I think its one of the best ps exclusives and one of the best open world games i've played. The progression was really satisfying.

It has a lot of flaws and it's very average in some aspects, but it was fun to play and I enjoyed my time with it.

It's fine. I finished it a few months ago as well. It does a few things quite well, such as traversing with your motorbike and taking on all the hordes. However, everything else is a bit too by-the-numbers for me.

It's the Sony exclusive I've spent the most time with this generation and also the only exclusive I've competed on a NG+ run too.

I just hope there is a direct sequel because I'm itchy tasty for more zombie horde and scavenging motorbike action.

I've had so much fun with it and if it weren't for the way the game was reviewed I would have bought it earlier.
I ended up getting it months after release, used for £30. A very fair price but I honestly wish I had of bought a brand new copy.

It's an incredibly inconsistent, messy game that I ultimately came to like.

Jank is present in all aspects of the game - the plot/writing (esp. the first 10 hours), the cutscene transitions, dialogue clipping constantly in open world, some missions having ridiculously silly fail states (simple walk and talk sections having more strict failstates than gigantic horde takedowns is pretty funny), dodgy framerate (fixed by PS5), bugs (probably fixed by patches by now) and pacing (the game gets going hard after the first 2 camps but it stumbles right before the finish line)

hell, the best content in the game, the hordes arent officially marked as an activity until waaay later in the game which is just... really silly.

but, ultimately the gameplay is fun, both on foot and on bike, the setting is very atmospheric and beatiful, the weather system is aces, especially the way snow actually gathers on surfaces (can this become the norm for current gen? The crew 2 does it also, not as sophisticated as in days gone, but damn it's really impressive), and the characters, as dumb and weird they may seem at first are actually really likable by the end.

at the best of times it reminds me a lot of modern-time Red Dead, where your horse is replaced by a bike. And given that RDR games are my favorite, this is a very good thing. It's quite funny because one of the worst moments in the game happens early on where the game tries to have its "Red Dead Mexico" moment faaar too early and completely unearned, but as you progress, it actually does eventually earn that moment in another section.

Even with all of its flaws, its easily the best sony open world game imo. If I had to pick between a sequel to HZD, Days Gone, Spiderman, GoT then I'd pick Days Gone in a heartbeat. I recognize I'm in the absolute minority with this opinion, but as rough and clunky DG can be, it is absolutely packed with fantastic ideas, great mechanics and a very well utilized open world that, despite having a lot of repetative activities like all others, manages to sustain its intensity for much longer than most games. The progression curve is very well done.

Already posted this in another thread, but I fucking love the gunplay.

I really enjoyed the combat, and the gameplay generally was good (the bike is fun to drive).

But the story, characters and dialogue are awful, to the point I just played the game skipping every cutscene from about 5 hours in. The story is so obvious and eye-rollingly bad I just wanted to enjoy the good bits.

It is one of the very best Sony first party games, imo. I absolutely loved the time I spent playing this on PS4 when it came out. Such a great world design with super fun combat. I really liked the player power progression where you started out with weak weapons that could hardly shoot straight and you end up as a one man horde destroyer. I really liked the story and characters as well. Just overall an amazing game.

Tbh i fully believe one of the biggest reasons it got so shat on at release despite the okay reviews was the amount of pre-release press from youtubers and game journalists taking scenes way out of context and the like and then people online running with it going "lolololol game trash", church scene being a good example. The gaming community and industry sometimes just decide to really hate on a game for the hell of it.

but anyways, i enjoyed it a lot. It was indeed very buggy though, and suffered from some typical open world bloat, combined with a kinda slow start in the narrative, tho i get what they were going for there.

edit: i also just vibed super hard with the whole oregon forests and nature yeehaw vibe it had. 100% my shit.

Really enjoyed the game and one of my top 3 PS4 games overall.

Things I'd improve in a sequel:

Direction - cut scenes felt jarring at some times.
Dialog - some felt out of place like some last minute cuts had happened. Some dialogue also mentioned being in a place for the first time even though I'd already been there before.

Loved the story overall and the moment to moment gameplay was ace.

Played the whole thing on PS5 and it was a really nice surprise. Excellent environments, sound, and control. Some of the characters were really fun to follow, and the overarching story had my attention.

Honestly a really good game! I'd be there day one for a sequel.

Just started it, I will say this, really enjoying the voice acting of the main characters so far. Kinda refreshing at the moment to feel that it stands out from the norm. Maybe it is just me.

I never completed the game, but I absolutely loved playing it when I had a PS4. I'm still unsure about getting a PS5. But if I do, Days Gone will be a purchase from me.

I couldn't get in to it and dropped it super early. Hated the douchey typical lead character, the world and gameplay just felt like autopilot open world stuff. I gave it a go, but it didn't do anything to change my mind on why I avoid almost all big budget Western releases since the PS3 days, they're just doing things that aren't to my taste.

Yea you can tell even more that the choice mechanic was cut in some scenes

This was my huge issue with the game. It was the first thing we saw about the game and you aren't equipped to do it until the game is almost over. And it's a looong game.

I started playing recently too since it's in the ps5 game collection. Runs like a dream now for what it's worth.

Combat feels fine. I like the world, the characters are so-so, the mechanics in their entirety are inoffensive but also not exactly top notch. I am way too early in to opine on the story.

Digging it so far. If one never played prior to getting a ps5, I've played far, far worse "free" ps+ games. This is feels like a gift compared to some of them.

It was a great game, although stretched out a little too far for my taste. Especially the first half of the game.

I couldn't disagree more. Days Gone is not Dead Rising. If you wanted that level of absurdity from the very beginning, you had the wrong expectations. The skill/weapons progression is legit fantastic.

And you seriously missed out if you never enjoyed the experience of shitting your pants stumbling across a roaming horde in the early-game. I appreciated that the hordes remained unmarked and had a good time hunting the remaining ones down at the end of the game.

How about that dynamic weather change. Early on in the game you have rain, which looks great but when it stops you notice it's left puddles and wet mud.

Then later when you are riding to colder regions it starts to snow. And subtly and completely seamlessly the whole world is covered in snow, the bike makes tracks in the snow, your clothes are sprinkled with snow flakes.

It's so impressive. I can't even remember any linear games doing it and this is an openworld game. Usually you have the snow areas and the non-snow areas. In Days Gone a whole region changes while you are driving though it at speed! It's literally making a snow level before your eyes.

One of the most impressive visual feats of the last generation.

I thought it was a good, but flawed 7/10 game.

It took too long to get going. It didn't respect the gamers' time, which is one of my personal top annoyances with modern games. Beyond that, it didn't do anything "wrong", but it just felt unfocused. It comes across as three different takes on the same story, using the same engine.

The first third of the game felt like survival-horror.
The second third of the game felt like 3rd-person action.
The final third felt like an end-game open world, where you are over-powered, and could finally have some fun with all of the systems that are in place. Zombies no longer feel like a threat--the challenge is self-imposed in choosing how you go about doing what it is you have to do. (Trying not to spoil anything.)

I am in no hurry to revisit this game or its lore, but I am confident that the Bend Studio learned a ton, and I think their next project will be better for it.

Man, just completed it, and loved it all. I swear, no game has grabbed me like that in a while. I love the acting, writing, AI mechanics, story, graphics, pretty much everything. I was playing HARD and really appreciated that level of difficulty. Even in the end, I tried my best to use all my tools at my disposal to get rid of hordes.

I remember reading threads on DAYS GONE back in the day and remember all the negativity people said about it and after finishing it, I can't wrap my head around any of the perceived faults people had with it. I just don't see it.

At times I honestly felt I liked the environment better in DAYS GONE then say in RDR2. What an impressive feat.

I think what mattered the most is playing this on the PS5. I don't think I would liked it as much if I played this on my PS4. 60FPS or bust.

Oh that's easy...most of those people hadn't actually played it.

There are some legitimate gripes with the game, especially at launch with performance issues. But a lot of the negativity around launch came from not wanting to like a white motorcycle riding male protagonist. Was not a great mainstream character for 2019. Also, they watched a scene out of context and judged the game based solely on that.

I know exactly which scene you are talking about and the scene later on that explains it.

Regardless, I am looking forward to a DAYS GONE 2 if it shows up. I will get that on launch dammit!

Another impressive aspect of the game is the detailed ground/floor textures.
it's really mind blowing and truly impressive.
visually days gone is one of the most impressive games ever made.
It's truly underrated in this aspect.
characters are super detailed to...
I never understood why days gone never is mentioned when people talk about best visuals in game.
there's so many amazing things in this game visually speaking.

Yeah, I also gave this game a shot on PS5 and really enjoyed it. Just finished the story last weekend.

My only real gripe was that I wished the Trust progression system was broken into smaller tiers.
It is kind of a pain to get to Tier 3 with some camps without doing a ton of the side content, and since everything is divvyed between just three tiers,
It feels very slow to get new guns and such at times.

The open world was well designed and I really liked the weather cycle effects especially. Riding around on the bike felt amazing and
the gunplay/combat was basically up to part with most 1st part Sony titles IMO.

Definitely a solid 8/10 game in my book, at least on PS5.

it's one of sony's best games last gen. got shit on both here and in the media for absolutely no reason

it's wild, I enjoyed the 80ish hours I spent with this all the way through and wanted more. with ghost of tsushima, I was burnt out on it by the time act 2 hit. it was a chore to finish.

This doesn't really make sense to me. It feels like someone complaining that a Zelda game doesn't throw you right up against Ganon in the first hour of the game.
The Hordes felt like the real bosses of the game and it keeps them mostly gated off until you are better equipped to deal with them (napalm, machine guns, remote bombs, etc.) which is basically game design 101.

I mean I guess you could just say "Well just give us all the cool toys right from the start!" but that kinda defeats the purpose of the game trying to make you feel like a scrappy survivor who has to scavenge scrap to stay alive.

I like the world in this game, feels calming to ride your bike through it. The game also looks really stunning on PS5.
Overall the enemy and quest structure feels very repetitive. Spying on Neros, liberating camps, driving through towns killing freakers - there is not much variety and most of it feels samey.
There are only a few enemy types and the human AI is as dumb as the dead freakers.
I like the leveling and survival aspects although I feel quite overpowered. That wasn't the case the first hours, but after finding a good gun, nothing really stops you.
Story and characters are ok, nothing special.
Killing hoardes is intense and really fun, but for a second iteration of the game I would like more overall variety.
I am quite far in the game I believe and would rate it a 8/10.

Played this back on the PS4 Pro and didn't like it at all, playing on PS5 now and getting through the story now. I think it's a 7/10 game so far characters are slowly starting to grow on me. But yeah the combat is very "okay". But I'm enjoying it a lot more now for sure.

In case people did not watch the last Digital Foundry video on Days Gone on PS5. The 60fps is pretty much locked. Even when confronted with the biggest hordes it only drops a few frames. 300 enemies on screen. Crazy.

Did they also fix the boring character writing and god awful pacing? It didn't respected my time at all.

The only redeeming thing I found where the visuals and the slight systemic stuff like freakers patrolling at night, hiding during the day.

I tried this last weekend and I really didn't like any of it for the first hour or so. I'm glad people enjoy it, but for me the setting is overdone, the characters are like the opposite of what I'm into. The whole americana vibe is just not for me. On top of that the gameplay felt rough somehow so it just didn't click.

Loved it. The reviews made me doubt it at first. So I rented it and after a day I had to buy it. Currently playing NG+. There is a lot of room for improvement. The performance on PS4 was bad at points. But I think a proper sequel could be amazing.

It's a mediocre, very repetitive game with an enjoyable open world environment and decent story. Also the "boss" fights are ludicrously clunky and poorly designed.

I'm shocked how much I am loving this so far, mind you I'm only several hours in and haven't yet had the balls to take on a horde. But have been doing missions and taking down ambush camps...really really digging it.

Btw apart from the super smooth 60fps. I gotta keep saying, the PS5 UI in regards to game capture is so , SO dam great... Love how you can pretty much capture a video, scroll through gallery, play it back in a window, edit, upload, smooth as hell and never once be taken away from the game at all, it's all in a overlay and it never highjacks the screen from the game. Sony nail that so well

Most importantly, you'd lose that element of surprise if hordes were marked and you knew where to expect them. Some of the best moments in the game is randomly stumbling into a horde when you didn't see it coming.

I'd bet this is the reason why they were left unmarked until near the end.
