Kotaku publishes article criticizing their own terrible ads, Kotaku owners later remove it without consent of the staff.

Agreed. Jason and a lot of the staff are great, but god that site is awful.

What's the union gonna do about it? if it's not discussed in the CBA it could be tough to do anything about it.
Leaving fucking Kotaku already that site has been garbo for soooooooooo long save for the scoops.
This is an (in my view very bad) editorial stance, but clearly their staff have not had their free speech curtailed.
We have heard about this story because one of their staff exercised their right to free speech, and posted tweets publicly discussing it from his perspective.

They have a great team over there, who im sad to say should just jump ship from their awful owners and do their own thing. Id support a site devoted to the kind of investigative journalism they do so well

Ah yes. Deadspin, the notoriously straightforward sticking to sports site since its inception. Not like criticizing media was a huge part of WHY THEY EXISTED IN THE FIRST PLACE
Especially given how they closed splinter recently with zero warning to staff and they didn't even get a Farewell post, new content just stopped and just about everyone was laid off

Its deeper than that. The owners pulling the articles from all their websites is censoring the staff and ALL OF US as consumers. The article was promoting and encouraging the use of free speech to opine on what we the consumers would like to see. By pulling these articles they are censoring us the readers of Video Game Journalism.

Best case scenario would be selling GMG to the union members. Run it like a co-op. They probably don't have the funds for it though... 😕

Kotaku isn't just Jason. It has some of the best staff in games media. Hell, Cecelia is the one who spearheaded the Riot games expose.

No one's free speech is being violated. All of these groups are private entities. When the US government steps in to charge and imprison Kotaku editors for what they have written, then their free speech will have been infringed.
That said, this is a dick move by Kotaku's ownership.
All the writers, editors and other producers of content need to bail. Gizmodo Media Group is awful and needs to burn.
I stopped reading kotaku - not because of any needy gamer shit but because they'd post links or collections of Japanese tweets and call that an article - but the parent company is being a real nightmare. I really like deadspin's coverage of the nba and our very garbage-y world.
Great Hill Partners is garbage. Here's to the staff across their brands finding bigger and better gigs.
Sent the email. Would love it if the Kotaku team collectively jumped ship and started their own company, but that's an expensive endeavor so I don't expect that. Maybe get some of the AV Club team and Deadspin in there too. Keep it focused on media, and do the same thing for politics with The Root, Splinter, and whatever else has proactive leftist politics.

Kotaku has always proudly and publically talked about the wall between editorial and business decisions. Yeah. Not so much anymore. This is going to have longterm consequences.
