Yeah I think we're all confused as the responses are each treating the question a little differently. OP can you clarify?
Thread title implies "new version of the same song" as in the artist later rerecording but it also seems like you meant to say covers?

A wiser older woman singing a song she wrote as a younger one.
Nicks wrote this song as a young woman, but it deals with aging and turbulent changes in growing older. Between 1975 and 1997 she dealt with a whole landslide of troubles with the band and with her love life. That baggage gives the song more weight and her voice really blossomed with extra mileage.
Joe Cocker was famous for taking other people's songs and doing them better than they did, for example:

Anyway, I always strongly preferred This Mortal Coil's version of "Song to the Siren" to the original. No insult to Buckley, but he can't compete with Liz Fraser's voice. For that matter, I like their version of "Kangaroo" more too.

Men at Work frontman Colin Hay had a minor resurgence in the early 2000s due to his music being used on Scrubs (apparently Zach Braff was a fan of his solo work). This acoustic rendition of one of his old hits was used to great effect in the season 2 premiere in which he even made a cameo. I prefer this version due to my association of it with Scrubs.

Haha, everybody always fights me on this one. I like how much more emotional the vocals are in the Gwen Stefani version of It's My Life. The original just has more rote and robotic singing.
The lazy, dreamy psychadelic version of Dear Prudence is always a favorite.
I personally can't stand the Nirvana version, but I'll absolutely concede that the Midge Ure version is definitely better than Bowie's.
