Breivik did something similar), but the fact that nationalistic fuel from my small region in Europe found root all the way in fucking NEW ZEALAND. The guy doesn't even have anything to do with the Balkans (unless he has ancestry)! It's a bit mindblowing, honestly.

Countries import America's propaganda and bigotry. It's the effect of a country being considered a global leader.

All these right wing peeps like Peterson, Sharpio, and the like have far wide reach and influence due to the web. It is what it is, Clown Pres ascending to power helped push and usher a global right wing influence

And for the record when I said insulting I didnt mean to Americans, I'm American and will fully admit we have huge institutional and personal levels of bigotry. It's insulting to people worldwide who face daily bigotry.

Peterson is Canadian. Other countries had far right wing leaders beforr Trump. I'm not saying America isnt at fault but the original post I quoted was reductionist.

Seems like a misstep for her. Not much point in bringing up the NRA when this happened on the other side of the world. It happened in a country with tighter gun control than the US and mass shooting are incredible rarity.

It is and it isn't. There's a running, "Thoughts and Prayers" meme thats been flying around in US twitter after the last few shootings where hardcore gun politicos throw it up as the detacto response when asked to comment on their hatred of gun regulation. You see the same here with various islamaphobes doing the same with this tragedy.

She's 100% right, its just the right is weaponizing it as her being anti-religion because socialism. But bad timing because of the mosque aspect. But thanks to Trump you can now use 'warmest sympathy', lll

I can't think of any left wing mass shooters, but as soon as there is one, the media will hold onto that one event as the real problem we need to address.

New Zealand's gun control measures don't seem that much tighter than other western countries aside from the US. Gun owners apparently need a license but don't need to register their guns, and there's one gun for every three people. The NRA deserves the shit she's giving them regardless because they would completely kill those regulations in NZ and everywhere else if they could.

Sorta funny seeing Fox's articles. The whole "Hello Brother" thing just sounds weird. Yes you could interpret it that way, but "Salam, Brother" means more than just "hello".

We really need more people in the government & media especially calling these disgusting acts of terror for what they really are. This fucking infestation has spread globally and is taking more innocent lives and must be stopped at all costs asap.

When the man himself points to Donald Trump as inspiration. People can absolutely correlate the two.

True, but placing the primary blame on the US just seems a little irresponsible. Trump having such a prominent place of power in the world stage certainly emboldened white supremacists world wide, I'll agree with that. But these views existed long before. There was Anders Breivik before Trump came around.

I think the question is whose rules do we use and how does it apply. Lets say the New Zealand passes law saying its illegal to have any form of hate speech online without clearly defining what hate speech is. Now right wing Christians and fundamentalist Muslims can both say any talk of pro-life or pro-LGBTQ is hate speech to them. Russia will say any anti-Putin talk is hate speech. Zionists will say any anti-Israel speech is hate speech. You could literally end up with something like ERA banned in New Zealand because hate speech isn't clearly defined.

Ok, lets say you define hate speech as anything that incites violence against another group. Again, it wouldn't be much of a stretch to abuse that easily. There is a thread on the ERA front page about euthanasia. Some extreme pro lifers would consider that inciting violence against the elderly. I'm sure you can easily come up with tons more examples straight from ERA with a weird mindset towards getting the site banned in a "no hate" environment.

I'm sure there are ways to craft laws to get sites shut down when they are clearly hotbeds of violent radicalism but you have to think about it long and hard and do it right, just a knee jerk "LETS SHUT DOWN 8CHAN" movement would probably lead to some extremely bad laws that get abused and it becomes impossible to argue against moving ahead without thinking because the subject is so emotional.

You have to think about all the ways your laws can be abused by someone who doesn't think like you. Also laws that restrict freedom tend to get abused down the road against minorities by the majority, rather than help them - gun control for example started off in the USA as a way to suppress gun ownership by blacks, first passed by Ronald Reagan in 1960s California ironically (also happened 80+ years earlier in the South for the same reason). If you aren't careful any hate speech laws can be used by right wing groups to shut down criticism of them.
I think we are capable of discerning between hate speech (especially those that are actionable) and disagreements about abortion etc.

I also don't think we should be playing both sides here. Unequivocally, places like 8chan should be shutdown and those who use such websites to propagate hate and bigotry should be held responsible imo. Again our laws have to change to adapt to the festering nature of social media and the Internet writ large.

SMH at Fox News with the 'both sides'. The last time I checked, left-wingers aren't fucking killing people on the exponential level that right-wing domestic terrorist-types have been for decades.

With live streaming becoming a more common and easy thing to do I had a fear this was going to happen sooner rather than later. It's the best way for these shooters to let the world know who they are and what they are capable of. I will never watch that video and I advise other people even with a mild curiosity to not. That's the kind of content that you will never forget.

Yeah, this Walid Phares guy seems like a real piece of work.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Walid_Phares#Views_on_Islam
Views on Islam
According to the New York Times, Phares "regularly warns that Muslims aim to take over American institutions and impose Shariah, a legal code based mainly on the Koran that can involve punishments like cutting off the hands of a thief."[37] Phares has also asserted that jihadists are posing as civil rights advocates.[38]

Phares has been described as being part of "the Islamophobia industry, a network of researchers who have warned for many years of the dangers of Islam and were thrilled by Mr. Trump's election."[26] According to Lawrence Pintak of the Atlantic Council and a member of the advisory board for The Media Majlis at Northwestern University in Qatar,[39] Phares is a "card-carrying Islamophobe".[40] Although Phares is often described as a scholar on terrorism, Stanford University terrorism expert Martha Crenshaw stated that Phares was "not in the mainstream as an academic".[22] Duke sociologist Christopher A. Bail describes Phares as an influential figure in the anti-Islam movement.[41]

According to the New York Times, Phares "is regularly accused by Muslim civil rights groups of being Islamophobic and of fear-mongering about the spread of Sharia law."[42]

This is a fucking disgrace. 49 people dead, 8chan still up promoting bullshit and no one taking action to put a stop to it.

Religious studies should be fucking mandatory at this point for elementary curriculum and higher. The only way we can even begin to erode the hatred is to educate children on the different beliefs in the world so they can be better than us.

"No one is asking you to like _______, or convert. We're just asking that you understand and respect."

This is the first thing said at all classes at my university for Religious studies.

I agree with this so much. I am Muslim, raising my daughters as Muslim, but teaching them that our faith is a choice we make, and there are many religions and faiths in the world and people are free to choose what they believe or not believe, that it is a personal choice, and that everybody's choice should be respected. As they grow older, also showing them examples of the hate that takes place when people don't respect this choice, whether the victim is Muslim or Jewish or Hindu or Mormon or Ahmadi, etc...
