So I just wrapped up my third playthrough of RE4, and I wanted to write a thoughtful essay on how it's a perfect video game, a letter written to the future that we've been trying to decipher for 15 years and barely chipping away at what made it so good.
But that takes effort so instead I'll focus on something else: what the fuck is wrong with the villains in this game?
As you may be aware, RE4 is the story of Leon being a bad enough dude to save the President's daughter. She's been infected by an ancient parasite that will control her every action, and is intended to act like a sleeper agent to destabilize the country.
And once you free her from captivity, the enemies of the game then proceed to nearly kill her along with Leon at every opportunity. Flaming trucks, grenades, boulders launched out of catapults, spiked ceilings, a giant tank with a rotating blade that bursts through a castle wall; these dumb bastards keep nearly killing their meal ticket to domination of the USA when all they had to do was infect her and drop her off on the side of the road so she could go home and wreck everything.
In summary RE4 is a good game because Osmund Saddler makes Skeletor look dignified.
