Wanted to forward this by saying Im viewing this kids book through the eyes of an adult. Also may be a Potter comparison or 2. Also also, I really enjoyed the book as I am a big fan of Greek Mythology.
After years of hearing about the series and never reading it for some reason I finally took the internets advice and did so.
Really good. And so different from the film WOW!
I really liked that the Gods actually portrayed as Gods. Very egocentric. Beings that know they are above humans. I liked all the Greek Myth stuff thrown in here and there and even stuff like Houdini was a demi-god. And so was Washington. Etc. Characters where fun. Loved the world building and ancient creatures in modern situations (like Medusa).
Stuff I wasnt super keen on. Why not call the Camp, Camp Hero or Camp Demi-God? Half-Blood is just... bad.
What kind of bad luck do you have to have to randomly run into Medusa or an enchanted casino?
What was that fight with Ares? Ares the literal God of War can't take out a 12 year old? Please.
Speaking of 12 year olds, not one of the kids in this book act like kids. I can see why in the film they aged them to like 16. I hope the tv show does the same. I'll hand it to Potter, they acted like kids.
What stops Hades or Zeus from going into Tartarus and fucking Cronos up again? Voldemort worked because no one knew where he was. Cronos in in custody of Hades. He's the evil mastermind behind it all and the Gods know it... so... ?
Also, Luke decides to end the world because he got 1 lame quest? I was thinking it might be daddy issues since most of the gods have kids and then never talk to them etc. And if he was trying to kill Percy why not do it? He instead makes a death trap that Percy falls into and then walks away expecting it to work..... or just kill him with that sword you have there, Luke? Just....
They train the kids in swords and shields etc, why not guns? Why send the kids to fight a Hydra with a sword when a grenade launcher works even better.
Perhaps a lot of this is explained it later novels, which I plan to read. But yeah, fun book. Be interesting to see how things age like in the Potter books which got more serious and darker the older the audience and characters got.
