Fuck off
Been thinking about annoying online gaming situations, besides the obvious stuff like folk shouting abuse or loud music via headsets and the like, well here is a classic which has probably happened to most of us at one time or another.

You're playing someone 1 v 1 and it's clear they are losing, so instead of losing fairly or rage quitting. they pause the game or find ways to waste as much time as possible and engage in a tedious battle of patience, so they can wait for you to quit so they can win in a shitty way, by making you quit so they win via forfeit/default. Sometimes it last minutes other times hours, or days.

What's the longest time someone did this to you?

What games allow this? In most games I've played online, if you pause it, it doesn't stop the game

Won once in Tekken 7 against a player that always tried to win by doing the same cheap moves over and over again. Needless to say I didn't rematch. Right after that he tried to befriend me on Steam. He had a Spongebob avatar. Takes no genius to see what he would've have done if I accepted so I blocked him.

In Mortal Kombat games on PC, soempalyers have found a way to cheat by disabling all special moves. They lose first round on pyurpose, then in next rounds special moves are disabled. This is associated to a character able to spam the grapplin move(one of the robots)&

it used to be a problem in some sports games a few years back, but they must have patched it out in recent iterations.
If you were losing in NFL 2K or Madden (I think), you could jump offsides on every play as way of trolling people. The referees call a penalty and reset the playclock, making your opponent wait through another countdown. It just extends the game in an excruciating way, and means that your opponent will never get to run any interesting plays.

Not that I ever did anything like that!

I love trolling invaders in Souls games. I feel like they deserve it for invading me and wasting my time. Even had a dude try to add me on Steam yesterday because he was so upset at getting ganked.

In Worms 2 Armageddon you can stall the game by waiting to use your move until the timer is just about to end on your turn. This speeds up sudden death, so if you've been setting up the whole game in anticipation of the rising water, it puts you at a significan't advantage. I feel like that's fair game.

But then there are situations like this, which I feel definitely ought to be prevented.

When I was an avid Overwatch player on the ps4, my team was losing I was defense (Torbjorn). The Genji and soldier start fighting with the rest of the team. They start making racial insults about my accent. They start talking about a wall. I swap to Mei and start blocking their path with ice walls.

This brings back memories of Warcraft 3 / Starcraft where people would try to hide buildings in remote areas of a map and drag the games out as long as possible once they realized they were going to lose.

MK11 recently had a bug where if you hovered over "forfeit" in between BO3 Kombat League matches the game would just stall there forever until someone quit. Didn't run into that myself, but apparently some people were willing to idle on that screen for hours to get a single win.

For me , the worst is when in Rocket League i get paired with shit players that obviously got somehow carried to diamond. They do nothing while i carry the team and if (after performing ten or so crucial saves) i miss ONE ball: i guarantee one of the two is gonna start typing "m8....WTF?" and spamming the "What a SAVE!!!" quick-chat. Nothing gets my blood boiling like that shit.

What makes me rage is the fact that even if you are oblivious to the game itself and who did work to win, you have also the player score for that specific game right in front of you...so i just sit there, with my 800 or 1k points getting shit-talked by them and their mighty 40 points. -_-

On the upside, i have to admit that 2 or 3 times i actually encountered players that thanked me for carrying or that said they were sorry for not playing a good performance...but that was literally 2 or 3 games out of the thousands i had, but in those moments i literally loved those dudes.

See this in Hearthstone sometimes, where the soon to be losing player, stalls their turn until the very last second of the timer every single round hoping for you to just be impatient and quit.

Haven't seen bad behaviour in a very long time, gameplay wise. Perhaps I've just been lucky.

I have not witnessed trolling in games beside Blizzard games. It's like they facilitate trolling with their game design. Both Overwatch and hearthstone enable plenty ways to troll and waste people's time.

It's very impressive that even with long dps queue times now, there are still people trolling. You're wasting your own damn time more than anybody's else. Or maybe they really want to play soldieor or torb into orisa/sigma, hard to say.

I love trolling. It's hilarious, I would team kill, block door ways, use all the consumables, alert everyone to our presence, split up the team etc.

It's a game so I don't take it seriously but when others do...oh boy I live to push those buttons.

During my Xbox 360 days I would just do my best Cookie Monster impression on the microphone whilst playing Street Fighter 2 HD online. Good times. I had fun with it.

No moves are cheap. Adapt and block and punish accordingly lmao.

Unless a move is broken or it was laggy then you can't really complain imo.

In my book all moves that have only one viable way of countering them are cheap. And Tekken has a lot of those. Luckily I already knew what to do in that particualr case.

Weird thread, OP. I've never had this happen to me but only because I can't remember the last game that allowed you to pause a multiplayer match indefinitely. Even the older iterations of FIFA only gave you 90 something seconds before it would automatically unpause the game for you.

In Splatoon 2 Salmon Run. If a round ends at low tide and the next round changes to mid or high tide, there's a map where if you rush to a certain platform after you spawn for the round you can end up situated there and surrounded by water on all sides. Going into water on Splatoon causes the character to die (and in Salmon Run, you'd have to be revived by a team member). This isn't as common anymore but when the game first came out, people would jump to that platform and just hang out there and "squid party." Some people will go there to that platform and stay there. If they try to come back to where the team is, they'll have to get in the water first, and then hope to be revived on dry land by one of their three other teammates. Salmon Run is a hoard mode and it's not easy to complete with even one member out of commission because they're goofing around.

I generally don't mind when people do this in Turf War. Squid partying is fine. In ranked it sucks but I don't play ranked often and I haven't seen this happen often. But in Salmon Run it bothers me a lot. The method I described above doesn't happen too often these days, but there is occasionally that one teammate who keeps jumping into the water.

In Turf, I have seen someone who was being beat really badly by another person finally matchmake to be on that person's team and then throw the match.

That's not how fighting games work. But I can understand why it upsets you. I was always upset with all of the Ken/Ryu players doing the same moves in Street Fighter 4, lol.

@topic: I find it kinda pathetic when people use ALL the time EVERY TURN in CCGs just to annoy you. Especially when they already lost. Eternal handles this brilliantly though with giving you shorter counters the more you waste time.

Test Drive Unlimited 2 was my first exposure to online trolling and I swear it soured me on the whole thing.

Shit was obnoxious. People who would put the mic besides their speakers so you would only listen the engine of their car, guys that would start screaming on mic, people driving backwards and then there were the rammers, who would get the fastest car possible and use it just to ram into other players and disrupt the game.

Worst thing is, the online sessions took 8 players at a time, and those 8 players would receive the.mic sound. Also, there was collision detection between the 8 players both in race and the open world, so you couldn't even cruise properly.

I haven't used in game voice chat since then, besides the Switch online app and Discord

When I played Pokemon TCG Online this would happen fairly often. Get down to the last prize draws and they'd start letting their timer run out on each action. I think they changed it to have stricter timers but they used to be able to really stretch it out. I guess you have to expect this kind of thing when games have ladder rewards, when I was really into that game I used to wish they had a separate queue without rewards so you wouldn't have to deal with any of the bullshit, could just play people who wanted to enjoy a match.

I used to play Tekken Revolution (the F2P PS3 game) using a strategy I called "smart man, stupid man." If it was a close game, I would win the first round doing my best. Then, in the second round, I would play like an absolute idiot. Spamming highly punishable moves, constantly dashing into the opponent, never blocking, etc. I did this to reset the opponent's prediction of my gameplan, get into their heads a little bit, and set up further rounds where I could go back to my good gameplan to try to get a win. I don't know if this qualifies as trolling, but it got me a ton of hatemail (especially when the "stupid man" would actually win).

I remember in an old FIFA game (FIFA 11 or 12) there was a way to freeze the game during a loading in online play. Leaving the game resulting in an abandon. Fun times.

Online toxicity doesnt phase me, I grew up playing online multiplayer games. Only thing that DOES ever bother me is when the enemy is lagging and they start shit talking.

I remember something like this happening at an early CPL eSports event in Dallas. They were playing Quake 3 or Unreal Tournament, and the massive underdog got out to a 2-0 lead right at the start of the match. After getting fragged to 2-1 he realized that the servers were incorrectly configured, allowing him to refuse to respawn and just wait out the match to a 2-1 victory.

The admins forced a rematch but he raged out and refused to play. Had to be escorted from the venue. The salt was PALPABLE from all parties concerned.

I was highly amused by this.

I don't get what you mean by "wasting your time". If you play human/embered you are asking to be invaded, it's as simple as that.

I remember doing a dark souls battle i was whopping the other person's ass until they decided to dodge all of my attacks and wait for the countdown instead. That's the most unsportsmanlike conduct I faced. Not to say the dark souls community was made for proper sportsmanship but that person ruined it for me where I never wanted to use the official duel/arena battle method and always opted for the unofficial ones.
