Last night I defeated the final boss of original game. And although I still have the heft of Royal content to go through I really want to talk about the game, may even get some things cleared up.

This was a journey. 113 hours invested, 7 palaces and Mementos defeated, all confidants maxed. I'm frankly suprised that I'll be getting the platinum once I complete everything but I suppose the list isn't that demanding. This is a game that while I feel deserve's recommendation it does come with a few asterisks attached. Time invested is one of them, but the same could be said for time management as well. For the latter though I must admit that this game is FAR more lenient than I realized, so I think having a decent mindset on what to do is far more valuable than a guide (which I did use for the most part XD )

Gameplay wise this game and its framework does pretty much everything and more. All the small nuances and changes are exemplary and need to be taken in consideration of when making JRPGs in the future. One of my favorite things studios have been doing in the last decade is finding even more ways to streamline the experience. Whether its by fast travel, making unknowns known (fortune reading, upping affinity etc) or by making grinding feel almost non existant - I'm here for it. Palaces and Mementos provide a wonderful dichotomy at face value. The former giving you personalized dungeons and themes while the latter gives you a tastes of dungeons from earlier in the series. I appreciate that investing in your confidants gives you HUGELY tangible rewards. Mowing down weaker enemies, all the boosts and gameplay additions in battle, Fortune everything etc. P4G already upped the stakes but 5R has definitely added more oomph.

With that said, it does make things easier. This is not a downside for me, managing my time is enough challenge for myself in this game. But I do understand others complaints. Also the palaces and their bosses vary in quality.

Storywise....its good but there's room for improvement. I genuinely enjoyed the themes of rebellion and standing up for yourself. I guessed most of the twists and their pancakey ways, but after watching a discussion with Austin Eruption I kind of agree that its not so much of a whodunit for me; more of a howdonit. My suspension of disbelief was a bit thin for the Joker switcheroo. Like on the one hand I like the idea of the party using cognition to their advantage. But does that make it less silly? The game also seems to like the idea of "plot event where really bad thing happens, here's a myriad of cutscenes where you think you chose a wrong option and your watching a bad ending". Felt like it happened with the already mentioned plot twist as well as when mementos melds with the real world.

I'm on the fence with a few characters and plot devices. Some characters kind of go no where after their arc (Ann) and some I just have no affinity for because they came in late (Haru). Some stuff is a bit cringy. Ann using her sexy taunt in battle, Ryuji everything barring his back story, Romancing adult female characters in general. I'm all for adult characters being confidants, but taking it further than friendship just feels offputting. Also, while I do appreciate Atlus USA trying their best with the two gay NPCs it still gives this weird vibe of "lol non-consent is HILARIOUS". I don't care if they paired it down to just being a drag queen and even if I don't really like Ryuji, he was not living for it and it just comes off poorly.

I enjoyed the confidants for the most part. Some I wouldn't write home about. I did enjoy Emperor for the art journey, Councillor for the take on therapy, Futaba for the social anxiety, Moon for the self worth, Justice because of REEEEE, Hanged because of Daddy, and Sojiro because coffee Daddy. Kawakami...if I didn't want to stop the greedy parents or if she didn't give the best abilities it would just be bunk and creepy.

Random thoughts:

-Most stylish game not featuring Dante from Devil May Cry
- The percentage meter that turned the tides. Like I get it, its like a more on the nose device similar to Nier Automatas meta device. It's a little clumsy but I like it.
- Fuck the boss of the fifth palace. I haven't cursed at a game in quite some time.
- VROOM VROOM run over everything is the best grinding I will ever experience. I'm not joking.
- Baton pass, technical and weakness makes it some of the best SMT battle experiences I've had.
- So the god of control....is it a being/treasure ascended by the people into god status or an actual god? The way I inferred it is mementos and the public have been stewing for some time. It gets created by the sum of everyones desire to let go. It then becomes powerful enough to rival Igor. Is that correct?
-December was literally almost a month solid of Meditation because I ran out of stuff to do. This is very surprising because not 5 months earlier I was worried I was running out of time.
- Best music is best.
-Being able to purchase higher level persona is definitely the number one thing I side eyed during my playthrough. Just felt like too much. I did it anyways.
-Getting money was such a thrill in this game. Start off scraping by, then you upgrade the ability to scam buckloads of money from enemies during negotiation. I did that more than anything up until October/November. At that point a daytrip to memento's could have you running over everything until you get 1-2 million yen. I loved it.

Couldn't agree more than Morgana Van is a great way to grind. Such a good game, easily my Game of the Year so far.

Nothing in the Persona fusion mechanics of P5R is more broken than the Network Fusions. The second you unlock them, you can just hop online and fuse anything you have with some dude's custom, flawlessly engineered level 99 Satanael or whatever and manufacture some truly overpowered monstrosities.

Hey I would probably suggest against this because you have a whole bunch of spoiler content coming up that you really don't want spoiled for you.

Some of the most memorable parts of the game are in the third semester content you've yet to experience, so you might actually want to avoid some comments despite the open spoilers.

Just dropping by to say 100% agree with you on the 5th palace boss. I got so annoyed the first time, I literally had to sleep it off so I could come back the next night with a clear head and a new strategy... which worked, but still took me like an hour to actually beat the boss. Not my proudest gaming moment.

Edit: But with that said, love the game as a whole. Interested to see what you think of the bonus content you are coming up on. The game isn't quite as high on my favorite games list as P4G but it's easily top 15 for me.

it sits at the best-rated game this year thus far (on opencritic and metacritic) for a reason

I somehow managed to trash him on my second attempt after being utterly flabbergasted by what they had done to the fight on my first attempt. I went to great lengths to fuse appropriate Personas for that fight on the second go, but to this day, I'm not sure if I just got lucky or what.

Spot on with a lot of this - the hand-crafted palaces was my favorite thing in P5. To me, the fifth palace is the weakest part of the game - everything from Hamu to the boss to the design - but the sixth palace more than made up for it.

I actually didn't get much value out of the network fusions. Abilities to transfer are very limited and fusing my own during an alarm always got me more than enough to get the job done.

Anyway, you are still facing the best part of the game imo. The third semester is the best way you could end this game. I cried when I was done.

Until the third semster I was like: I really really like this game, but I'm glad when I'm done so I can go and play some other games.
After finishing the Royal part I was like: Can I just replay this?

I will give my two cents on the added content, since others are. I went into Royal expecting the additions to amount to just a liiittle bit more than were added to Persona 4 Golden, but good god damn is Royal so much better of a definitive edition than Golden. Virtually every change they made (save for that pesky Palace boss) was for the better, and everything in the Third Semester is poignant and thoroughly enjoyable.

I'll play around with the network fusion more during the next segment.

Spoiler's don't really bother me or detract from my experience so its okay :)

It took me a few tries. once one mob retreated I knew it was over.

Another thing that surprised me for better or for worse was boss versions of normal shadows. There's a part of me thats salty because they remove known weaknesses, but on the other hand I understand that I would get the same result with some proper fusing.

Finished it a few days ago after giving up on the original P5. Such a massive improvement in basically every aspect. Less grindy, more time to do everything, new very enjoyable characters... I loved it. One of my favorite JRPGs of all time and an unforgettable experience.

And the soundtrack is still godlike. Some of the new tracks are so, so good.

I love P5R but it's not honestly fair to see it as a game of the year candidate. It's kind of like a directors cut.
Even so, it's a new title that stands on equal footing with everything else released in 2020. Quality is quality.

For me I feel that enough has changed and added to warrant it to be atleast discussed. Like at the end of the year I would be very surprised to see Giantbomb NOT talk about it in their JRPG category. That said it being a re-release would most likely keep the reigns in if that makes sense.

I'm just sad I can't post some of the songs they added for the Third Semester, because... what the fuck, practically every piece of music they added for that is top-tier.

Sheesh you haven't even played the best part of the game yet.

The last section of the game pushed it from GOTY status to all time status.

This thread kind of makes me want to play it again, and I've already clocked, like, 350-400+ hours on this game across both its editions.

There's no reason this shouldn't be eligible for GOTY considerations, it's a very thorough overhaul of the base game, veering closer to being a remake than a rerelease

Going through it now and have just got to the Casino Palace. I loved P5 so it's a trip down memory lane, but I do wish that more of the new content was front loaded. Otherwise the only noticeable differences are the enhanced Velvet Room, Will Seeds, 2 new Confidants, a couple anime cutscenes, and more freedom after school.

Still, I'm excited for the additional semester when I get there in 20 hours... haha.

I tend to be hard on this game because it really falls short respective to the impression and pizazz it sets up early on, and at times even compromises its themes for the sake of anime hijinks, but I can't deny how fun it is and how engaged I am with its systems. Other than that, Thieves' Den is one of my favorite "extras section" of any game. And Baal is actually viable now, and they gave Ariadne (one of my favorite mythological figures) a fun Trait, so I appreciate that.

Also, it's not that important, but I'm kinda disappointed that, other than Joker, the cast doesn't really have a real thematic or character resonance with their Personas. Haru's is Milady because she's an ojou-sama with a trash fiancée and... that's it. Makoto's is Pope Joan because... who cares she's a freaking motorcycle. It's just surprising considering how thoughtfully the game considered which enemies to put in which Palaces.

I just finished the whole thing last night, and agree with most of what you're saying. The degree to which they've streamlined it is kind of amazing, having a 120+ RPG featuring a huge randomly generated dungeon and dozens of side activities that doesn't ever really feel bogged down. And yeah, the rewards for each confidant feel genuinely impactful instead of just stat boosts. They feel much less like here's a random person you bumped into on the street who has a bit of a story to them, and more like people who really are pursuing for specific skills or because they actually intersect with the main plot somewhere interesting The only other thing I would want is for the game to somehow signal up front "this confidant is going to get you combat skills vs exploration skills versus access to new merchandise versus time management skills", some sort of categorization system, since they really do have the time management aspect of the game pretty well under control, but it requires you to know that you're supposed to rush Kawakami and Chihaya. But, if you do, the game actually allows you to have the time to enjoy all their side content instead of having to constantly focus max out your confidant and social skill grinding.

I also agree with you how the story is different, but I think I like how this story works better than the simpler whodunnit mystery of 4. You kind of know who the bad guy is the whole time in this one, but the sort of government conspiracy and cover-up of scientific research and all that gives it a cool feel, a bit more like the sort of evil corporation stuff that was in 3. It also felt like it allowed more of the cast to directly intersect with the core story line. In 4 you recruit each character in a fairly isolated chapter, and then they don't really have much connection to the main plot after that, besides being brought into the crew to try to investigate the next targeted victim. And 5 still has some of that — Yusuke stands out as a character you recruit in a mission that doesn't connect much to the main plot and who is just sort of hanging out after that — but you also have things like how Futaba and Sojiro's backstory connects to the psience research, Makoto connects to Sae and the investigation against you, Haru's plot around her dad fleshes out the mental shutdown stuff.

Also agree with the game being a bit too much on the perviness and dating adults. Even among the kids, romancing Futaba feels kind of gross after the degree the storyline with her and Sojiro builds you up as a surrogate brother. And really I don't think I would have felt constrained in romance choices if it just was Ann/Makoto/Haru/Hifumi/Yoshizawa. That would still be a perfectly fine range. And I actually really like Kawakami and Takemi and Ohya and all them as characters, it just feels weird that suddenly at the end of each one the high school boy can me like "you're hot, miss" and suddenly she'll be overcome with boy lust. And then yeah, the way the game is just constantly willing to sexualize Ann. It worked for a bit when they really committed to it with the Kamoshida plot, but when they so quickly went back to the well after that with the Yusuke nude modeling stuff was really a low point in the game for me. I ended up relieved when her character was sort of allowed to fade into the background as Makoto and Futaba really took center stage as the core members of the team. And then there's just the way that her "true self" in the Metaverse is apparently this dominatrix fantasy full of romance imagery when her character through all its development never really seems particularly romantic or using her sexuality to manipulate or control, at least not happily. It's always sort of begrudgingly. She seems to mostly resent her looks, outside of a professional capacity as a model, but no, your true self is a leather suit with a tit window and posing with your ass out at all times. It felt like the art team and writing team just had really different views of the character. And Morgana's constant obsession with her both never really gels with anything else you learn about Morgana's nature, and is a sour note in what had otherwise been a step up from Teddie as far as weird mascot characters for these games go.

Is it really lttp when it's a 100+ hour game that only came out 3 months ago? I got it near launch and I'm still chipping away at it (7th palace).

you are literally still missing the best part of the story and the best villain in ATLUS history. The finale that ATLUS added isn't just one extra dungeon, it's one of the best written characters in SMT history, it gets even better

In at about 110hrs normal version and got to the point where mementos merged with the real world. I goofed halfway up the tower and got hit with back-to-back critical and one-shot by an enemy and had to start all the way over at the bottom. Furans saved me with one final guard, but they got me right after that. It was that dancing red lady shadow. Had to put the game down for a bit because that ruined my enthusiasm. I don't want to do a repeat of Persona 4, so building up muster to start again.

Ok! So I have now completed the third semester and got the platinum.

Maruki himself is a great villain, especially compared to most of the antagonists in this game. I enjoyed his motive, fully believed his background and how his interactions with the cast molded him to his current form. I enjoyed the semi-gray area, how he wasn't truly evil and felt he was right in his path.

Yoshizawa...I like her and don't. I appreciate her character arc and forcing herself to face her demons. I chose her as my romantic interest and if I hadn't i'm sure that would have made her higher rank interactions that more cringeworthy. That said, I'm disappointed that she feels so tacked on for the final bit in the ending cut. I'm sure it would've made a little more sense if you HADN'T romanced her, just feels a bit disjointed.

And if her writing is anything to go by, romance in general in this game was just....yikes. Or maybe passable since we are dealing with kids and kids tend to say dumb stuff like this. But that doesn't excuse the adults you romance acting like the way they do. Just overall felt cringey and waifu bait.

The FF Button is a god send. I only say this due to the amount of filler conversation that this game can throw at you that doesn't have much meaning to the plot or is only saying the same thing over and over again. Waking everyone up to the altered reality, the conversations that lead to their 3rd persona evolution, the...chocolate scene for each and every female character in the game. It's like you can just smell the empty words in the air and hope that fast forward can end your pain a little faster.

Its still a game I love, but for all that it does to make the genre more accessible and streamlined I feel like I can only recommend it with heavy asterisks.
