I want state-run monopolies on alcohol sales as state-run monopolies dramatically reduce alcohol consumption by making it less convenient. These state-run monopolies could also track alcohol purchases to try to limit how much alcohol someone can buy in a month.

Excise taxes also reduces alcohol consumption a good bit so those could be a good bit higher.

I think banning parking next to bars would help create more valuable space for cities and would make drunk driving less common.

And we have to talk about raising the drinking age from 21 to 25 and increasing fines on selling to minors to reduce on campus drinking which leads to brain damage, assault, and rape.

New laws have been introduced regarding frequent sobriety checks for those with alcohol related offenses, we will see their effectiveness soon, definitely could support.

Alcohol is an extremely bad drug and there are a lot of things the US could be doing to reduce alcohol consumption.

Legal drinking age should be lowered tbh. If 18 is old enough to die in a war you might as well be able to have a drink.

Alcohol should be made way easier to get. Make the minimum age 16, don't punish parents that give kids wine at the table, let supermarkets sell booze, eliminate liquor store requirements, etc.

Whatever age you are able to enlist to go die for your country overseas should be the age at which you are allowed to have a drink. I'd also argue that if society deems you age-appropriate to elect the leader of your country, you should also be considered responsible enough to buy a drink.

I mean, we tried this with prohibition and it led to a massive boom in organized crime and held 0 benefits.

I just don't think people are going to want to stop drinking booze anytime soon. Health effects just clearly do not matter to most

Alcohol is bad for you but it's a personal decision. People should drink responsibly and legally.

State Alcohol boards are ineffective and a regressive tax. It also creates crime and imbalance between neighboring states and encourages other drug use in some cases.

alcohol abuse and death is related very directly to education and economics and you can look at international figures and see causal relationships.

the USA in particular has achronic issue with teen binge drinking that may counterintuitively be related to draconian alcohol laws and a lack of education.

your parking suggestion is unworkable for a thousand reasons but on principle more needs to be done to combat DUI. Uber and other services have had an impact here abd may point to better solutions.

more education is needed on alcohol dangers.

Actually second thought. On those Alcohol Beverage Control stores, I might be for them because I know a guy who uses them to get high end $600 a bottle bottles of whisky for a bit over $100 each at the ABC stores. Having my purchasing times restricted likely sucks, but I want a taste of the good stuff damnit!

The more I think about the OP's holier than thou, knee jerky attitude the more fucking ridiculous it is.

there's also a reason why we don't have doctors in charge of everything. if they banned everything that was "unhealthy" guess what you've got a dictatorship and/or fascism

America's ridiculous age limit is the reason for so many bad/embarrassing/deadly college drinking accidents.

If anything it should be lower.

I like some of the ideas in the box article but most of what the OP is pushing are not solutions in any way. Rasing the age isn't going to stop college kids from drinking.

There has to be a cultural shift in America.

We have state run monopoly on most of alcohol and just relaxed our alcohol laws here in Finland (grocery stores can sell stronger alcohol than before and bars can be open for longer) and it had pretty much zero impact on alcohol consumption despite ''experts'' warning against it.

Lower the age to 18 to discourage binge drinking, heavily heavily heavily increase the penalties for DUIs

Lower beer/wine to age of 16 and hard liquor to 18. This allows alcohol to be introduced to teens when they're still living at home and it can encourage safer drinking habits. Compared to now where teens get to college, they're free from supervision and they binge drink themselves to death.

Oh man I just twigged, OP has the kinda hangover that lasts like 3 days, he lost his keys and phone last night and shat himself. I feel you man, we've all been there. You'll be drinking again by the weekend, it'll pass.

I agree with the premise that alcohol is one of the most dangerous drugs...but history has proven that basically all forms of prohibition don't work.

If anything, lowering the age and teaching healthy consumption is best. Also, all other drugs should also be legal and we should teach people about them in the same way.

I do think the number of people who consistently drive to bars in the suburbs is insane, as is the development of suburban strip malls and an emphasis on cars, but I am extremely fortunate to live in a city and can walk to some seriously awesome craft beer places.

A lot of it is also a cultural thing in the United States. I'm a craft beer fan and I often take my daughter with me to family friendly breweries here in Seattle. I believe in responsibility and moderation and setting a good example for her.

No more laws or infringement on peoples personal freedoms.

All I wanna do is smoke some weed, shoot my machine gun in my yard, take my girlfriend for an abortion, smoke my cherry flavor jool, eat some mushrooms, attend a few gay weddings, do a bump of coke and eat terrible food and wash it down with liquor all while screaming 'Murica!!!!'

As long as I dont rape, steal or kill and I get up everyday, raise and love my kid, go to work, pay my bills, taxes, and medical insurance.....leave me alone.

Lemme enjoy this tiny sliver of life with as little rules as possible.

I mean most of my alcohol consumption comes from the 2 for 1 margarita specials at one of the local Mexican restaurants...

So, if I understand this right, you want to eliminate all the parking at the restaurant and make me walk or Uber 6 miles every time I just want to get some enchiladas because the Mexican restaurant has a bar?

US is already stricter than most of the world. Unfortunately our stupid legal system relies on justice porn/revenge/punishment than actual rehabilitation

Getting a DUI literally fucks you up for decades, and rural counties farm it as a source of income. You can't get a job because of it. Might as well be a felon

It's ridiculous that parents can't teach their children legally.

To be perfectly honest though, this has been more or less how I've lived my entire adult life (in principle, not specifically your list of activities).

It's never ever bothered me that a drug was illegal unless it was in my car during a ride check or something.

We should also never forget that alcohol is awesome and amazing and kids should be taught how to drink and get responsibly drunk by their families.

Right, the real problem in America isn't the access of alcohol per se but it does play really terribly with the idea that we're all supposed to own cars and drive ourselves everywhere rather than having real decent public infrastructure
