This game really tickled my exploration bone. Thereare a ton of areas to explore and the carrot on the stick with trying to figure out how the hell you got there keeps you engaged. Loved every second of this gem.

It is a fantastic game, I've never really played anything like it when it comes to truly feeling submerged in an underwater setting. I don't usually like survival/crafting games, but my son got me to play this after he had been playing around with it for a while on his PC (he was 8 years old at the time). We then played through the entire game together and I loved every minute of it. There's always a tangible goal to work towards, like crafting a new sub to explore deeper, establishing a new forward base etc. etc. and of course the end goal of leaving the planet. The atmosphere is unmatched.

The only negative aspect of the game for me was inventory management - handling the myriad of crafting resources, batteries etc. that you'll eventually have to stockpile and manage to craft all your stuff. My base(s) and Cyclops were filled with lockers to hold all the materials and it became a bit unwieldy.

One of the only survival games I really engaged with, I think because it actually has a loose thread of a story, as well as a definitive ending. It was so goddamn exciting to prep for longer and longer excursions, and daisy chain together all of these resources to prolong my time away from base. And then finally returning to the bright sunny shallows after being in the blackness for longer and longer.

Such a wonderful game. Anyone who is "afraid" to play it... give it a shot. Most areas are very pleasant and placid, and even though it gets scarier deep down, horror is never the game's goal or tone. It's really more of an incidental side-effect of the environments getting more and more alien.

It's a stunning game.

The crafting progression and sense of satisfaction are just sublime.
Some of the endgame unlocks are jaw dropping.

Enjoyed it a lot up until the point I started worrying a certain thing might be near me and jump scare the shit out of me.

I put off playing it because of how bad it ran on PS4 Pro. And Outer Wilds.

Extremely pleased that its getting a Next Gen Upgrade. All I saw online is that there will be a next gen upgrade for the PS4 version. Nothing on Xbox, or many details at all.

I loved it up until I started exploring with the high-end vehicles, then it started to feel less dangerous and more aimless so I fell off of it. I've thought about going back in but I wouldn't know where to begin and I definitely don't want to start over.

Gonna give Below Zero 1.0 a shot though

Extremely curious how the Switch version will run and look like! If it's good, I'll get it on there. Else I'll get it on Steam later down the line when I've got the time.

This is my experience too.

At a certain point there was little to no motivation to continue beyond collecting stuff and building the rest of the remaining blueprints I had. Even with the plot "twist" I just never felt fully compelled to keep going. To make matters worse, like most survival games, it suffers from bad task management systems so if you start it up after not having played for a while it's hard to figure out what you were doing and what you *should* be doing. So you end up just walking around for a few minutes and closing the game.

I know little to nothing about the "sequel" but if there are any new features or anything in the PS5 enhancement I'll think about trying again.

These games give me anxiety and not the exploration part, more so the sustaining yourself part.

I've been meaning to buy it for quite some time now. It sounds awesome but I always end up choosing something else because I'm worried it'll be some semi-aimless time sink of a game.
It has a full-on story and ending. It's an open world survival game that has a finite goal in it, I wouldn't say it's comparable to something like Minecraft at all.

I played it too much in early access before the story was fleshed out and haven't really returned. Also reapers scare the absolute fuck out of me. Found a mod that makes them passive though so I may just do that and deal with things.

Also picked up Below Zero over the holidays since there's a price hike happening in advance of their 1.0 launch. So far that one has a similar, yet very different, vibe.

Fantastic game. I never have felt like I was truly venturing into the unknown like I did with Subnautica. Played the whole thing on PS4 Pro. Need to go back and clean up platinum on PS5 now, but I guess I'll wait for patch. I didn't find the performance that bad on Pro once I copied it over to my internal SSD I installed. Made a huge difference in initial load time and seemed to reduce hitches.

I can't wait to play the next game. I'll jump in day one of 1.0 release. I am avoiding all info on the game until I can play it. The surprises and uncovering things in your own is such a joy/ terror. Oh yeah did I mention Subnautica is also the best horror game ever made?Fucking hell there were so many tense moments.

There are so many games I want to play and replay. But with a PS5, I refuse to start any of them until they have a next gen patch. It's been a slow trickle so far. I need at least 60 FPS on all my games because my PS5 makes all 30 FPS games look like motion blur is disabled with a steady 30 FPS stutter of frames.

not sure why. My PS4 pro played these games just fine and motion blur existed. It's like my LG SM9000 doesn't play right with PS5 30 FPS.

I am completely with you OP. Subnautica is incredible. I finished it last week. I binged it in five or six session. What a glorious time I had. It was exciting, then thrilling, tense as fuck and then really uplifting. I didn't play it in VR. I have the setup, but I just loved playing this wrapped in a blanked on my couch. Gaming comfort food.
Have bought Below Zero already. Will play when 1.0 releases.

Really good game, also played it on PS5 recently. Still needs a bunch of polish and bugfixing stuff. I fell through the world a couple of times and got the save glitch that got patched recently.

I'm hoping Below Zero is more "taking what we learned and making from scratch" moreso than just building off of what they have. I'm worried it'll be even more broken at launch and i'd be best served waiting for a while before getting to it.

Does anyone have a rough idea of how long Below Zero will end up being? Similar to Subnautica or shorter?

How was the pop-in on PS5? It was really terrible on base PS4.

It is still pretty rough. It definitely needs a proper PS5 upgrade/patch to optimize it. It really didn't feel any better than running it on my Pro with a SSD installed. Still lots of hitches with UI and lots of geometry pop up. Maybe the frame rate was a locked 30, nothing notable though.

Death Stranding is a really good touchstone actually, very similar vibes. I think you're going to love it :)

I know it's quite the bump but wanted to follow up on this real quick because I ended up loving the hell out of this game. I started last week and I've been playing it nonstop. The exploration, atmosphere and sense of mystery is totally off the charts...absolutely LOVE this game.

The soundtrack, atmosphere and story are amazing. One of those games you wish you could forget and replay to experience everything all over again.

Are you able to change difficulties down (I don't want to do the food and water demands anymore) but don't want to restart my play as I made it a decent way through. Figured I'd ask here before re-installing the game.

No you can't as far as I know, but the food and water get trivialised fast early enough once you get a purifier and a couple of crop batches.

Its still inventory space and a bit of micro management though.

I had it recommended to me because Outerwilds is one of my favorite games, but I'm not a fan of survival games at all. Or open world(i think its open world?). Outerwilds was very open but also small and tightly designed so it didn't bother me there.

Not really the same thing at all, besides the tone of being alone out there.

Playing this on my PS5 in performance mode on a 4K screen resulted in the worst screen tearing I've ever seen, so I'm really glad they've patched it. It's too good a game to left in such a poor state.

Started it, put it down because didn't like that it was survival-based, but picked it up again two months ago and wow... it is an excellent survival-exploration game. The way it opens up is awesome. I also saw people recommending it for Outer Wilds fans and can see how it makes sense, even though Outer Wilds has puzzle elements.

I almost platinumed it but one trophy was bugged, thankfully it's a fairly early one so I can get it with ease on a new playthrough. But yeah this game is now one of my favorite adventure games. The food/water could become stressful at times so maybe it would be even better without it on that one mode.

I haven't played Outer Wilds so I don't know how it compares but if you aren't a fan of survival games, why not just play the difficulty setting where food/water are disabled? That's what I did when I played it a few months ago and I had an amazing time.

Played this on a whim as Sony gave it away, and its the first game I've ever platinumed. Immediately bought the sequel and did the same. And I'm not someone who generally likes builder games!

Cannot recommend both games enough. Beautiful, unique takes on the genre that constantly had a new surprise or discovery waiting for me, and a storyline I was interested and excited to learn more about.

Anyone seen if that new patch has made it to the Xbox consoles as well?

I got a good way in on my Xbox One, tried to boot it up recently on my Series S and it couldn't find my save. Need that patch really before I bother trying again.
