Full disclosure: I had never played a Civilization game before(nor had crack)

a couple of friends convinced me to get it during the summer sale(Civ 6 Platinum).

We started a few saves so I could get the ropes, then started a game with a mod that uses the real world locations, and I went with Korea.

JESUS CHRIST what's wrong with this fucking game. It's stuff like, we start playing at 7pm then I look outside and it's suddenly 4am.
And that happened TWO DAYS IN A ROW.

I don't know how to explain it, it's been ages since something like this happened to me. And then I keep reading people saying that CIV6 is actually bad compared to the others? That's some crazy shit.

So yeah that's it, tomorrow is a holiday and all I can think of is how I'm going to spend the entire night playing it with my friends. Any tips or mods you peeps wanna share?

If you were to make a pie chart of my steam play time, Civilization would be Pac Man

This is precisely why that free copy of Civ III I got from somewhere hasn't been installed. I've seen it with my friends in the past. I've read stories.

I don't want it to happen to me.

Yep, that's normal. It's going to happen again.

Every Civ is worse than the one before, it's like the Zelda cycle or something.

Midgar, With Love
I play on the slowest possible speed, too. My individual playthroughs wind up hella long because of that. But I savor every bite.

CIV VI on Switch is the best road trip game that exists imo.

I remember I had a bootleg copy of Civ 3 that my roommates got their hands on during undergrad in our student house circa 2004. It was like a virus that ravaged through the entire house, and everyone came out of it looking like a POW. Civ has some magic to it.

edit: OP, the latest Retronauts podcast is half about Civ. If you're interested, Shivam Bhatt does a great job going over what made the first Civ special.

Lmao not many titles are as true as this one, I lose entire weekends to this game sometimes. I literally uninstall it now so I don't play it too much.

Civ5 had me completely addicted for a while. First time a game like this has ever done that to me! This thread makes me want to hop back in. :)

Civ 6 is great and all but nothing beats the pleasure of completing Leonardo's Workshop before everyone and having auto unit upgrades for the rest of the game (until Automobile) in Civ 2. Nobody could stand against my Riflemen!

Civ games in general start off pretty iffy but end up being "feature complete" after a couple expansions - since you got Platinum you're skipping those interim years where stuff was iffier. There's still some issues, but mostly stuff that only enthusiasts notice or care about.

But yeah it's pretty crazy - I usually binge for a while, get burned out, and come back a few months later. I think the secret is that there's always so much going on. You turn it off when you get to turn 200 - but, well, that wonder is gonna be finished in 4 turns, may as well see how that turns out. Then, well, it's only a couple techs until the next era. Whoops, got invaded by the Aztecs, let's at least get that sorted out. And so on and so on and so on.

Nah, Civ is like weed, it does get you high, but over time you get used to it and you realise that it is too shallow.

Stellaris and Vicky 2 is fucking heroin.

(Disclaimer: This is a joke, I don't know shit about drugs)

Civ (in particular, Civ V) has such a funny loop to it. I've put in hundreds of hours, and each game is the same. I kick it off thinking "hmm, ok, just going through the motions" and an hour later I'm conducting an eight-city orchestra while plotting my vengeance on opposing civilizations for having the audacity to complete a wonder that I dedicated valuable turns towards building.

Yes Civilization are phenomenal games, I've played 2, 4 and 6 so much over the years. I also love just how many youtube videos of them there are. Then if you want mods there's even more. It makes me happy that new people are still discovering the games

Started with Civ V and I had the same experience. Probably one of the most addictive games ever. I was always intimidated by it but it's friendlier than it seems.

Got into Civ VI equally as hard. And it can be so rewarding just on a visual level to see all your cities up and running like a well oiled machine. The series is my GOTF easy.

Always. The game is so strong it actually makes me forget to take my ADD meds every few hours.

At some point I will be, like, "oh shit, why do I suddenly feel so unfocused? Nevermind, it's just the hyperfocus wearing off and my meds are two hours overdue."

CIV 2-3-4 was my shit, but later I migrated to Paradox strategy games and I cannot cope anymore with the meager diplomatic option in Civilization.

I'm sorry to use your thread to ask but: what does LTTP means, I've tried searching for it online and all Google could give me was Link to the Past results.

I get a bit obsessed with having the perfect start, cuz turns early on are so crucial. But yeah... probably lost weeks/months of my life to this franchise since Civ2.

Yep civ vi fucks me uuppppp. Just one turn can make so much difference to the decisions you make. Only played vi for any reasonable length of time tho.

Avoid if you have responsibilities like a job or remembering to eat

Yeah I'm like that as well. Starts alone have eaten up countless hours by now because Civ 6 loads pretty slow on consoles.

Today I had a really good one, though: plains hills, spices, next to a river, coastal. Might be the single best tile I ever started on.

There is a reason why I don't have this game anywhere close to my hard drive anymore. The perfect progression of action and rewards, always with forward movement. So fucking addicting.

Space 4x games might be better, but Civ has the One feature that hooks you the most as well - it is familiar. Familiar factions, techs, buildings... the barrier of entry is so damn low.

It's the perfect storm of board game and vidya. The amazing tunes always help lull you into that hurts so good loop.

Easily my most played franchise. Started with Civ 1 on Amiga, Civ 2 on PS1, Civ 3 & 4 on PC, Civ Rev on PS3, Civ 5 on PC, Civ Rev 2+ on Vita and currently Civ 6 on PS4. I must have put in many thousands of hours over nearly 30 years. The only thing near it would be SiGames Championship Manager / Football Manager.
Currently I'm only playing 2 sessions a week. Online with my brother, usually 10pm to 2am-ish. Good times. 🙂
