Figured this would be pertinent information to share.

CNN said:
Kimberly-Clark is recalling regular absorbency U by Kotex Sleek tampons in the United States and Canada after reports of the tampons unraveling or coming apart upon removal. In some cases, users sought "medical attention to remove tampon pieces left in the body," the recall announcement said. There have also been a small number of reports of infections, irritation, injury and other problems. People should seek medical attention if they experience symptoms such as vaginal injury, irritation, urogenital infections, abdominal pain, nausea or vomiting.

You can check the lot number on the packaging here.

Good on you for posting this. I hate tampons, but we got a lot of women on this site and I'm sure many of them use them.

Obviously being biologically male means I'll never know what any of this stuff actually feels like, and thus I have limited room to comment therein, but stories like these are why I'm kinda confident that tampons would terrify me.

This is definitely something I worry about when I use tampons. Bits of them getting stuck in there or the string breaking would be nightmarish!

When I did my OB/Gyn rotation we had a couple of women in who forgot to remove their tampons and thought they caught an infection. They didn't but a week old tampon soaked with period blood and other discharge smells funky, to put it mildly.

I've tried various cups but they always feel uncomfortable so I stick to my obs.

I've heard a lot of stories like these and still don't understand how you can simply forget it in there. Blows my mind every time

I guess this is as good a thread to ask as any... What's up with those weird plastic things around each tampon in areas like the US? Seems incredibly wasteful to me

Not a woman, but I believe it's to make insertion easier/more comfortable.

If you are cup-curious you can get free-except-for-shipping set from Rebel Kate. That's what convinced me to give them a try. It was difficult and awkward the first couple of times, but I wouldn't go back to anything else now.
Thank you a bunch. Going to give them a shot. My mom was always against me using tampons, but I workout a lot and play sports and they just seemed easier than pads in that regard. The cup sounds like a far better option.

Not really. When tampons got introduced in the US many people were uncomfortable with having to insert a finger into the vagina or touching in general. It was the puritanical line of thinking that you weren't supposed to touch yourself "down there".
Sure makes it easier and more comfortable to me. And you don't get your hands so dirty.

The few times I've tried it without the applicator it hurt and didn't go up high enough.

Is it really that nice to use? I was thinking about switching over myself.
Once you have the insertion technique down, it is way better than tampons.

I still wear pads with it incase it overflows (rare, but possible), but it's less obviously 'there' compared to a tampon. No irritation, easy to clean and you don't have to worry about a string poking out. Plus... uh... (might be TMI for non-period having readers), since the cup seals there's less of that blood smell too because bacteria has a harder time penetrating the cup.

I sometimes forget I have a cup in because it's that comfortable in comparison but luckily it's not as big of a risk of poisoning you. :P

Oh that's great. Also less of a smell is <3 But yeah pads as a backup on particularly heavy days seems a good idea. Don't want to be the one with the big red spot on the back of her pants. :P

I use period panties as a backup for my 3 heavy flow days instead of pads. Just feels nicer/less bulk.

I'm gonna have to look into this cup thing, seems interesting. I use tampons and pads because I have ridiculously heavy periods and the pads alone just weren't cutting it. I really just want everything removed because I absolutely don't want kids and am suffering for a week every month for no reason, but of course my doctor refuses. If the cups can ease that horrible discomfort even a little that would be great :D

I'm a guy so I don't have much to add, but my SO has been using the cup for a couple years and she loves it. I think it's the Diva brand. Like others here, she uses a backup pad on her heavy days.

After getting my copper IUD, my heavy days got way, way heavy. I was soaking through Ultra tampons in an hour or two. The large-size cup, which is supposed to be for 8-12 hour use, gets me about 4 hours on my heaviest days. It's the best solution I have!

After I switched to a cup I never went back as I find them really comfortable and convenient. Tampons were always kind of a necessary evil, so I was happy to jump ship when I had an alternative. Hope there aren't many people endangered by this, TSS is scary.

jfc I just saw this and had a few of these exact ones in my bag.

I remember we talked about the diva cup at the old place and I meant to try one but somehow completely put it out of my mind. Gonna see if I can pick one up at CVS. Anything I should know going in? (no pun intended)
