Do we even know why Konami shifted like they did? I have to imagine it was a change of management. It doesn't seem like its just Pachinko and the like make a ton of money. Early 2000s(and pre then) Konami genuinely gave a shit about what they made and their IPs.

Konami was a huge player in pushing gambling in Japan, and if you move your games into gambling machines, the costs are cheaper and the returns are much better.

This switch and firm emphasis on looking to merely extract money from people later plagued their traditional development teams. We've seen what they've done with MGSV, but they have a very "no more traditional games" stance on mobile, as this was the final straw that forced Koji Igarashi to leave, as they cancelled one of his games, and I shit you not, because it didn't have enough microtransactions.

Konami's a gambling company today, not a game company.

Exactly, gambling in Japan now is more profitable than making games, I bet their pachinko machines makes them tons of money. Also I bet that the higher ups now of this and where pushing for this shift in the company.

Why don't they just do compilations or outsource a remaster or two. At least that should be fairly easy money.

Ya'll can circlejerk about Konami but I'm excited as fuck for all the new Bemani games this year.

And North American residents will get... *checks notes* ...looks like "jack", "shit", and "not even a mobile port that works on approximately three Android devices."

Sounds fantastic, can't wait.

Could it really be that hard to pay people to at LEAST remaster the Metal Gear and (handheld)Castlevania games for current consoles.

Even if was the lazy job that was Castlevania Requiem I'd take it for those games over nothing at all.

It's free fucking money.

Yikes Konami..
Best thing you've done since Kojima left.. is to allow MGS 4 as a PlayStation Plus game next month tbh.
When I replay it.. the weight of the realization, that we will never get a Kojima MGS again will sink in yet again.

Sound Voltex PC isnt officially available in the west but you can still legally get it. Changing your region to play games on mobile that arent available for you isnt hard either.

They're not. They make much more money with gaming than pachinko, which is a declining market (seen like a thing for old men nowadays).

Thing is, their games are mostly for mobile devices and focusing on japanese audiences. They also develop arcade games and even their few console releases do well enough, like the PowaPro series. I don't see what's wrong about it, they're a company that focusess on their domestic market and it pays off for them, with fans enjoying their products and their business doing well.

No, they aren't. Konami as the division you people know of never made any Pachinko and they aren't a pachinko company. Since the beginning Konami was part of many industries and video game was one of them. There's many divisions of Konami with Konami Holdings which obviously is the holding company with Konami Digital Entertainment (Console and mobile game), Konami Amusement (Arcade and Pachinko), Konami Gaming (Cassino) and Konami Sports (Fitness Clubs, sports classes and many more) as main subsidiaries.

So yes, the Konami you people know and talk about never even touched it because that's not their industry, their industry is the gaming industry which they continue to focus but since 2015, in mobile which is the thing you want to blame, not this stupid meme of Pachinko which don't have anything to do with this division and which division that it's part of is quite behind Digital Entertainment.

Here the list of their subsidiaries:
https://www.konami.com/corporate/en/subsidiaries/

Here's their latest earnings in which you can see the huge difference in revenue in yen between Digital Entertainment (105,806) and Amusement (18,179). :)

Perhaps I should have explained what I meant by gambling. I meant it going beyond Pachinko and into gacha trash and microtransaction models. In that respect Konami is much like Cygames, in that I would say they're gambling companies that use games as a model for lootbox garbage. This issue has plagued Metal Gear's more traditional games.

How can Konami NOT be cashing in on the success of Casltevania Netflix? Make a Castlevania III remake.

Is there an official explanation whatever happened to them? Why have they stopped making AAA games? They used to be great and Kojima didn't make everything so it can't be Kojima's departure that is the reason (unless he took all the good people with him when he left?)
I don't get this company. Why don't they bother with consoles at all anymore? They are sitting on Castlevania, get a good developer on it and make a brand new one similar to LoS or perhaps a 2D one? Why not make a new Silent Hill?

Take a walk around the nearest casino and count the number of Konami logos you see.

They stopped being a video game company a long time ago

Konami continues to be a video game company with it's Digital Entertainment. Since the beginning they're part of many industries with it's different divisions. Konami is a video game company, cassino company, amusement company, sports company and many others, they aren't just one because there's more than one division. The Casino division didn't began in the last years, they're there for ages.

No serious company will "sell their IPs" just because a group of people want them to. IPs are very valuable and they can use them for several things, not making console games doesn't mean they don't do anything with them. Maybe not what you want, but I'm sure Konami is making bank licensing Castlevania (Netflix, Smash -- these things also expand Konami's brand awareness) and have a mobile game for the series.

Then what are all the games in the OP and why gaming makes more money for them than anything else?

Man, they have some crazy IP. Shame they gave up on console gaming.

My theory is that they believe there is more money to be made from human despair (gambling) than human enjoyment (video games).

They could be right, for all I know. Read a book on the psychology of gambling addiction and that whole industry is fucked up.

Thankfully video game companies found many ways to include gambling into video games. Konami should be really excited right now.

I wish. They have so many great ones. I know Sony would do them justice. They do single player games the best outside of Capcom.

Sell Sony Silent Hill, it's not a major cash cow outside of gaming and isn't a huge money maker anyways. Then if Kohima still wants to do Silent Hills he can. Resident Evil and Silent Hills can be better than ever.

As long as the Kagemasa family is in charge for the company, nothing will change. Old man Hiroshi Yamauchi still has my respects to elect Satoru Iwata as the first Nintendo President not part of the Yamauchi family back then. At Konami, however, nothing will change. Many things went downhill there even when Kojima was still on board. They made it pretty clear in 2015 that they will shift their focus away from AAA-Projects. Almost 4 years later they are still keeping their promise.

Well, they're not going to announce anything special like this anyway.
After the surprise Bomberman R, I'll hold onto hope that they have something special to announce. Eventually.
