In general this in depth look of different rendering techniques with examples is what I always wish DF would do, instead of rote counting stairs and doing side by sides.
I think DF is more popular because of quantity over quality. Not saying they are bad but most people treat them like GODs when it comes to tech analysis. There are many other great options out there.

Thanks for watching, everyone! As always, if you have any questions for me, feel free to post them here and I'll do my best to answer them when I have a free moment.

Also, while I'm immensely grateful for those of you who are able to appreciate this kind of analysis, I do hope that that sentiment can be expressed without animus towards other content creators. Not trying to censor opinions, just trying to keep things positive.

Again, thanks to all of you who appreciate this kind of work :)

Amen! DF and other sites do amazing work and I think these types of video are always so under appreciated given the time taken to put them together.

Keep up the good work guys, will watch this later!

Do you think this is an in-house engine or middle ware? There has been speculation that this is an UE4 game

I'm not sure, but if it was UE4, then some of the parallax problems the game has with the cubemap reflections shouldn't exist, as UE4 has bounding spheres/boxes for reflection probes that capture the environment in finite spaces and correct for parallax errors.

I'm gonna go with in-house on this one. Could be wrong though.

When your graphical analysis goes beyond simple 3D graphics and into the techniques of making clothing.

Hahaha, well I often try to help people understand the motivations behind certain tech or art choices, and NLG definitely did their homework here, so I thought it was worth pointing out 😁

I was hoping Digital Foundry would tackle this, but GameExplain is just as good. Not to mention many many month early! Watching now!

Just to avoid confusion, I'll still be doing a separate analysis of the final build of the game when it releases, and will probably cover the entire evolution of the series at that time. This one's just based on the footage shown so far.

That means they really stepped up their game since their only other HD game was Captain America

I'm tempted to say it's not UE4 based solely on the fact that the development started on Wii U and that console was definitely not UE4 compatible.

Spectacular analysis as always. Really looking forward to Luigi's Mansion 3! Happy that they let it bake longer and didn't release it on Wii U.

I don't understand how this game looks so good.

1080p?? Surely not, just feels like you can have either really high resolution or high fidelity, not both on switch; nice treat this time :P

Although, NLG are god's tbh, remind me of Shinen in that aspect where they squeeze every ounce of power out of a system. Dark moon looked great too.

It's really interesting to see how Nintendo is taking a material focused design approach to many of their first-party games. Between this video and the analysis of Animal Crossing, I've really come to appreciate these design decisions. Thank you brainchild for all the work you put into these vids. It really shows.

I started watching the video before I realized it was brainchild's work! I didn't comment but I followed the BotW thread and your expertise in that thread was already so impressive back then. Keep up your awesome work, it's really interesting to see how developers can achieve such creative details from a technical point of view.

Interesting stuff, but like with most long form GameXplain vids, I cant watch it all in a single sitting. I tapped out around the discussion of the stitching of the "L" on luigi's cap.

Thank your for explaining all these terms in a way where even I can remotely understand what's going on. The game looks indeed gorgeous, that much is clear. One of my most anticipated titels for sure.

Jesus Christ people why the hell does this site have to throw people under the bus for no reason?

This video is great. I appreciate the attention to and level of detail in the video. Brainchild you are great and I look for more of your analysis!

The art, graphics, and animations are unreal in this game. My mind was properly blown when I saw the trailer and other footage this E3.

Best looking game on Switch yet? Best looking Nintendo game yet? Kinda reminds me of how damn good MK8 looked when it came out (and continues to look!).

Great work as always Brainchild!

Thanks again for all of the feedback, everyone!

Yeah, I enjoyed the technical aspect of the video, but I really don't need a video telling me about different types of threading and sowing for clothing.

I can understand why you would feel this way, but I just want to say that whenever I mention details like that, it's always to provide perspective. There's a huge difference between artists who just put generic fabric details onto clothing, and artists who actually do their research and create fabric details that are largely consistent with real life; the latter demonstrates an understanding of visual design at the professional level, which is hard to appreciate without delineating the complexity of the design that motivates their work.

When I talked about textile techniques in real life, I wasn't just bringing up a random factoid, but explaining the extent to which the artists have put effort into making the fabric materials. The satin stitching, for example, is only something an artist familiar with embroidery would try to emulate. Of course, if you don't find that interesting, that's totally fine, but there is a method to the madness.

This is super high quality stuff! Brilliant work as always by brainchild!

Thanks, John! And considering the extremely limited time you (and the rest of the crew) have to work on a given video, it is truly remarkable that you're able to produce such high quality content. That takes real talent. Seriously!

DF Retro will always be my favourite YT series, keep up the great work John!

Definitely one of my favorite YT series, along with yours of course!

Awesome tech analysis! But it's weird to me that they pointed out Wii U version since I assume they started development of LM3 in 2016 after they finished Metroid Federation Force so in like Fall 2016 but at that time they already have Switch devkits.
