I only recently got into Dragon Quest about a couple years ago. DQ11 was my first game in the series (unless you count Builders), and it was exactly the sort of RPG I love. I had, however, bought DQ8 nearly three years ago, a few months after it released on the 3DS, but though I had every intention of playing it, I just never got around to it. Recently, I've been in the mood of a long, sweeping JRPG (Xenoblade DE, I know, I'll get to that too eventually). I was thinking of buying DQ11S and going through that game again, but then I figured I'd just play DQ8.

My impressions so far are very positive (to put it mildly) but let's begin with some not-so-positive stuff first (that doesn't necessarily have anything to do with the game itself):

The moment I started playing it, I remembered why I had held off on giving it a go for so long- not because of the game, but because of the system I own it on. I've been playing DQ8 for over a week, and my hands have not stopped hurting. The console is small (I have an OG 3DS and returning to it after so long feels weird) and having to move the camera with the shoulder buttons is literally painful (it doesn't help that the L button on my 3DS doesn't always work).

But then as I played more and made myself come to terms with the hardware so that I could properly enjoy the software, I realized that I should not have waited so long to play this absolute gem. DQ8 is unbelievably good. Like DQ11 (which is the only watermark I have for DQ games right now), it never tries to reinvent the wheel, but it has a ridiculously expert understanding of the JRPG genre and what makes it tick. The combat is simple but addictive, and I really like the tension system. I especially love making use of it in conjunction with buffs and debuffs during boss fights; it allows me to actually strategize, and prevents battles from become the mindless "repeatedly press A to win" affair that turn-based battles can so easily become. Hell, I even love grinding (the sped up battles really help out on that front).

I'm also really, really enjoying the story. It's not taking itself too seriously, there's plenty of room for levity, the characters are great, and I'm surprised at how engaging I'm finding it. I love the little lore drops here and there, whether that's from NPCs or from reading books. I love what every character has to say. I love how the story tantalizingly hints at things to come but knows exactly when to stop and let the player hang (and for how long). I love how every new place I visit feels like it's bursting with identity and charm. Pickham in particular was great, and I just arrived at Baccarat, where I imagine I'll be spending a lot of time, thanks mostly to the casino (I ignored the casino in Pickham, because sketch). The towns don't seem to have the grandeur and flair of the towns in DQ11 (which are flat-out the best towns I've ever seen in any game), but they're still really good (and I'm hoping they'll continue to get better as I make progress).

I'm also really liking the more open world design of the game. Hunting for mini-medals is fun (not surprising, since that was one of my favourite things to do in 11), I love toying around with the alchemy pot, and even though the rewards I get from Cameron's Codex have all sucked without exception, I still open up the challenges every time I enter a new region to see what's next on the list. Outside of the open world, the dungeons have also been really good so far. The last couple of dungeons have been big and winding enough that exploring every cranny takes a while, and I'm hooked to finding every piece of treasure in every dungeon that I enter.

One thing I'm finding a little disappointing is how few party members there seem to be in the game. Since Angelo, there's been no one, and having just four party members has left me yearning for many more (especially since I subconsciously keep comparing the game to 11, which had only about eighteen gajillion party members). If there are more on the way, don't tell me who they are or when they will arrive- maybe just tell me "it'll get better" or something like that (if you want to tell me anything, that is).

So yep. 20 hours in, absolutely loving it, feels very much like DQ11 (or the other way around, which, from what I understand, was very much the point when SE were working on 11).

TLDR: Shouldn't have waited so long to play this gem, but glad I'm in it now, but the 3DS is bad and my hands hurt.

Yangus is the best.

Some party members were added in the 3DS version, so there's that.

It's an amazing game and right up there with DQ11 as the best in the franchise.

DQ11 is a more typical hero's journey tale, whereas DQ8 is a whimsical fairy tale adventure. Both of them have their own vibe and DQ8 is a lot more chill than 11, which can be relaxing. I flipflop on which game I think has the better story/characters.

Also the first JRPG I can recall playing that had a to-scale overworld instead of either shrinking everything or having linear corridors between areas.

It's waaaaay better than DQ11. DQ11 is 1/3 too long for its own sake and tries a bit too hard to be "quirky" at times.

DQ8 is fantastic! I'm glad you're enjoying it.

The 3DS version is far from ideal IMO, but if you can get past the long loadings and barely readable text, it's still DQ8, and it's great.

Keep the rest of the series on your radar, the older DQs are all worth playing (especially 3, 4 and 5).

Dragon quest at its best is my happy place, which is ironic because when shit goes wrong I usually feel it more because of how the tone builds on emotions

I think the sped up battles are a lot nicer with the 3DS version. Even at the default speed.

DQ VIII and XI are the only two games in the (mainline) series that I have not completed.
Strangely, I think the improved graphics actually turn me off of the games for some reason. I realize how ridiculous that sounds.

I've owned VIII since the day it came out on PS2 (and I never even touched the Final Fantasy demo), I restarted it more times than I can count across PS2, iOS (bleh), and 3DS, but the game just hasn't held me so far.

One day... Probably the day after I finally finish Secret of Mana, my other gaming white whale.

Best game in the series. I feel your pain with handhelds. The stylus saved my hands when I played 9. I recommend emulating the PS2 version honestly. It is gorgeous at 1080.

It is one of the best Dragon Quest games. Which is odd to say in some ways as it deviates in the skill/job system and I didn't care for the name change (away from western names like hurt, hurtmore, hurtmost, etc, which I understand the reasoning, just miss it) but otherwise the game play, the story, stellar.

Was the game I got a PS2 for and I loved it, powered through it.

Dragon Quest 8 is really good. In many ways, such as soundtrack or battle system, I would outright argue it's superior to 11, honestly.
Play 5 next.

One thing you can try is playing Dragon Quest 11 S in 2D mode, so you are functionally playing a 16-bit RPG.

This game made me break my 3ds in anger. I love it that much.

Surely it can't be its beginning then? Most dragon quests have a much more sluggish beginning, I was happy with how I breezed from dungeon to exposition back to dungeon in the first few hours of 8. Then things open up a bit so it gets way better quickly.

Yeah, I did try that a bit—and I actually held off on playing the PS4 version that I bought day 1 in anticipation for the Switch version. I cruised through the demo on Switch but then haven't played much beyond that.

My favorite DQ is the original VII on PS1, so I think maybe I am just a weirdo.

Anyway, I will beat both VIII and XI eventually, and as a huge fan of the series I am actually really happy to have those two games in my backlog.

DQ8 has better pacing and story, and the cast of characters between the two games are equally strong. DQ8 is the more consistent experience but DQ11 has higher highs and lower lows. DQ11 made me cry at one point, but sometimes I would laugh so hard. Music in DQ8 is better no doubt. It's really down to personal preference, but one thing that seals the deal for me in favor of DQ11 is the difficulty. DQ11 nailed it with the stronger enemy mode, making gameplay so much fun even though it's based on the same classic system, the challenge especially during boss battles made it intense. DQ8 is too lacking in challenge, so gameplay was kind of eh.

Need to get back to VIII. I started? Got to the chapel where you talk to Angelo but that was like 8 months ago. Life got in the way and I don't remember any of the story. Is there a way to see what has happened so far in the game when I jump back in?

What of DQ8's battle system was superior to 11? I thought it was really mediocre with little difficulty. 11's draconian hard mode made the combat more rewarding demanding actual buffs, debuffs, tactics in combat, like SMT games where regular encounters are also no pushover.

Dragon Quests are entry-level rpgs, they're not supposed to be challenging. That said, 8 can still provide a fun challenge if you don't grind at your first inconvenience, e.g. beating dhoulmagus without having learned multiheal

In terms of the actual battle mechanics? I like the skill points level system far more than I like Character Builder, and I think Tension as a mechanic allows for far more strategic planning and direct control handed to the player, compared to Pep, which I really enjoy because of how quirky and spontaneous it can be, but otherwise adds an element of randomness to battles.

Yep, eyeing 5 after this one.

Unfortunately I don't think there's a glossary or recap feature in the game (somebody correct me if I'm wrong though).

OP are you THE gaming bolt voice?

Best voice in the gaming media alongside Trailer Jones.
Nope, I'm a writer, I don't do VO. Thanks though, I'll be sure to pass on the message!

I agree with you that 3DS hurting your hand, and I'm using 3DS XL.
The best addition 3DS for me is (ending spoiler)
you can marry Jessica and it's surprisingly very elaborate and sweet.

3ds version is the definitive one, but playing on an OG 3ds is quite a nightmare, I agree (though any other model is more than fine)
Also, about the party members, if you want to know
there are two more playable characters which have been introduced in this version (one of the reasons which DQVIII3DS is better)
One is Red and will join the party automatically at a later point
The other is Morrie and you need to complete the Arena Monster at the highest rank to get
Usually my final party was Hero-Angelo-Jessica-Red, her fan is too good

I went into XI expecting more of this but left massively disappointed.

Maybe I like the cast more.

Glad you're enjoying it, but the OG 3DS is just no way to play huge games like that. Get an OG 2DS or a N2DS XL. Your hands will thank you.

Hey everyone. Just finished up with the main game on 3ds. Has anyone played the post game for 3ds? Is it worth it or is it just a dungeon that has no story? I'll play it if there's more story, but I have no interest in a challenge mode dungeon.

Absolutely worth playing the post game.

I have mixed feelings in dq8. Coming off of DQ7 back in 2005, it felt like a huge step back in the game play. Plus it was the first game in the series with new localizations. Even so I still like ir.

I haven't played the 3DS version, but assuming the post-game is largely the same as the original's, it's definitely worth it.
