Used to pc game on a 144hz G-Sync monitor a few years back, but due to a few circumstances that monitor went to my brother and my pc has been plugged in my 4k samsung tv for a few years. Ended up getting a LG CX during the current sale, and while amoled is great, what been the biggest 'game changer' was returning to the world of over 100 fps again which my 2080 can do at 1440p (due to no hdmi 2.1 on this card) pretty well for a bunch of games I'm poking at these days from arkham knight to gta 5 to jrpgs like Cold Steel 3 or Vesperia and Ys 4 to platformers like the newer yokalee and Bloodstained. The gains aren't as noticeable from like 30 to 60fps, but camera movement is super apparent. Also scrolling down lists in your inventory in an rpg. Scrolling backgrounds in a 2d platformer looks great too.

I do hope that we see a bunch of titles support higher refresh rate on consoles in one way or another besides shooters (I believe dirt will do 120 on next gen?) especially indie titles.

What a time though, 120hz phones, folding phones, tablets, pc monitors, tvs. Now to figure out how to get a 3080 for that 4k/120 support with hdmi 2.1.

Ive switched from 60hz to 144hz this past month, I feel like the guys stuck in the cave in Plato's cave allegory who finally went outside.

60hz feels stuttery and laggy now I've cursed myself.

I bought a CX too, 55".

Best purchase ever TV wise, the quality of the OLED screen is awesome, 0 burn-in so far.

But yes I choose this model because I wanted OLED but I also wanted an OLED for gaming : And the combination of 120Hz and Freesync which are a must for the PS5 I plan to buy, made it a no-brainer for me.

I have a C9 and read that the VRR/120 has to be enabled through an update. Hope that happens.

Yep i expect by next year much more mainstream TV's, Monitors include HDMI 2.1 and 120hz+ displays. Less exclusive to expensive top tier TV's

More people will get to experience 60fps+ goodness

I am so close to taking the plunge on this exact model and size, the fact I can get Xbox Series X for £29 a month makes it even more tempting!

Picking up one today (CX)!! I'm updating from a TCL p605 (2019) and looking forward to playing on an OLED finally. If I run HDMI from my 2080, what is the highest resolution GSYNC will work with? 1440 and then 4K with a 3080? If so, do I force 1440p through the Nvidia control panel or change the resolution per game in the settings.

With a 2080, you can run GSYNC at 1440p up to 120hz, or at 4k up to 60hz over HDMI.

Once HDMI 2.1 is out you'd be able to do 4k up to 120hz on the new series of cards.

Awesome thanks! I've read that people recommend running 1440 P and letting the TV upscale? Can anyone speak to image quality? I'd prefer higher frames until I can get my hands on a 3080, but not if it looks bad upscaled from 1440 to 4K.

Bought a 55" CX this summer, so obviously I agree, but I've also been gaming on 144hz monitors for a few years now anyway.

Sometimes I'd be playing a PC game at 120-144FPS and then a console-only friend would hit me up to play something with them. Going from 120FPS to 30 is horrible, and literally bugged my eyes out. I have 20-20 vision - but I need to blink excessively and constantly readjust how I view the screen for upwards of an hour.

This happened a lot this past year when I'd go from playing Destiny 2 on PC to Destiny 2 on Xbox One.

Personally, I don't ever want to see a 30FPS game on a Series X or PS5.

Picked up the 48 CX a couple of weeks ago. Such a good TV and the difference in quality going from my old 32 LG from seven years ago to this is massive. So pleased with it.

false. VRR window is 40-120hz.
Isn't this only the case for the CX with it's 2.1 ports? I thought the C9 couldn't because 2.1 features had to be patched in.

Would love to be wrong lol.

Misinformation from Digital Foundry I believe (they assumed based on FreeSync). A LG spokesperson said that HDMI 2.1 is what will enable VRR all the way up to 120hz for the C9.

Ah that's fucking awesome.

returning to the world of over 100 fps again which my 2080 can do at 1440p (due to no hdmi 2.1 on this card)

HUD and menu screens @ 120 Hz can be done with ease on next-gen consoles, same as 4k@60 menus were used this gen by some games such as HZD.

Speaking of HZD, I just realized a few days ago that I could do 120Hz @ 144p as well and was watching someone play it with G-sync last night. We noticed the extra smoothness from the game running between 55-90 instead of 55-60. So even at sub-100Hz, the gains are apparent. Until today, I had not gamed on 120/144Hz because TVs top at 60Hz. But the C9/CX series can do 120Hz so couch PC gamers like myself are now going to feel the pressure to spend unholy amounts on their CPU/RAM and their cooling to keep up with above 60 FPS gaming.

Even using precision boost overclock, my 3700x can't handle 120Hz, for example, so I hope the 4800x beats or matches the Intel 10900K.

Why do we need a HDMI 2.1 120Hz screen for PS5? I mean sure it is technically going to support it but realistically only not so graphically intensive titles are going to run at 4K and 120 Hz at the same time anyways?

Pretty sure I saw Call of Duty was confirmed as 4k @120hz the other day.

Honestly, especially with sample and hold displays, 120hz is more important than ray tracing. In an ideal world, they'd give console users a couple presets and they could choose which they'd prefer to prioritize.

With VRR you can turn off vsync and get every little bit of performance out if your game.

So a 4k game that would have been 60 with drops before might vary between 57 - 85 and will feel smooth all the time.

Is CX good enough for 3080? I thought it had 40Gbps bandwidth vs the standard 48 for HDMI 2.1?

Plan to get a few more good years on my LG 55B6 to whatever is new in 2023/2024.

Looking forward to all the latest OLED-tech by then... but yeah, high refresh rates are amazing.

Now try out BFI in the less-demanding games which run at a constant 120 FPS, and be prepared for even more improvement to motion smoothness and clarity.

Isn't this only the case for the CX with it's 2.1 ports? I thought the C9 couldn't because 2.1 features had to be patched in.

C9 supports 1440p at 40–120Hz and 2160p at 40–60Hz via HDMI 2.0.
HDMI 2.1 will enable 2160p at 40–120Hz in 12-bit HDR.

CX supports 1440p at 40–120Hz and 2160p at 40–120Hz using 4:2:0 subsampling via HDMI 2.0.
HDMI 2.1 will enable 2160p at 40–120Hz in 10-bit HDR.

Why do we need a HDMI 2.1 120Hz screen for PS5? I mean sure it is technically going to support it but realistically only not so graphically intensive titles are going to run at 4K and 120 Hz at the same time anyways?
The minimum refresh rate for televisions with Variable Refresh Rate support is typically 40Hz or 48Hz.
Low Framerate Compensation requires a VRR range of at least 2.5× to work.
  • With a 60Hz display, that means your range is going to be 40–60 Hz at most (1.5×) which limits VRR to only 40–60 FPS.
  • With a 120Hz display, that means your range might be 48–120 Hz (2.5×). This means LFC can be used, so VRR is active across the entire 0–120 FPS range.

1440p scales pretty well on the OLED's and I have prefered to play at 1440p 120hz rather than 4k 60hz if performance has allowed.

As far as I am aware it will not allow 12bit color on the CX but 10bit should be fine.

Ironically I have 4k TVs all through my home except my media room. They are cheper TCLs but they have been surprisingly great sets.

I finally bought a 4k LG LED a few days ago with 2x 2.1, 120hz, and all the other bells and whistles for next gen. I need an 86" TV for my space so oled was cost prohibitive (just because you can doesn't mean you should!). I'm glad it has all my other gaming requirements though and cannot wait for it to arrive in early October.

How is the 30 fps experience on it though? I've heard that it's not ideal, due to the fastest response time of OLED.

I've been using a 120Hz monitor for a good few years now and don't really mind playing games in lower framerates than that, on PC or any other device. It's cool that some devs want to provide this experience on consoles now, but people expecting that to become the norm or something are just setting themselves up for disappointment, time and again some of the best games out there are capped at 30FPS and that has zero impact on their popularity.

it does have stutter on low refresh rates. i haven't seen it with my own eyes but must be fine....the praise these TVs get and i'm sure people are enjoying their movies just fine which are shot at 24fps.

I think that was only a rumor. Do you have a source? Can't find anything.

I guess it was too good to be true.

VentureBeat: Call Of Duty: Black Ops Cold War will play at 4K and refresh rates of 120fps on the next generation News

Seems like the game will also use the haptic feedback on the DualSense. https://venturebeat.com/2020/08/26/call-of-duty-black-ops-cold-war-arrives-with-cross-generation-cross-platform-play-on-november-13/

Just remember seeing that thread. Doesn't seem remotely likely that it'll be 4k and 120hz, though.

I went from a 55" TCL 605 to a 65"LG C9 and its amazing. The pixel perfect precision of OLED can't be beat. If you can afford it, get it calibrated to squeeze the most out of it.

I'd rather have a faster scan out than one based at 60hz.

With strobing it would be a superior image even even if fps stayed the same.

This is exactly why I don't have a single screen over 60hz because I feel once I got one I would want all of them that way and my 77 OLED is too expensive to replace.

Ok, the TV is amazing and I've dialed in almost everything. The only issue I'm having is that I cannot enable dynamic contrast. I have HDMI Ultra Deep Color and Instant Game response enabled and have named the input PC and used the PC icon. Running on a 2080 RTX. I was able to change the dynamic contrast for my Xbox one X and my PS4 pro, so I'm not sure why it can't be enabled on my PC input (1440p, 120hz). I have HDR enabled in windows 10.

Not the end of the world as it looks amazing but I'd like to know if it's currently possible to enable it.

I have a C9 OLED which I love. But the TCL 6 series TV I have for my bedroom is the one that kind of surprised me most in terms of quality for dollar. I knew it was a solid TV, but I didn't expect it to be on the calibre of my KS8000. Is the latest model 120hz VRR? I know it supports VRR. But if it has 2.1 and the bandwidth that would be an amazing value:performance point for many PC gamers.

Looks like no to the hdmi 2.1. Sad. How punchy that TV is in terms of color gammut and brightness is incredible. Not sure how the latest models are.

The TCL 605 had HDMI 2.0b and will be limited for next gen, so no VRR or 120Hz. Your C9 however has full bandwidth HDMI 2.1 (48gbps).
